I've been covering all-things spa since the mid-1990s after a memorable first-time experience at a destination spa. People go to spas for many reasons. And while the experience can be all touch-feely, it can also be life changing, not to mention costly. Getting the most out of your experience is what really counts. Here are some tips for the spa newbie or the spa savvy.

NATIVE AMERICAN INFLUENCES

~ SHERATON WILD HORSE PASS RESORT & SPA ~

I had an all too brief experience at Aji Spa (Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa, Chandler, AZ) in 2009. This beautiful desert property is owned by the Pima and Maricopa Native American People Gila River Indian Community). Throughout the property, every architectural detail and design element, including operational protocols, are steeped in tribal culture and heritage; the Pima and Maricopa oversee every aspect of operation to assure conformity and authenticity to their culture and heritage. During my visit, I was even given a tour of the Resort by North America’s only Native American Concierge, which heightened the authenticity. I originally wrote about the property and my spa experience in my February 24, 2010 article post.

Back then, my treatment experience was the Native Herbs Cleansing Wrap (O’Otham Kuklan); it was administered to me by a Pima Native American. The treatment was especially meaningful given the authenticity of the therapist, plus the utilization of the Sacred Creosote Plant (Shegoi) throughout the treatment. At the conclusion of the treatment, my therapist also prayed over me. I also recall that after the treatment and while relaxing in one of the spa’s several relaxation areas, a staff member incensed the entire spa with a lit sage smudge bundle as part of its daily purification ritual; it is believed that burning sage blesses the space and those within it, while chasing away negative feelings and spirits.

FAST FORWARD ~ Both the Resort and Spa continue to receive major awards and accolades, including the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award for its Kai Restaurant, the only such restaurant in AZ to receive such an award of distinction. Kai has also received the Forbes Five Star Award. (Other awards have included AAA Four Diamond Award for the Resort, and Forbes Four Star Award for the Spa.)

In this edition, I’m reviewing some new “must-haves”, which includes Aji Spa’s new private label amenity products, “Indigenous” and Kai Restaurant’s “The New Native American Cuisine” cookbook.

AJI SPA INDIGENOUS PRODUCTS ~ Adding to the authenticity of the entire spa experience, Aji Spa now offers its guests their signature products, “Indigenous”. Each product continues the unique and authentic experiences based on culture and heritage of the Pima and Maricopa People. Products are used throughout the Spa and are also available in the retail area for purchase. These must-have products are formulated using locally sourced ingredients, revered by the Pima and Maricopa People for purification and healing properties. Product ingredients include creosote (a.k.a. chaparral and Shegoi), aloe vera, yucca, willow bark, desert mallow, rosemary, peppermint, and lavender, which are grown on-premise along the property’s Medicine Trail.

Products reviewed included the Natural Shower Gel With Organics, Organic Body Lotion, Natural Shampoo With Organics, Organic Silky Conditioner, and Soy Candle. Other products in the collection include a Body Scrub, Fizzing Bath Salt, Handmade Goat Milk Soap With Creosote, and Body and Room Mist. I enjoyed using the products. The aromas were fresh, green and energizing, with a slight medicinal note. The Shower Gel left my skin very hydrated; additional ingredient included wild indigo. The Body Lotion was extremely hydrating, non-greasy, left no residue, and was quickly absorbed; great for hands and cuticles; additional ingredients, calendula and shea butter. The Shampoo cleaned without stripping the hair; the consistency was watery, so care in dispensing must be used to avoid spillage or waste. The Conditioner is very dense, so very little was needed; leaves hair shiny. The Soy Candle emits a wonderful aroma, and is topped with creosote leaves and lavender, which add to the aromatics.

KAI RESTAURANT ~ Adding to the award winning dining experience is “The New Native American Cuisine ~ Five-Star Recipes from the Chefs of Arizona’s Kai Restaurant” Cookbook, (Marian Betancourt, Executive Chef Michael O’Dowd and Chef de Cuisine Jack Strong). This Cookbook, a must-have for any foodie or culinary history aficionado, exceeds being definitive of the culture and heritage of the Pima and Maricopa People with its treasure trove of authentic recipes, mainstay dishes passed down through the ages by these Peoples that utilized locally sourced ingredients, many grown on-premises. Also included is a glossary of ingredients that are traditional to Native and desert cultures, a shopping guide where to purchase traditional Native and specialty food items, a directory on educational resources for these cultures and those related to the Sonoran Desert, and a metric conversion chart. Kai Restaurant’s culinary wizards worked closely with the Gila River People and Farms to make sure they were not only using locally grown ingredients, but that the use of them preserved the honor of the culture and tradition, while pairing these culinary traditions with aspects of European culinary nuances that don’t detract or diminish the culture, heritage or traditions. The results are edible masterpieces by culinary wizards whose talents reveal unique and authentic taste experiences that clearly define the Peoples, their culture, traditions and heritage.

There is definitely a different vibe at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa and its multi-award winning Aji Spa and Kai Restaurant. There is a reverence and spiritual sense wherever you walk throughout the property because of the Pima and Maricopa People, their history, their culture and their traditions.

Minus 417 Aromatic Body Peeling and Aromatic Body Butter ~ Ocean Scent ~ All products are formulated without parabens or mineral oil. Formulations are based on a naturally occurring vitamin and mineral complex that includes Dead Sea salt, sweet almond oil, lavender oil and calcium pantothenate (also known as pantothenic acid, which aids in cell regeneration). golden earth essential oil ~ euphoria essence ~ More than a fragrance, it’s an organic essential oil that calms and brings some sense of “balance” into a person’s state of wellness. This particular essential oil is part of golden earth “Perfumes from Nature” offerings. Key ingredients include jojoba oil, rose and jasmine essential oil blend, and passion fruit oil. The rose and jasmine oils are believed to bring about a sense of wellbeing, happiness and creativity. Thymes Pinecone Reed Diffuser Set ~ Frasier Fir ~ Nothing conjures up holiday childhood memories than a seasonal aroma such as Frasier Fir. The set includes an adorable shaped Pinecone vessel. I was impressed with the high quality of the oils used in the fragrance and its authentic aroma, which filled several rooms with holiday memories, while transporting me to a grove of evergreen trees. Every time I walk past my fragrant Frasier Fir pinecone-shaped diffuser, I inhale a bit deeper to enjoy the seasonal headiness it emits. www.thymes.com

MISCELLANEOUS

Waterleaf ~ This new fine dining restaurant is located in LEED Certified hotel, Inn At Water’s Edge, on the campus of the College of DuPage (Wheaton, IL). Focus is on fresh, local, seasonal and organic. Culinary students are on the frontlines, while their chef professors conjure up culinary wizardry that exceeds all levels of expectation. Fine dining Waterleaf Restaurant is a rare find in this part of Chicago-land. I was there for lunch and there were only a few patrons in the beautifully appointed dining room. Unfortunately, service was very slow and I viewed it as a spin on the trending “slow food” movement, and my lunch service was over two hours; fortunately I didn’t have any other appointments that day. That said, however, my menu selections were delicious and well worth the wait. www.waterleafrestaurant.com

Anytime of the year can be a special occasion for gifting…whether the gifting is for family, friends, charity, or self. The beauty of this holiday time of Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year is that it’s a joyful time accentuated with gifting. …I realize it’s been awhile since publishing my last article, but with your indulgence and understanding, I have been otherwise engaged…among the various creative things I'm involved in besides writing, I’m also a professional singer; I auditioned for and became a part of the cast of Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies” at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater (two understudy roles)…between rehearsals, wig and costume fittings, and performances, I had to re-prioritize my entire schedule…the production has now been extended, and also forced me to cancel my plans for attending the International Spa Association (ISPA) Conference in Las Vegas…I was to have attended this important industry annual event in my capacity as a member of the media representing my ezine...this year’s conference would’ve marked my fourteenth…I do plan on writing an article about this year’s conference for an upcoming edition…sometimes one’s passions converge…a mixed blessing, for sure…

This article continues my “FALL POTPOURRI” article, which reviewed an extensive array of spa, beauty and wellness related products. Dynamics of technology, ingredient accessibility, socio-economic and environmental consideration, professional and consumer demand, and aspects of competitiveness in a free market system, have contributed to a dizzying array of products available to both professionals and consumers, that are based on their own set of criteria, preferences, and needs. Factoring all of these aspects into one dynamic for choice can lead to the selection process becoming daunting. Hopefully my continuing product reviews represent options for you to consider that will address some of your needs.

SKINCARE

Clarisonic Sonic Cleansing is preferred and recommended by many dermatologists and estheticians because it is more thorough in facial cleansing because it removes more pore and surface debris than conventional manual cleansing methods; over time, skin condition improves and pore size appears to diminish. I’ve been using the compact Mia Sonic Cleansing device for four weeks and have definitely noticed a more refined appearance to my overall texture. I love how clean and fresh my skin felt after using the device and found it gentle enough to use twice a day; the vibrating brush head is also gentle and non-irritating. I’ve been using the Sensitive Brush Head with my cleanser and occasionally will alternate and use the Normal Brush Head. The Mia maintains its charge for quite some time, making portability easier. Clarisonic Sonic Infusion is an extended step solely for the delicate eye area via the orbital bone.

The Clarisonic Opal is gentle enough for this delicate area, but is also recommended for the lip, eyebrow and even forehead area. The Opal infuses serum in the eye area more effectively than manual application of eye serums. The unit comes equipped with the recommended Opal Anti-Aging Sea Serum; a small-dispensed amount of the serum is applied to the vibrating head and then applied in small circular patterns to evenly distribute the serum on the orbital bone area. After use, I lightly tap into the tissue any remaining serum. The results include a more even distribution of treatment product, minimized lines, and improved overall texture; it also helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles. I was also able to apply my regular eye cream on top of the serum without any irritation. The serum is formulated with mineral rich marine extracts and botanicals and is paraben-free. The Opal also maintains its charge for some time and makes portability easier. Both products were outstanding and a must in one’s “arsenal” of skincare. http://www.clarisonic.com

Joanna Vargas Skincare ~ This in-demand skincare guru and successful owner of Joanna Vargas Salon, Skin Care Sanctuary in New York City on tony Fifth Avenue, now offers her line of green, natural and organic skincare and body care treatment products. I got a chance to try the Daily Serum, Rejuvenating Serum, and Exfoliating Mask. The Daily Serum is formulated with Argan oil, green tea, vitamins A, C, E, and F, oat grass juice, and larch tree extract (aids the immune system). The formulation helps to reduce inflammation and irritation, while protecting the skin from the assault of environmental damage (e.g. sun, pollution); the base of oils in the formulation moisturized my skin effectively. The serum was quickly absorbed and didn't leave any tacky residue. I enjoyed using the product; its fresh aroma was somewhat fruity. The product also eliminated the need to use a moisturizer, as the serum provided sufficient moisturization; this helped minimize my overall skincare regimen by eliminating an additional step and product. The Rejuvenating Serum, which I used at night, is formulated with Argan, neroli, rosehip, olive, jojoba and rosewood oils, larch tree extract and vitamin C. The formulation helps reduce inflammation, irritation and photo aging, while also detoxifying. The combination of these oils didn’t leave any oily residue on my face, and was quickly absorbed. Its aroma was also fresh and somewhat floral. The Exfoliating Mask is formulated with larch tree extract, kaolin clay, volcanic rock, vitamin C, lemon and orange extract, pineapple enzyme, kojic and lactic acid. This gentle exfoliator is more like a polish and left my exceptionally clean and smooth; my skin glowed. The aroma was fresh and somewhat fruity. http://www.joannavargas-skincare.com

Kate Somerville ~ If you’ve been following my writings since the mid-nineties, you’ll know that I generally shy away from skincare that falls under the category of “cosmeceutical”. I wanted to try this line because of the accolades from consumer devotees I kept coming across. The products I tried included the ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment, Quench Hydrating Face Serum, and Deep Tissue Repair Cream with Peptide K8. After using these products for about four weeks, I thoroughly enjoyed using the product and its effectiveness; I noticed an improvement to my skin’s overall texture, firmness, luminosity, and hydration levels. Absolutely no irritation resulted from using any of the products, which has been the primary reason why I tend to shy away from cosmeceuticals. ExfoliKate polishes the skin with microspheres while delivering a cocktail of high performance fruit enzymes that target pores and dissolve any of the “nasties”. The powerhouse ingredients include salicylic acid, papaya, pineapple and pumpkin enzymes, rosewood and cinnamon extracts, aloe vera, honey and vitamin E. After cleansing, the product is applied and left on the skin for only a half minute and then rinsed off; the skin is polished, renewed and scrupulously cleaned. The Face Serum is a fabulous product with key ingredients that includes retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, wheat germ oil, and proprietary complexes that improve elasticity, firmness, while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. The Face Serum was applied sparingly to my cleansed skin; after completely being absorbed, I then applied a small amount of the Repair Cream. I also loved the Repair Cream and found my skin’s texture smoother and luminous. The Repair Cream stellar ingredients include macadamia seed, jojoba seed, and hemp seed oils, plus silk powder; additional proprietary complexes also help to minimize hydration loss, as well as minimize fine lines and wrinkles; the skin was also firmer. Both products had a silky texture, were quickly absorbed and had no discernable aroma. While my skin type isn’t excessively dry, or laden with a lot of fine lines and wrinkles, overall, these products noticeably improved my skin’s overall condition. Divine Eyes contains organic Immortelle essential oil which also aids in collagen synthesis, organic myrtle essential oil for longevity, buckwheat wax to combat puffiness, ash tree extract to minimize dark circles and rose floral water to soothe the delicate tissue around the eye area. I fell in love with this product because it was gentle, non-irritating, moisturized well and minimized fine lines. L’Occitane Limited Edition Hibiscus Flower Shea Butter Hand Cream and Cocoa Flower Shea Butter Body Cream ~ Leave it to L’Occitane to one-up its Shea Butter line to include ramped up versions of one of its most popular ingredient and delivery system, Hand Cream and Body Cream. This time around they’re getting their inspiration from Africa with additional ingredients like Desert Rose, Hibiscus Flower and Cocoa Flower. The limited edition products also come in containers with indigenous designs that resemble vibrantly colored tribal cloth and unique patterns. I tried the Hibiscus Flower Shea Hand Cream and the Cocoa Flower Shea Body Cream. The Shea Hand Cream formula includes twenty-percent of the highly prized and super moisturizing shea butter treatment, along with the delightful fresh infusion of Hibiscus Flower. The Shea Body Cream formula includes twenty-five percent shea butter, along with the delicious fresh infusion of Cocoa Flower. Both products provide lasting moisturization without leaving any tacky residue, while naturally protecting and replenishing lost moisture to over-worked hands and tired feet. http://www.usa.loccitane.com

red flower ~ red flower infuses global cultures into everyday lives with natural and organic derived products. I tried the japan sento set, a travel set which included travel sizes of their larger full-sized version of yuzu mimosa sea algae wash, ohana ginger grass bamboo scrub, wild cherry blossom rice buff, rose camellia plum soft-water mist, kinmoxei wild lime silk oil and plum blossom silk cream. The set comes in a lovely reusable bag. Overall, I enjoyed using the products, while letting my mind wander to distant Japan, luxuriating at an Onsen, while attendants catered to my every need. All of the products were gentle, non-irritating and performed well; I also enjoyed the fresh aromas for each individual product. Usually when I try skincare or body care products, I prefer at least a three to four week supply to gauge the overall efficacy of the product being tried over a consistent period of time. Thymes Bergamot Vert ~ I have always enjoyed this brand. It offers a wide variety of products for the home including fragrance diffusers, candles, soaps, hand and body washes, lotions and creams. Within the line, there is a wide range of fragrances that are subtle. I tried two of their newer products, Bergamot Vert Hand Wash and Bergamot Vert AHA Body Lotion. The Hand Wash ingredients included lemon peel extract, honey, and glycerin. The Body Lotion ingredients included shea butter, lemon and orange fruit extract, sugar maple extract, glycerin and vitamin E. Product was quickly absorbed and didn’t leave any tacky residue. The crisp citrusy aroma of both products was fresh and invigorating. The products are also paraben-free. No matter which product or aroma I’ve tried from this brand, I’ve never been disappointed. http://www.thymes.com

emerginC Red Carpet Primer ~ This product is getting a lot of buzz because it delivers results it promises. I don’t wear much makeup, but when I do, I prefer a minimalist approach, wherever possible. As I age, I enjoy finding products that prep and prime my skin, despite it being in excellent good condition. The Red Carpet Primer, formulated with vitamin C, acacia plant-based filling spheres, hyaluronic acid, and hydrating micro-spheres, was an exceptional product. It delivered exceptional coverage in a neutral tinted base. My skin was incredibly smooth and glowed. I actually found that once the Primer was applied, I didn’t need to apply a foundation, only finishing powder. This was a very impressive product. http://www.emerginc.com

Talika Eyebrow Extender Light Brown ~ While my eyebrows aren’t plucked over, parts of them can use a little help. I fell in love with this product the first time I used it. The clear gel is infused with tinted volumizing fibers that fill in any sparse areas to the brows. The handy twist applicator dispenses just the right amount of product, which is then applied using the soft brush tipped applicator. The Extender keeps the brow beautifully groomed and is also non-drying. While I tend not to use even an eyebrow pencil, I couldn’t believe how much better my eyebrows looked after only one use of this exceptional product. While I don’t follow what celebrity-dom is doing and not a fan of TMZ or other celeb-tell-alls outlets, I do enjoy the opportunity of trying new scents. Two new scents hitting the crowded fragrance field include Celine Dion Signature EDT and Shine By Heidi Klum EDT. Celine Dion Signature is a light scent with top notes of mimosa blossom, guava and pink lady apple; heart notes include jasmine, rose and magnolia blossom; dry down includes musk, amberwood and sandalwood. Shine By Heidi Klum is another light scent with top notes of mandarin, pear, and pink peppercorn; heart notes include mimosa absolute, Muguet and sunflower; dry down includes vanilla, Tonka bean and musk. Both fragrances had a fresh fruity-floral aroma, without being cloying or syrupy sweet. http://www.coty.com

Neuma ~ The hair care company with a conscience that is committed to beautiful hair through sustainability and environmental responsibility. Product formulations are based on ingredients that include certified organic extracts, renewable plant-based ingredients, and are free of synthetic fragrances, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, carcinogens, formaldehydes, and other pollutants. I had the pleasure of experiencing some of their various shampoo formulations; I deferred trying any of the corresponding conditioners, only because I have oily and fine hair to begin with and conditioners just weigh the hair down more. That said, I found the overall properties of these shampoos added just the right amount of conditioning in their shampoo formulation, eliminating the need to also use the corresponding conditioner. Shampoo varieties I tried included their Volume Shampoo, which is geared towards fine hair, such as mine. I also tried Moisture Shampoo for those days when humidity levels were minimal and contributed to drying out the hair. I also tried Renew Shampoo, which is geared towards for those that need to revitalize their hair or just want to “perk” up their hair and refresh it. All varieties cleaned well and rinsed well, leaving my hair in a renewed and healthy state. And while I enjoyed all of the shampoo varieties, I especially liked the Renew variety; it contains organic peppermint, corn mint and coconut oil, and not only smelled exceptionally fresh, but also made my head of hair feel “bright” and fresh. I also enjoyed the refreshing aromas of the other two varieties. I tried one of their hair treatment products, Argan Treatment, which helps to restore, tame and strengthen the hair’s overall vitality, while giving it a healthy shine. (Restaurant Spotlight for the Health Conscious)

Giordano’s Famous Stuffed Pizza ~ This popular multi-location restaurant franchise ordinarily would pose some eating dilemmas for the health-conscious, especially when it comes to choosing from a menu of cholesterol and calorie-laden primarily deep-dish pizza choices; however, I recently had the pleasure of joining one of my dear friends at the Giordano’s in Oakbrook Terrace, IL for lunch. Perusing the menu and their selections of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pasta and pizza, we settled on several items to taste and share that included their Chopped Salad with balsamic and olive oil vinaigrette, Minestrone Soup, Thin Crust Spinach Pizza with Light Cheese, and Chicken Oreganato; the chicken was lightly sautéed and finished off in a sauce of fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, leeks, and oregano; it was served on a bed of linguine. We skipped the bread and butter, as well as dessert. The menu selections we chose were definitely healthier choices. The majority of today’s restaurants offer menu choices that include healthier options. Some restaurant menus are like mini books, and while it may take time perusing everything, and then making a value judgment, it’s worth the effort. And, when in doubt, always ask your server; our server was very helpful in clarifying aspects of ingredients and preparation. Although we didn’t go with the Stuffed Pizza, which this restaurant is known for, their varied menu and our menu choices added a new aspect to this restaurant, which exceeded the dining possibilities beyond the great Stuffed Pizza dimension. It is possible to enjoy healthy food choices in a stuffed pizza restaurant and leave without feeling guilty. http://www.giordanos.com

Now that fall has arrived and the colder months are approaching, our inclination to hibernate and stay indoor, all cozy and warm also becomes inevitable. ~ FALL POTPOURRI ~

I love the season of fall (and even winter) because it signals a time for nature to rest from her rambunctious summer and recuperate, preparing for a rebirth next spring. In my “TRANSITIONING INTO FALL” article, I shared some transitional tips going into fall from the summer. In this edition, I continue this theme, offering my takes on products that transition nicely into the season of fall.

Following are reviews of products for this transitional season. I’ve included a number of skin and body care, hair care, makeup, food and home care, reading resources and even a restaurant review. Be sure to check out the links to the product websites, or search for them on Facebook, YouTube and the like. Many of the sites offer very helpful videos and how-to sketches for product usage, and are another great tool and becoming more familiar with them and how they work and how they’ll work on you. So, enjoy my fall cornucopia, brimming with a bounty of product potpourri!

SKIN AND BODY CARE

Guinot ~ I tried the Large Écran UV, a sunscreen with an SPF30, and Age Logic Cellulair Corps, an anti-aging body moisturizer. Year round sun protection is a must to stave off signs of aging and to protect the skin from the debilitating effects of sun exposure. I loved how the sunscreen product went on and was quickly absorbed into the skin without leaving any type of tacky or greasy residue; the lovely aroma was a plus; product suitable for face or body. The first time I wore the Sunscreen was on one of the hottest and most humid days in the Chicago-area; I’d be outside for at least two hours walking at a garden walk. The punishing and unrelenting rays of sun on my fair skin didn’t stand a chance with this sunscreen’s protection; I was totally unscathed from any sunburn. Key ingredients include vitamin E, horse chestnut, heliotrope, and a proprietary formulation of DNA, sun filters and moisturizers. The Moisturizer is dense, making for a wonderful level of deep moisturization; it was quickly absorbed, and didn’t wasn’t greasy and left no tacky residue. Key ingredients include their proprietary Cellular Life Complex, vitamins E and C, algae, shea butter and passionflower oil. Infusion Organique ~ This relatively new product line is outstanding. Products tried included their Scent Diffuser and Roll-on Eau de Parfum in the Açai Rain scent; and the Parfum de Maison, Hand and Body Wash, and Candle in the Buddha’s Fig scent. Açai Rain is a beautiful scent made up of the açai berry, raspberry, currant, white peach, fresh greens and organic vanilla extract. The subtle fruitiness was mellowed out by the greens and vanilla; ordinarily I avoid fruity aromas, but this one was very sophisticated. Buddha’s Fig combines organic fig extract, rose geranium, organic lemongrass oil, wood and amber essences. The Acai Rain Diffuser emitted its gentle aroma throughout my hallway and into my living room without being cloying; it was crisp, fresh and delicate. I enjoyed the same benefits of this scent in the roll-on EDP. The Buddha’s Fig room spray added a fresh green outdoor scent throughout the rest of my house; the scent subtly lingered. The body wash, also in this scent, while it cleansed well without drying, the lovely aroma wasn’t discernable; the soy candle, also in this scent, burned clean and smokeless and imparted a very subtle amount of its fresh, green aroma. Formulations conform to strict state of California requirements for non-toxicity and sustainability; ingredients are organic wherever possible, or naturally derived. http://www.infusionorganique.com

Navitas Naturals Cacao Power Organic Lip Balm ~ This Lip Balm is seasonless, but really protects the delicate lip area from the assaults of cold weather assaults that can dry and cause cracking of the tissue. Ingredients include organic sunflower and jojoba oil, organic beeswax, organic raw cacao butter, organic chocolate flavor, vitamin E, rosemary extract and organic calendula. Pure, natural and smells scrumptious, while imparting a wonderful protective veil of moisturizing balm that has staying power, so long as you aren’t tempted to eat it. http://www.navitasnaturals.com

Votre Vu Très Magni-Feet Exfoliant Pour Les Pieds and Très Magni-Feet Crème Pour Les Pieds ~ I loved the gentle sloughing-off of dry skin on my feet from the Exfoliant; it was ideal using in the shower. It removed the dry stuff from my skin effortlessly, leaving my skin very soft and subtly moisturized. The Exfoliant ingredients included bamboo, wax microspheres, palmitic acid, panthenol and peppermint oil. This product made my feet happy with silky smooth skin. The Moisturizer ingredients included shea butter, verbena essential oil, arnica extract, panthenol, and menthol. This product had a lovely subtle aroma and drenched my feet with silky hydration. DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom Perfume by Donna Karan ~ This is a lovely subtle airy floral that imparts a fresh veil of just-blossomed flowers. While this fragrance is subtle, it's ideal to wear all year long. I enjoyed it as a pick-me-up. Ingredients include Apricot, Cassis, Grapefruit, Smooth Skin Accord, Blond Woods, Jasmine, Rose, Apple, and Muguet. http://www.fragrancenet.com

Jane Iredale “Naturally Confident” Fall Collection ~ I love this eponymous brand. It continues to define mineral makeup that’s great for the skin, while enhancing what nature gave each of us. With each new season, an exciting new collection of products and color is unveiled. These always capture the spirit and essence of that season. What I also love about this line is that the colors transition into any season beautifully. This season’s Fall Collection, “Naturally Confident”, is phenomenal. LIPS ~ There’s three new colors of Lip Fixation, the dual-tipped wands, where one end is a lip stain with a proprietary formula that is waterproof, anti-feathering and super moisturizing with avocado oil, and the other end is a lip gloss that’s also moisturizing and contains a hint of organic vanilla powder. Cashmere, Taupe, Concord and Tea Tree; colors can be blended to create a lovely customized look, or worn alone. To further enhance the eyes, there's also a soft eyeliner in Rich Brown completes the look. For the lips, there’s the popular Lip Glaze in the color Java, a rich and bold accent lip color with a hint of aubergine. ONE Solid Shampoo and Solid Conditioner ~ These environmentally, earth-friendly compact solids are great alternatives to bottled varieties; one solid is equivalent to three eight-ounce bottles of shampoo or conditioner, which means less packaging waste, a lighter weight product with concentrated formulations, which helps to avoid waste. Packaging is made of recycled materials; the Shampoo Solid comes with its own aerated tin, which helps air circulate and dry the product. I tried the Squeaky Clean for Oily Hair Shampoo and Hair Boost It Does It All Conditioner. The Shampoo key ingredients include almond oil, oat protein, tea tree leaf oil, and panthenol. The fragrance was fresh and left my hair feeling squeaky clean, but without stripping it of natural oils; my hair also had a nice healthy sheen to it. The Conditioner key ingredients include shea butter, Argan oil, oat protein, and macadamia seed oil. The fragrance was also fresh and I found that a little product was all I needed to gently condition my hair, imparting a healthy sheen to it. “Spa Wars ~ The Ugly Truth About The Beauty Industry” By Lora Condon ~ This short read is a must-have for anyone curious about what it takes to make it in the industry as an esthetician and waxing expert, while being bombarded with challenges, difficulties and unique experiences. It takes more than talent, skill and know-how; perseverance and diplomacy are also needed. The author, Lora Condon, is an industry expert; throughout the book, however, she uses “salty” language to make her points, which was a minor distraction. Overall, I commend the author on revealing the truths about some within the industry, including owners, directors, managers, co-workers and especially some of the vile and disgusting clients she serviced over the years, who would challenge even a saint. Ayala Sparkling Herbal Water ~ This brand is known for its delicious and refreshing naturally flavored “still” waters. They’ve expanded their line to include carbonated varieties that are infused with organic natural fruit flavorings and herbs. I tried the Sparkling Ginger Lemon Peel variety and enjoyed its overall taste, which had just the right balance of ginger and citrus; clean tasting and thirst quenching; a great way to enjoy some bubbly without alcohol. The Sparkling varieties also include Lemongrass Mint Vanilla and Cinnamon Orange Peel; the three varieties come in a frosted glass bottle (750ml). Dave’s Gourmet Organic Pasta Sauce ~ These all-natural pasta sauces will make anyone a gourmet chef. Each flavor uses only the freshest vegetables from nature’s bounty, and taste like they were just picked and then immediately cooked. The Red Heirloom variety screamed of fresh off the vine taste. Some of the certified organic ingredients included heirloom tomatoes, carrots, and onions. I loved the simple sweetness that enhanced my sautéed ground turkey, served over meat angel hair pasta. The Butternut Squash variety was deliciously sweet and balanced with the wonderful texture of pureed squash, tomato paste, red bell pepper and other flavorful ingredients that enhanced the flavor of plain gnocchi, topped with a grating of fresh nutmeg. The Masala Marinara variety was more in line with Indian cuisine, than Italian. Indian-influenced ingredients included tomatoes, coconut milk, ginger, limejuice, lemon grass, and lime leaf. Lamb meatballs simmered in this variety complimented the meat, although most meats or fish would go well with this variety. http://www.davesgourmet.com

Esterházy Wines ~ When it comes to wine, I’m not a snob or a purest or a wine expert. I do enjoy the taste of a good wine, and if I like a red with my fish course, I’ll drink it, or a white with my poultry or meat course, I’ll drink it. I came across this brand of premier Austrian wines, which the Esterházy Family vintners have been perfecting since the 17^th Century, at a special luncheon and thoroughly enjoyed their tastes. Following are my taste opinions for each of the varieties experienced: Estoras Grüner Veltiner 2010 ~ I found this white wine to be light, delicate and fruity, with a nice balance between dry and sweet. Blaufränkisch 2009 ~ This beautiful ruby red wine was rich, full-bodied, dry and had a peppery kick. Haydn Merlot 2007 ~ I found the taste to be very comparable to the Blaufränkisch 2009, but a bit drier and with more intense fruitiness. Beerenauselese 2009 ~ I loved this dessert wine, with its lovely rich consistency, beautiful amber color and sweet floral and fruity taste. I also noticed after drinking these wines that I didn’t have my usual headache or stuffed sinuses, which is often the case after drinking other wines. Wine, in moderation, is a healthy addition to any dining experience; I also enjoy cooking with good quality wines, which enhance the overall flavors. http://www.weinbauer.com

Fernando Pensato Extra Vergine Di Oliva and Olio Di Oliva Mandarin ~ These varieties are exceptional and make for delicious dressings and vinaigrettes. The Extra Vergine Di Oliva had a bit of a bite to it, but was mellowed out when other ingredients were added to the vinaigrette. I loved the Mandarin variety, which isn’t an infusion, but rather the fruit is added along with the olive while it’s being pressed to extract the fruitiness of the citrus and olive. Every dish I made that contained either oil complemented and enhanced; both were lovely with sautéed salmon, and a simple salad of shaved fennel, frisée, shallots, roasted pine nuts, orange segments, flat leaf parsley and a splash of white balsamic vinegar mixed with orange juice and the Mandarin Oil. http://www.sandybutler.com

Food Should Taste Good ~ I’m a snacker and when I can get my mitts into something that’s healthy, crunchy, tasty, less in fat and calories, I’m there. It’s no wonder why I fell in love with these extraordinary organic and whole grain chips. Some of nature’s healthiest ingredients in these chips include blue corn, quinoa, flax, sunflower, sesame seeds, brown rice, soy, hemp seeds, etc., making these one of the finest guilt-free and healthy snack chips to keep in your pantry. Whether eaten as-is, or dipped into a fresh-made salsa, or smashed and added to chili, or a hearty soup, or even on top of a salad, these delicious chips intensify the flavor of everything. Varieties I tried included White Cheddar, The Works, Sweet Potato, Jalapeño, Multigrain, Lime, Toasted Sesame, Cheddar, Hemp, Olive, Blue Corn and Chocolate. I promise I didn’t eat all of these at one sitting, although it’s tempting not to eat an entire bag in one day. Navitas Naturals ~ I tried the certified organic 3 Berry-Cacao Nib-Cashew Trail Mix. This trail mix all-natural, raw, kosher, vegan, gluten-free and certified organic trail mix was tasty, although at times, very tart. Oila Green Tea Oil ~ I had never heard of green tea in the form of oil and found this oil an unusual “add” to my culinary oils. The oil has a neutral taste, is clean on the palate, and doesn’t leave any after-taste. It has a higher burn level than olive oil, has less fat grams, is rich in vitamins A, B and E, and has more healthy essential fatty acids, Omega 3-6-9 and EGCG than olive oil. Oogavé – Agave Organic Soda Beverage ~ This all-natural carbonated beverage has just the right amount and balance between carbonation, Agave nectar and natural flavorings and essences. The variety of organic flavors is a welcome change to other overly sweet, or artificially sweet beverages. I found all of the flavors thirst-quenching, clean tasting and very delicious. I loved the eco-friendly glass bottle servings. Flavors tried included Cola, Rootbeer, Ginger Ale, Grapefruit, Mandarin Key Lime, Watermelon Cream, Vanilla Cream and Strawberry Rhubarb. Teatulia Organic Teas ~ The taste of these certified organic teas was clean and refreshing. I love the video on their website that beautifully tells the story behind these exceptional teas; the imagery and background music is also eye appealing. The video tells the story of people, nature and the passion for tea. The Teatulia tea garden is the only one in Bangladesh that has been USDA and SGS Certified Organic. Teatulia offers a wide range of full leaf white, green and black teas, in addition to flavorful tisanes. Dawali Mediterranean Restaurant (Chicago, IL) ~ Mediterranean cultures have always had a healthier lifestyle because of the types of foods that comprise their daily diets. The cuisine is based on healthy, fresh, unprocessed, high fiber, nutrient dense, and seasonal food; the cultures use land and sea to cultivate their cuisine, which explains why it’s so healthy. While the Chicago-area is a vibrant and multi-cultural major metropolitan area, the multiculturalism is especially predominant in the variety of global-centric restaurants. Dawali Mediterranean Restaurant has two prominent locations in Chicago that offer an extensive menu of Mediterranean cuisine, which is more representative of Middle Eastern and Arabian cultures. I dined at the newer, second location (North Halsted Street), which is in a trendy and bustling theater district. The menu was diverse and extensive, and the dining experience delicious, fresh, flavorful, and nutritious. Chef Samer Jabsheh, whose culinary background is impressive, worked his magic with delicious dishes such as Fattoush (chopped salad with toasted bread and sumac vinaigrette), Chicken Shish Kebabs, Lamb Shawarma (marinated and broiled), Kibbeh (bulgur wheat fritter) and a delightful sampler tray of Hummus, Baba Ganouj (eggplant), Ful Mudamas (fava beans), Masaka (grilled vegetable salad) and Falafel (chickpea fritters); the fresh made warmed Pita Bread was also delicious. A real treat was Chef Jabsheh’s special dessert creation using Knefe (baked shredded phyllo dough) shaped like a bird’s nest and filled with a luscious custard cream filling and then topped with seasonal berries. My only issue was that some of the dishes were a bit on the salty side, where the salt almost over-powered the delicate flavors of the dishes. TRANSITIONING INTO FALL

My anticipated “FALL CORNUCOPIA ~ PRODUCT POTPOURRI” will be published soon. Until then, consider the following seasonal transition musings.

~ MY TAKE ~

As I write this, the weather is finally cooler and the humidity is low, both are a welcome relief. A few days ago, the heat and humidity in my area reared its uncomfortable head. This last gasp of summer’s worst lasted for four days and will hopefully not return at all. Even as a child, I always preferred the chill and bite of fall and winter to the summer’s fun in the sun, heat and humidity. I love the seasons of fall and winter. Thoughts of these seasons are beginning to preoccupy me as I daydream about crunching burnished leaves and the sight of snowflakes and being able to see my breath as I exhale.

Already, squirrels are searching for nuts to store for the colder month’s long haul, while blossoms of summer’s flora are diminishing. Deciduous trees have begun to tease me with their twinges of color, while falling leaves are gently covering the ground. Early mornings are beginning to be cooler, making for my meditative walks more enjoyable and meaningful.

~ MY TIPS ~

When a season transitions into the next, such as summer to fall, virtually every aspect of our daily lives also changes, and we need to be mindful of the need to change and adapt. Consider the following for transition tips for fall:

1. Climatological changes, including cooler and drier temps both indoor and outdoor, consider changing your skincare regimen to ramp up product efficacy. What worked well in the warmer and more humid months will probably be inappropriate in the cooler and drier months. Lighter weight lotions should give way to creams and butters.

2. Don’t over-exfoliate the skin; when skin is dry and aggressive exfoliation is done, it can harm the delicate tissue and irritate it. Make sure to use serums and don’t discount the wonders of face oils (e.g. olive, almond, jojoba, Argan, etc.).

3. Colder, drier air will dehydrate the skin. Skin still requires periodic exfoliation with some type of moisturizing soaps or cleansers. Skin needs to be moisturized and rehydrated to replenish depleted moisture levels and also to maintain a healthy mantel of skin.

4. Think darker and richer with your color palette, whether that’s in your makeup colors, or the colors of your wardrobe pieces. Pale and light may have been great for the summer months to deflect the harsh rays of summer sun. Now, an earthy color palette of burnished and vibrantly intense colors of fall, are more suitable. Lighter weight cotton, linen or gauzy material should be replaced with warmer wool, silk blends and heavier cotton and linen fabrics to keep the body heat in as an insulator from the cold.

5. Summer dining generally equates to lighter food fare, like salads, seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbal iced teas, iced fruit infused waters, etc. These were ideal for summer, because they were less taxing on the digestive system, and also kept a person cool. The colder months of fall and winter call for heartier foods like hot cereals, stews, soups, casseroles and the like are ideal for those colder months. These foods are nutritious, but also warming. Consider more dried fruits and nuts and make your own granola. Consider frozen fruits and vegetables, which are quick frozen right after harvesting, preserving more of the nutrient value; they’re a nice reminder of the fresher seasonal produce during the warming months.

6. Seasonal constants include maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes sufficient amounts of water for hydration, sleep to rest and recuperate, physical exercise for strength and agility, and proper nutrition to stave off illness.

7. Continue using an SPF product to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

8. Consider gathering up dried twigs, branches, leaves, etc. and creating an arrangement for a seasonal tablescape, or put them in a large basket and display by your entry.

9. If the colder weather, and shorter days are giving you cabin fever, be sure to keep the spring and summer indoor with live plants and flowers.

10. Take walks to shake the “blues” away and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you; theirs is beauty in the changing of all-things nature.

11. Don’t forget to open your windows every so often just to let some fresh air inside.

12. Lastly, consider making lists of warm weather tasks and cold weather tasks. These can include goals in skincare and body care regimens, meal planning, wardrobe, fitness routines, etc.

LUXURY SKINCARE

I’m blessed with wonderful DNA. When others find out my real age, they’re amazed at how great my skin looks, compared to that age. While I try to avoid the no-nos of behavior that contribute to accelerating the aging process, I also try to achieve a daily life that includes proper and balanced nutrition, reduced stress, a healthy lifestyle, no smoking, plenty of h₂o, getting sufficient rest and physical activity, avoiding the sun, and maintaining a proper skincare regimen.

Admittedly, I fall off the wagon from time to time, but also strive not to make the digression a routine. Still, I’m aging extremely gracefully, and taking a few steps to ensure this continues, which includes using products that aren’t harsh or loaded with chemicals and synthetic fillers, and developing a regimen suited for my needs and sticking to it regularly.

Following are some stellar performing products I want to share with you. Keep in mind that the results were based on my experience and not necessarily indicative of how they’ll work on you. I have a very basic approach to skincare product preferences, including

· product gentleness to my skin, without causing any irritations or reactions, immediately or delayed;

· noticeable improvement in appearance of texture, diminished pore size, fine lines and wrinkles, and for at least a three to four week period based on consistent daily product use;

· hydration levels maintained throughout the day, and for at least a three to four week period based on consistent daily product use;

· a pleasant natural product aroma without any noticeable aromas of chemicals or synthetics;

· a silken luxurious texture of the product that never separates, is well emulsified;

· a texture that is luxurious and silky, and not tacky or greasy;

· a product that is quickly absorbed without leaving any residue;

· a product that isn’t hyped in delivering results, but in fact delivers results because it is an excellent product;

· besides these product preferences for creams and lotions, they’re also applicable for cleansers, toners, masks, serums and exfoliators;

· a printed expiration date on product container or packaging;

· easy to read and understand proper usage instructions; and,

· easy to read list of ingredients.

The products were very gentle to my sometimes-finicky skin and didn’t cause any irritation. The formulations were primarily plant-based with other natural ingredients that were the catalysts for delivering performance dynamics. Some products had neutral aromas, while others were aromatherapeutic. While aroma isn’t indicative of a product’s efficacy, a pleasant aroma never hurts the use of the product. Products included a serum, restorative oils, and creams.

For each product, I followed the instructions to maximize its efficacy, while making certain I didn’t overdose on the amount of product used on my face, a sure fire way to waste product and run out of it more quickly than needed. Most products are available online or at spas that offer treatments using the products and also sell them in their retail boutique. If you have a Facebook account, be sure to search out these companies and “like” them to get all of the latest posted to your wall. The product websites often provide descriptive “how-to” instructional videos or application renderings; YouTube is another resource for step-by-step directions for some of the lines. When in doubt, however, don’t hesitate to contact the product customer service representative for input or clarity on any concerns you might have, or consult your licensed esthetician. Estheticians are extremely knowledgeable on product use and sustained efficacies.

I hope you enjoy my reviews and will consider these products for your own unique and specific skincare issues and regimen. Each product’s formulation has individual functions that protect, renew, regenerate, strengthen, diminish, and hydrate the skin.

Darphin ~ Prédermine Firming Wrinkle Repair Serum (and) Jasmine Aromatic Care

Over the years, I’ve used various Darphin products, but never had an opportunity to experience a Darphin facial. At last year’s ISPA Conference, I finally had the pleasure of experiencing one of their anti-aging facials. I was very impressed with the fact that all of their facials utilize the protocols established in 1958 by the company’s founder, Pierre Darphin. The products and techniques used throughout the treatment exceeded my expectations. I was very impressed with how the products performed on my skin and how much better the overall condition appeared. Prédermine is used in the morning, followed by a moisturizer. Jasmine Aromatic Care is used at nighttime, followed by a moisturizer. (Prédermine $175.00, 1 oz) (Jasmine Aromatic Care $110.00, .5 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Prédermine key ingredients include dill extract, water clover, iris extract (meyanthes trifoliata), red algae (hypnea) and brown algae (padina pavonica). Jasmine Aromatic Care key ingredients include organic Jasmine essential wax, organic rosewood and orange essential oils, organic raspberry pip and muscat oils, and organic avocado extracts.

Results ~ Both products performed exceptionally well, exceeding my levels of expectation. Although each product recommends an application of moisturizer after each use, I didn’t always follow that recommendation and found that the respective treatment products performed wonderfully without an added moisturizer; I opted for this on very hot and humid days; the Prédermine veiled my skin with sufficient hydration throughout the day; the Jasmine Aromatic Care because of its formulation was sufficiently dense and provided a veil of hydration for my nighttime regimen. However, when I did add a moisturizer, the results were intensified and my skin’s hydration level superior.

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ The predominant aroma of Prédermine was a beautiful subtle green floral (dill extract, water clover and iris extract). The predominant aroma of Jasmine Aromatic Care was jasmine.

Guinot ~ Hydra Tendre Soft Wash-Off Cleansing Cream (and) Age Nutritive Dry Skin Dry Skin

I enjoyed using these products and found them to be rich and luxurious in texture. Because of the density of the formulation, very little product was required. Both products would be ideal for the colder months when indoor humidity levels are low and outside temperatures can be “raw”. (Age Nutritive $142.00, 1.6 oz) (Hydra Tendre $38.00, 5.4 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Hydra Tendre key ingredients included extracts of coconut and macadamia oil. Age Nutritive key ingredients included their proprietary Cellular Life Complex (fifty-six different active ingredients) and Omega 3 and 6 (Nutrinergie).

Results ~ Both products were rich and dense. The Cleanser was easy to remove. The cream worked best on its own day or night, but without combining it with other serums or oils; slight irritation resulted due to the rich density of the cream. While the Cleanser left my skin soft, the Moisturizer left my skin wonderfully hydrated; fine lines and wrinkles were diminished, and the overall texture improved.

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ Neutral aroma, both products, with no discernable or singular predominant aroma in either one.

Natura Bissé ~ Diamond Extreme

I fell in love with this dense and luxurious cream for its aroma, its texture and how it made my skin look and feel. Not only did it perform extremely well with hydration levels, this was another product that noticeably brightened and improved the overall qualities of my skin, including firmness, softening of fine lines and wrinkles, diminishing pore size and evening out the skin tone. ($335.00, 1.7 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Extracts of sweet pea, edelweiss and artemia salina, amaranth oil, wild mango and shea butter.

Results ~ Exceptional hydration, noticeable skin brightening, evenness of tone, diminished fine lines, wrinkles and pore size; improved texture and firming. Worked exceptionally well day or night, on its own, and with other serums and oils.

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ Subtle fresh floral blend of the sweet pea and edelweiss; at times, the aroma reminded me of lavender, but no lavender was in the product or listed on the package ingredients.

RODIN ~ olio lusso Face Oil

I was impressed with how well this oil hydrated and left my skin feeling supple; I only used this product at nighttime due to its consistency, and used it sparingly. The formulation is dense with a number of aromatic essential oils. Because of the consistency, I feel the product is ideally suited for colder, drier months. ($140.00, 1 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Jasmine, evening primrose, argan, orange, sweet almond, apricot kernel, jojoba, sunflower seed, rosehip, and calendula.

Results ~ Improved hydration levels, while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. I used this as a standalone product for my nighttime regime, and didn’t mix it with other creams, serums or oils; it would’ve been too rich and probably wouldn’t have absorbed well.

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ The aroma of jasmine was predominant and over-powered any other aroma that might have been present in this formulation.

Shiffa Dubai ~ Tamanu Moisturising Cream

When I opened the jar, inhaled the extravagant aroma and touched the luxurious cream, I knew I had found something truly extraordinary. Once on my face, this cream exceeded all of my expectations. I was thrilled with all of its properties, but especially how well it hydrated and improved my skin’s overall appearance and texture. My skin looked refreshed and renewed. ($115.00, 1.67 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Pure tamanu oil, rosehip, frankincense, rosemary, jasmine, avocado oil, jojoba, and calendula.

Results ~ Exceptional hydration, softened fine lines and wrinkles, brightened skin; skin felt firmer and overall texture noticeably improved. Worked exceptionally well on its own, day or night, and with other serums and oils.

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ Scrumptious and intense melding of all ingredients, with a slight predominance of frankincense. I loved the overall aroma of this product.

Sothys ~ Secrets de Sothys Global Anti-Age De-stressing Care (and) Secrets de Sothys Eye Contour Serum

At last year’s ISPA Conference, I experienced a Sothys massage and facial in the Relaxation Area. This was my first-ever experience with any of the Sothys products. The facial component utilized these two products. While both treatment components were enjoyable, I especially enjoyed the facial and how the products seemed to boost its appearance. (Anti-Age De-stressing Care $133.00, 1.69 oz) (Eye Contour Serum $62.00, .5 oz)

Key ingredients ~ Global Anti-Age De-Stressing Care key ingredients included extracts of apple, bitter orange and iris, avocado oil and shea butter. Eye Contour Serum key ingredients included extracts of prickly pear, iris and bitter orange, and plum oil.

Results ~ The moisturizer hydrated exceptionally well, whether I used it alone, or in combination with serums or oils from other product lines. Both products diminished fine lines and wrinkles and refined overall texture. The eye serum softened

Aromatherapeutic properties ~ The face cream had a pleasantly subtle aroma, while the eye serum didn’t have any, which is as it should be.

While I enjoyed reviewing and using all of these products for a number of weeks, and found them to perform well, my particular favorites included the Darphin, Natura Bissé and Shiffa Dubai. Over the years, I’ve tried many products and navigate between brands every few months. I also adjust my skincare regimen between the seasons to conform to the climatological variances. I mix products from different lines, although I try to use all products from one line. Sometimes mixing things up results in skin irritations, so I stop my own brand of “mixology”. It’s nice to have an esthetician to regularly consult with and from time to time get a professional facial, versus the at-home version, which is never quite the same. I also tend not to prefer cosmeceuticals, because some of the ingredients tend to irritate my skin, which can be finnicky. Over time, I’ve learned to adjust to the “tantrums” my skin can throw. In those times, I pare back considerably anything that is a potential irritant, such as exfoliating, or deep cleansing masks. For me, gentle is best and less is more.

I hope you’ll look into all of these wonderful products, check out their websites, or seek them out at your favorite salon or spa, and book a facial to experience them firsthand before considering buying any of them. Whenever possible, try to get samples to try at home to make sure you’re pleased with the results. Remember, too, that it takes nearly four weeks for cells to turnover and regenerate, so don’t expect “miracles” right way when you’re trying a different product out for the first time. And, don’t fall for the “hype”, especially with the so-called “anti-aging” products. Products can help stave off some of the normal effects of aging, and can slightly improve some of the effects that have already taken effect; however, no products can topically reverse signs of aging without some potent formulations in combination with medical science (injectables, plastic surgery, etc.).

AT-HOME SPA-ING

Recent spa experiences at Avani Spa (Lake Geneva, WI), Kohler Waters Spa Chicago (Burr Ridge, IL) and The Spa at Trump Chicago (Chicago, IL) were not only enjoyable, but the treatments received were therapeutic and restorative. Each treatment experience involved a variety of high quality treatment products that were also available for purchase either at the spa’s retail boutique, or online. Products adapted well to an at-home regimen. Every time I used the different products at home, I was reminded of my treatment experience at each respective spa, making for its at-home use all the more enjoyable.

While the initial treatment product’s efficacy in the spa treatment setting is momentary and not necessary a gauge for long-term suitability, having used the products over a period of time in an at-home controlled environment allowed for me to gauge the product’s efficacy and better determine how the products would improve or maintain the texture of the skin and its firmness over time, and whether or not there was any noticeable improvement to the overall quality of the skin. Other products, such as those used on the body or even hair, had the same criteria applied when determining their overall efficacy and noticeable improvements. For each of the following at-home product reviews, I tried to consistently use each product over a period of four weeks to gauge their levels of effectiveness.

Caveats ~

Before making a purchase of any product at the spa, always consider the at-home suitability before making the purchase. If you enjoyed the results post-treatment, in all likelihood, you’ll enjoy using the products at home. And, as with any product, should contraindications occur, or the performance isn’t at the level of expectation, don’t hesitate contacting the spa. Lastly, be sure to thoroughly understand how to use the products correctly in order to maximize their efficacy and adaptability to an at-home regimen. Consulting your spa professional on these matters, which includes asking questions and seeking their advice, is highly recommended. This approach may not be “science”, but the time spent looking into such matters will yield better results and no disappointments. Based on my experiences, however, this approach works every time.

Why the products work ~

All of these products were gentle, non-irritating, and delivered results. The key to the products includes formulations rich in marine by-products that are nutrient-rich; seaweed, like laminaria digitata, a very dense and potent marine by-product that re-mineralizes, nourishes, hydrates, and restores is a stellar ingredient in this product line. The immediate thing I noticed after using the products was that my skin looked healthier and refreshed. These products drenched my skin with moisture, without leaving any tacky residue; the cream was quickly absorbed and hydration levels remained throughout the day. I loved the gentleness of the Gentle Cleansing Milk and the aroma of the Rosée Toner. A real winner was the Vegetal Exfoliant, an enzymatic peel (papain from papaya) that exfoliated without assaulting or damaging the delicate facial tissue (often the case with harsher exfoliants). The Age-Defense Mask corrects fine lines and wrinkles; it removes easily and leaves no residue; skin is noticeably brighter. The Wrinkle Correction Cream is one of my new faves. I loved its texture and aroma; it definitely improved the look and feel of my skin.

Why the products work ~

Using products rich in Argan Oil on my fine and oily-prone hair seemed counterintuitive. Argan oil, the power ingredient behind this line, has been cherished for centuries for its healing, nourishing, repairing and revitalizing properties. Because of my fine and oily-prone hair, I tend to totally avoid conditioners and hair masks like they were some form of communicable disease. What I end up with is semi-fried and dried feeling and looking hair. Never mind that I think that’s how my type of hair should feel and look after it’s been shampooed. Then, add to this the abuse from styling and blow-drying products, and you have the perfect storm. That is, until I was introduced to Moroccanoil products, at the Avani Spa.

Moroccanoil is THE product that has taken salons by storm, so much so that it’s difficult to keep product stocked for the fanatical devotees. The power ingredient is Argan Oil, which has been used for centuries by women in the Middle East either as a skin-softening agent, hair treatment, or even in food preparations. Although I have fine and oily hair, the marvel of these products was that instead of being weighted down with an oil, my hair was actually volumized, made thicker and healthier to the touch, and of course, it added a luster that I thought I had lost forever as part of the aging process.

The Scalp Treatment is a professional-only formulated product. The Hydrating Mask left my hair wonderfully smooth and silky once the hair was completely dried. And whether the Light Oil was used on either damp (or dry hair to tame the “wild-ones”), it added a beautiful luster and brought my lifeless hair back to life. The Styling Cream heightened the vibrancy of my revitalized hair. I didn’t use all of the products at one time, since that would be “over-kill”. I used the Mask one to times a month, the Scalp Treatment monthly, the Light Oil one to times a week (or on the ends as needed), and the Styling Cream, occasionally (since I’m not one to regularly style my tresses, especially since I have short hair). Not only did these products perform exceptionally well, their aroma was also fabulous. Any Light Oil residue was rubbed into my dry cuticles, all over my hands and onto my elbows; the residue added a good dose of hydration to those areas. I’d love for Moroccanoil to formulate a body lotion. I think it would be another stellar product for their line and one that dull, dry and lifeless skin would greatly welcome!

Why the products works ~

These products are exceptional for a facial regime, but were administered during the facial massage portion of the body wrap treatment. All of the products were gentle and non-irritating. The Cleansing Milk formulation included green tea, algae, aloe vera, apricot kernel oil, orange flower water and grapefruit seed extract. The overall texture was light and non-drying; it rinsed clean, left no residue, and had a neutral aroma. The Thermal Tonic formulation included witch hazel extract, chamomile and rose oil. It was refreshing and removed any traces of the Cleansing Milk. Its aroma was neutral. The Anti-Stress Oil formulation included essential oils of geranium, Melissa and lavender. The product was quickly absorbed, left no residue or tackiness and maintained levels of hydration. The combination of such healing and aromatic essential oils made this product my favorite.

Why the product works ~

This extraordinary oil penetrated deeply into the skin, adding a renewed level of hydration, while also improving the overall texture of the skin. The oil quickly absorbed without leaving any residue or tackiness. This custom blended formulation is rich in oils that nourish, heal and revitalize.

This luxe formulation includes almond, sunflower, macadamia, apricot, sesame, jojoba, evening primrose, orange, damask rose and neroli oils. In addition to providing superior hydration that lasted for hours, the evening primrose, damask rose and neroli oils made for an exceptionally aromatherapeutic product that was delightful to my olfactory sense. Next time you enjoy a treatment at a spa that you truly enjoyed, be sure to check out the spa’s retail boutique before you leave, and see if some of the products used in the treatment are also available for purchase. And be sure to ask a staff member for assistance; they’ll gladly assist you with your purchase and even share with you recommendations on ways to properly use the product at home to maximize its efficacy. ~ CONTINUED EXCEPTIONALISM ~

In the heart of the Windy City, just a strong wind’s howl from the tony Mag Mile, stands the majestic eponymous Trump International Hotel & Tower embracing the city and its iconic river. It’s grand real estate fit for the mogul king of real estate, Mr. Donald Trump.

Trump has always resolved himself to move forward with passionate diligence while pursuing success, despite financial and economic setbacks, the type that would otherwise devastate a less-hardy soul, but certainly not Mr. Trump. While bumps occurred to him in the past, a major one was looming in the road, which caught everyone off guard, except, perhaps, Mr. Trump.

It was the fall of 2007 and while the sky didn’t fall, the bottom of the economy certainly fell. In the midst of construction and too far into the Chicago project for it to be abandoned, instead of Mr. Trump pulling out his hair, he moved forward with the project, and continued to build his eponymous and spectacularly grand hotel with residences. The worm wasn’t going turn on Mr. Trump’s watch.

Part of the “grandness” of the multi-location Trump International Hotel & Tower story includes business travelers and the jet set that parks it regularly in premium landscaped destinations. The enviable portfolio includes Trump New York, Trump Las Vegas, Trump SoHo New York, Trump Chicago, Trump Waikiki, Trump Toronto, and soon to open, Trump Panama. And, while the hotel and residences are all well and good, the word “spa” has always been an integral part of the Trump success. If it’s a Spa at a Trump, then it’s been elevated to be synonymous with all-things Trump-executed; it's grand, glorious, purposeful, restorative, luxurious, and trendy. And, for the guest’s “whatever”, regardless of time and place, or how they define it, this, too, is all part of the execution.

My first The Spa at Trump Chicago experience was shortly after the Spa and Hotel opened in the spring of 2008. I’ve been reviewing luxury properties with spas since the mid-1990s, so I wasn’t any stranger to luxury surroundings or even staff that did their best not to acknowledge why I was there in the first place, despite my being inconspicuous and nonchalant. I’ve done this enough times to also know when I’m getting a snow-job by staff who make me uncomfortable because they’re uncomfortable with my presence. No, setting foot into The Spa At Trump Chicago was totally different, I felt at home, relaxed, comfortable. I was treated just as special any other guest I observed being treated. We were all special; individually, we were treated as though we were the only guests there. This was definitely exemplary of an experience that was Trump-executed. I was Trump-ed.

Items of Interest ~

Spa and Fitness Center are co-located on the hotel’s fourteenth floor. The Spa is 23,000 square-feet and has eleven spacious treatment rooms. A signature amenity for every guest is the Spa Attaché that meets and greets, gives a thorough tour of the complete environs, while explaining every aspect of each individual treatment. They will also assist in making recommendations on certain treatments that will maximize the guest’s intended results from their experience. The Attaché is available throughout the guest’s entire spa experience, up until checkout. This is truly exemplary service!

Fitness Center has a separate room, with additional equipment set out on the floor, overlooking some of Chicago’s impressive architectural scape, Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Also within the enclosed area are two Studios, where classes are held each day of the week; these include Spinning, Yoga, Pilates, Kickboxing, Hula Hoop and others. During warmer months, guests can workout on exercise bicycles on the Terrace. There are currently sixteen group classes held in the Studios and Pool. Hotel guests and local area residents can purchase memberships to the Fitness Center. Also available is a Personal Trainer.

Guests also have access to a magnificent Pool. Unfortunately, there isn’t any whirlpool.

Spa Suites are also available for the discriminating hotel guest that’s fully focused and desires to immerse themselves in total sensory activated spa experience, stress-free and restorative. The fifty-three Suites are conveniently located on the fourteenth floor, opposite the Spa and Fitness Center; one of the elevator banks is even programmed only for registered guest’s to access their floor from the lobby. The Suites are spacious, between 600 and 900 square feet. The rooms offer glorious panoramic views of the city, healthy waters and snacks, exquisite bedding and fabulous bathrooms. Every aspect of the rooms elevates the guest’s well-being and sensory experience, enabling them to achieve optimum levels of relaxation and restoration. This is spa-luxe to the max!

The main entry is the Reception Area and Retail Boutique. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the Relaxation Path of Experience ~ Heal, Purify, Revitalize in the generously sized gender-specific locker areas. The circuit includes the Hot Sauna (Heal), the Steam Room (Purify), and the Deluge Shower Experience (Revitalize).

In the locker room areas, guests also have bathroom access to a unique specialty product bar that includes essential oils geared towards an Intention such as Calm, Balance, Purify, or Revitalize; each oil blend is unique to the guest's desired "intention" .In addition to the custom blended oils, there’s also an aloe vera face mask, an exfoliating body scrub, and a shea body butter. The guests can blend their preferred oil with one of the other products to add an element of aromatherapy to one’s Intention, or can be used alone as a moisturizer. Many guests enjoy the ability to customize their own products before going into either the steam or sauna for an expanded spa treatment experience; the body butter adds a wonderful layer of hydration to skin that has been exposed to rigorous exercise, swimming, steam, sauna, or used after the personal shower or Deluge Shower.

There are individual Relaxation Lounges within the locker areas, and also one enormous co-ed Relaxation Area where healthy snacks, fresh fruit, flavored waters, and hot beverages are available; guests can also request chilled bottled water. The Spa also accommodates guests who wish to dine in the Spa and offers a special menu of healthy selections to choose from, including selections made with certified organic produce and other locally sourced ingredients; a nutritionist has also assisted in the development of the menu.

The approach to the treatment experience for each guest is to focus on the Trump Inspired Personal Intentions. These are the cornerstones of the Spa's guest spa experience, and include treatment options that Purify, Balance, Revitalize, Calm, or Heal. Signature treatment experiences include the Trump Signature Gemstone Spa Treatments. These signature treatments include Balancing Diamonds Massage (Balancing), Purifying Emeralds Massage (Purify), Revitalizing Rubies Massage (Revitalize) and Calming Sapphires Massage (Calm, Heal).

For each unique massage intention, there is a corresponding superior quality essential oil formulation geared towards the energy of each unique massage intention, including actual gemstone particles that emanate their specific form of energy. The use of gemstones (minerals or crystals) has been utilized for many years by many cultures to cleanse, balance, heal, purify and revitalize. These gemstones (minerals or crystals) are also believed to correspond to one’s energy points, or Chakras. The Spa At Trump uses Shiffa Dubai custom infused oils, which also includes minute particles of the corresponding gemstone; the gemstone infuses its own type of gem energy within the formulation.

For my treatment experience, I chose the Balancing Diamonds Massage. My massage therapist was Tameka, and one of the better therapists I’ve had work on me in quite some time. The intention of the ninety-minute signature treatment was to balance my Crown Chakra; the Crown Chakra is the seventh one and located at the top of the head. Additional balancing aspects included providing clarity, inspiring and enlightening me, while massaging me into a state of restorative balance.

Although my exceptional massage therapist, Tameka asked me about my problem areas she should focus on throughout the treatment, my experience has taught me that whenever a highly skilled and experienced massage therapist is involved, they can tell where those areas are just by their skillful touch. I left her skilled touch to find all of my areas that needed massaging, restoration and balance.

Tameka methodically massaged my meridians with a strong and firm, yet painless, amount of pressure; she knew when to ramp it up and when to pull back; experience and skill will do that. Her long fluid strokes, short strokes, deep and light pressure throughout the ninety-minute treatment was gladly received. I was amazed at how pliable my limbs, toes, digits, back, front, neck and head became after this labor-intensive restorative treatment. The massage was intense and every bit of me got a thorough working over. I came into the room stiff and in various stages of discomfort. I left totally renewed and without any of these negative elements. It was one of the better massages I had received in a number of years.

Throughout the treatment, Shiffa Dubai Diamond Body Oil was used. This formulation of pure essential oils contains almond, sunflower, macadamia, sesame, evening primrose, orange, damask rose, chamomile and neroli, were not only effective with their hydration properties, but was deeply aromatherapeutic as well. Based on my experiences, superior quality oils have a pure and intense aroma, such as this product. Inferior grades are irritating in their aromatic properties because of the use of synthetics, fillers, inferior quality oils, etc.

The massage technique naturally warmed the oils as it was applied to the body; it also provided a continuous glide throughout the treatment where my therapist didn’t have to keep stopping to reapply; this is another example of skill and experience on the part of the therapist. In addition to this wonderful product, there were also tiny particles of diamonds, which also infused its own gem energy into the blend; I never felt any of the actual particles, however. In doing a bit of research, I would learn that over the centuries, diamonds have been valued as a symbol of wealth, and in the realm of healing, balance and harmony, diamonds have been revered for their properties of purity, stimulating the Crown Chakra, cleansing, reducing fear, stimulating innate creativity and imagination. In gem therapy, diamonds are also valued as a vehicle towards attaining higher spiritual enlightenment, while removing negativity and any perceived blockages for mental clarity and acuity.

Jim Rohn said, "Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live", which succinctly describes the importance of each of us acknowledging and accepting sole responsibility for our own health and wellbeing, for our very life may depend on it.

WHO LOOKS AFTER YOUR PLACE?

In today’s so-called “modern” society, including Thailand, many people totally outsource their health and wellbeing to medical practitioners, who they rely upon for providing a “response” to even the most minor of ailments. I use the word “response” deliberately, rather than the word “solution”, as so much of what “modern medicine” offers is no more a solution than taking a pill for the rest of your life can be considered a “cure”.

In addition to outsourcing the response, many people also outsource the “knowledge” about their own state of being. Yet how can anyone else, except the owner of the body, who cares to acquire some readily available information and “listen” to their body on a day-to-day basis, know the body better than the well informed owner? In your case, you are your owner!

YOU SHOULD LOOK AFTER YOUR PLACE

Like Jim Rohn, I believe each of us should take self responsibility for our own health and wellbeing, not for the major issues whose only response is the intervention of an experienced medical practitioner, but for all the day-to-day issues which, in any case, if attended to on a timely basis as part of a wellness-oriented lifestyle, can prevent the small issues from becoming the major issues requiring a drastic response, if a response is even still possible.

In fact, by simply focusing on four key aspects of daily life, it is possible to either prevent or cure almost all chronic ailments that millions of people around the world, including in Thailand, now suffer from.

With only one body to live in, with only one life to live, why outsource your health and wellbeing to people or organizations who are most likely only in it for the money!

“MODERN” SICKNESS

The tragedy of the age we live in is that as society’s, like Thailand and others, modernize, the health of the society deteriorates - this is true for “modern/developed” society’s as well as for “developing” society’s.

Chronic, non-communicable ailments and diseases are now the major cause of disability and death worldwide, accounting for 59% of all deaths and 46% of the financial burden of diseases - all due to industrialization, urbanization, economic development and increasing food market globalization.

People worldwide are consuming more foods that are dense in energy, high in sugar, high in saturated fats, high in salt, whilst eating less fresh fruits and vegetables.

NON-LIFE THREATENING AILMENTS

In the United States alone, the prevalence (number of people who have a condition at a given time) of people having selected mostly non-life threatening chronic conditions, but conditions that nevertheless cause disability and diminished quality of life is:

· 1 in 7, 19 million, with anxiety

· 1 in 61, 5 million, with constipation

· 1 in 18, 14 million, with depression

· 1 in 30, 8 million, with dermatitis

· 1 in 18, 15 million, with eczema

· 1 in 5, 54 million, with fatigue

· 1 in 6, 45 million, with headache

· 1 in 26, 10 million, with hemorrhoids

· 1 in 28, 9 million, with indigestion

· 1 in 8, 32 million, with insomnia

· 1 in 9, 28 million, with migraine

· 1 in 49, 6 million, with psoriasis

LIFE THREATENING AILMENTS

In the United States alone, the prevalence of people having selected life-threatening chronic conditions is:

· 1 in 4, 62 million, with cardiovascular disease

· 1 in 17, 16 million, with diabetes

· 1 in 3, 101 million, with high cholesterol

· 1 in 3, 50 million, with high blood pressure

· 1 in 3, 101 million, with overweight

· 1 in 6, 40 million, with obesity

Increasing numbers of people in Thailand are also experiencing non-life and life threatening chronic ailments, in all likelihood due to adopting “bad habits” of so-called modern living, such as eating more convenience, junk and processed foods.

GLOBAL SICKNESS

Being over-weight or obese, has a global incidence rate of 1.6 billion adults being overweight and 400 million adults being obese.

For chronic life-threatening diseases, the major causes of disability and death, on a global basis, are:

· About 220 million people worldwide have diabetes, of which about 1.1 million people per year die from the disease - these numbers are projected to double by 2030. Diabetes is significantly preventable.

· About 12 million people per year are diagnosed having cancer, with the most common being lung, stomach, colorectal, liver and breast cancers. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030. Many cancers are significantly preventable.

· Cardiovascular diseases, caused by disorders of the heart and blood vessels and including coronary heart disease (heart attacks), cerebrovascular disease (stroke), raised blood pressure (hypertension), peripheral artery disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease and heart failure, is the number one cause of death globally - by 2030 nearly 24 million people are projected to die from cardiovascular diseases. Many cardiovascular diseases are significantly preventable.

· Chronic respiratory diseases of the airways and other structures of the lungs, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory allergies, occupational lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension, are suffered by hundreds of millions of people globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 300 million people have asthma, 210 million people have COPD, while millions have allergic rhinitis and other often under-diagnosed chronic respiratory diseases. Many chronic respiratory diseases are significantly preventable.

SIGNIFICANTLY …

A large number of chronic non-life and life threatening ailments and diseases are preventable.

The WHO estimates if the major risk factors for chronic diseases were eliminated, at least 80% of cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes would be prevented and at least 40% of cancers would be prevented.

SIGNIFICANTLY …

The primary modifiable causes of all chronic non-life and life threatening ailments and diseases are well-established, well known and the same three - an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

These primary modifiable causes, expressed through the intermediate risk factors of raised blood pressure, raised glucose levels, abnormal blood lipids, overweight, obesity and stress, sometimes in combination with age and heredity, explain a significant proportion of new cases of cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, some important cancers and diabetes.

According to the WHO, more than 2.7 million deaths per year are directly attributable to low fruit and vegetable intake and more than 1.9 million deaths per year are directly attributable to physical inactivity.

These numbers are incredible, so let me say them again - that’s 2.7 million people dying from lack of eating fruits and vegetables and 1.9 million people dying from lack of physical activity!

SIGNIFICANTLY …

Unhealthy relationships can cause non-life and life threatening ailments and diseases.

Whilst it is not in itself a biological ailment or disease, the deterioration in “relationship health” between people is also of increasing concern in today’s world, including Thailand, due to the potential for unhealthy relationships to cause biological ailments and disease leading to unhealthy bodies.

Especially in “developed” society’s, people are increasingly doing and experiencing less of what makes for a healthy relationship - less caring, children, commitment, communication, empathy, fidelity, interest, love, money, sharing, talking, time, trust, etc. This often results in feelings of anger, disappointment, fear, grief, panic, resentment and sadness, which can cause significant emotional and physical stress.

Left unchecked, significant relationship-induced on-going stress can lead directly to, amongst other ailments and diseases:

· Anxiety and depression, resulting in an inability to function normally.

· An increase in blood pressure, resulting in cardiovascular diseases.

· A reduced production of hormones, resulting in female and male infertility.

· Skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis, resulting in a reduced quality of life.

· A decrease in immune system functioning, resulting in lowered capacity to counteract cancers and chronic respiratory diseases.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR BODY

Keeping your body holistically healthy is the key to life, in practice.

The opportunity for YOU is to be and to stay healthy, by simply designing and living a lifestyle comprised of four key elements:

1. Healthy Diet

Consume more natural/organic algae, crustaceans, fish, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, good oils, legumes, mollusks, mushrooms, natural yoghurt, nuts, seeds, teas, tisanes, water, whole grains. Enjoy free-range chicken, turkey and eggs, goat and sheep cheeses, grass-fed lamb, real butter, wild game. Consume optimal alcohol, coffee, salt. Do NOT consume artificial sweeteners, corn, “food-like substances”, pasteurized or homogenized milk, margarine, processed foods, salty foods, soft drinks, sugar, white wheat flour. Do more chewing. You don’t need a medical practitioner to do this for you, you can do all this for yourself - it’s easy, simple, and enjoyable!

2. Regular Physical Activity

Do on a regular basis, preferably daily, at least a moderate amount, some physical activity that you like doing, such as exercise, sport, playing, running, swimming, walking, yoga, etc. You don’t need a medical practitioner to do this for you, you can do all this for yourself - it’s easy, simple, and enjoyable!

3. Healthy Lifestyle

Do not smoke. Drink the optimal type and amount of alcohol for good health, which is wine, preferably red, no more than one glass per day for women and two glasses per day for men. Get the optimal amount of good quality sleep every night, usually between 6 hours and 8 hours per night. Relax, let go. You don’t need a medical practitioner to do this for you, you can do all this for yourself- it’s easy, simple, and enjoyable!

4. Healthy Relationships

KOHLER WATERS SPA CHICAGO ~ REDUX

~ RETURNING TO A VERY GOOD THING ~

Kohler, the eponymous luxury brand for all-things-water, is also synonymous with “spa”. There are three luxury Kohler Spas; their flagship one is located in Kohler, WI (The American Club Resort Hotel); also in St. Andrews, Scotland (Old Course Hotel, Gold Resort & Spa); and, the Chicago location, which is actually located in Burr Ridge, IL, one of Chicago’s tonier suburbs.

While I’ve not yet experienced the Spa in Scotland, I’ve experienced the flagship one in Kohler, WI on a number of occasions. This location is less than a four-hour drive from my home. The Chicago-area location is less than twenty miles from downtown Chicago, and less than eight miles from my home. When I need a Kohler “fix”, I head to this location.

First opening in 2008, the gorgeous spa is 10,200 SF and boasts a twenty-five foot figure eight shaped whirlpool, with a drop waterfall. This impressive water feature is the Spa’s focal point. Along with this feature, there’s the unique Circle of Tranquility, which is a series of three distinctive shower experiences (Quench, Envelop and Deluge), all using the latest and most therapeutic Kohler hydro-technology; there’s also steam and sauna available to guests. Within this area is a very comfort-inducing Relaxation Area. Behind the perimeter of the co-ed area are fourteen treatment rooms and individual locker facilities for men and women. The outer areas of the Spa include Reception, Retail, Make-up and Nail. There are fourteen treatment rooms, including Vichy wetrooms. The overall design of these areas might seem noisy, but acoustically, the areas remain quiet (unless, of course, there’s an overly exuberant guest who can’t contain themselves). Spa cuisine is available; guests can chose everything from salads to sandwiches and wraps off of a special menu; guest orders are served in the Relaxation Area. At this time, no fitness classes are offered at this location.

If all of this isn’t sufficient to get one’s “Kohler Waters Spa Fix”, there’s also a beautiful Kohler Design Store contiguous to the Spa. Here is where dreamers and renovators alike can whet their appetites and refine their bath and kitchen wish lists and work with on-premises design experts on that once in a lifetime project, while viewing in-store displays and other sample inventories. Considering all that’s readily available for the guest, about the only thing missing are rooms for an overnight stay; a nearby Marriott Hotel has partnered with the Spa; registered guests can get a 20% discount on their treatments just by showing their hotel key card; this offering runs through December 31^st. Also, members of Chicago-area Lifetime Fitness also qualify for a 20% discount on treatments.

I scheduled a Kohler Waters Wrap (seventy-five minutes); this is a seasonal body treatment that’s only offered until May 30^th; however, I wouldn’t be surprised if this weren’t added to the regular menu of services, since it’s very popular and adaptive to any seasonal transition, depending on the products used.

The treatment therapy is a wonderful multi-layered ritual, which combines exfoliation, detoxification, extremity manipulation, and facial and scalp massage. While exfoliation, detoxification and jump-starting the lymphatic circulatory system lead to warmth from seasonal chill, the overall effect was balancing, relaxing and restoring.

My therapist was Lead Esthetician Renata. The treatment began with my inhaling a small amount of a special blend of Kerstin Florian professional-grade organic essential oils (Lavender, Eucalyptus and Orange) to calm and balance me. A full-body dry brushing, using the Supracor Bath Mitt, prepared my skin for the next step, which was an application of the organic essential oils blended with Kerstin Florian Organic Sunflower Oil.

After the oil application, a special professional-grade blend of detoxifying Chinese Medicinal Herbs (Bio Elements) were applied to my body in small circular patterns, which caused a subtle massage action, while also diffusing the herbs. The herbs included Kai Chin So (calming, soothing), Shan Zhu Yu (soothing, nourishing), Fu Pen Tzu and Da Za0 (natural alpha-hydroxy acids) and Da Zao. The alpha-hydroxy herbs exfoliated, while the others detoxified. After this thorough application of oil and herbs, I was wrapped in several layers of sheeting and blankets, and rested. After about fifteen minutes or so, I was then escorted to the in-room shower, where I carefully rinsed all of the herbs from my skin. I returned to my treatment table, and my therapist applied more custom blended oils to my skin. After this, I was again wrapped and allowed to rest for another twenty minutes or so. While resting, my therapist began applying a series of Kerstin Florian products. First, my face was cleansed with the Rehydrating Neroli Cleansing Gel; after product removal, my face was spritzed with the Rejuvenating Thermal Tonic toner. Then, my entire face was gently massaged with Organic Anti-Stress Aromatherapy Oil. As my eyes remained closed, cool stones were placed around the orbital areas and also my upper nasal areas; the cool stones stimulated circulation. As I continued resting, my therapist massaged my scalp and then applied the oil blend to my feet, while gently massaging them; she then covered my feet with warm toweling. After my period of rest, all sheeting and blankets were removed and my entire body was spritzed with a final application of Kohler Signature Avocado Spritz. As I exited the treatment room, Renata was waiting with a glass of water for re-hydration, and then escorted me to the lovely Relaxation Area, where I’d continue my state of relaxation. I was in the spa-zone. This was an exceptional treatment that got rid of the winter “blahs” and instilled in me some spring “ahs”. My skin was silky smooth and wonderfully hydrated. The subtle imparted aroma left on my skin was very calming and relaxing.

My only regret with my experience was that I didn’t come prepared with my bathing suit so I could fully experience the Circle of Tranquility shower experiences and the gorgeous waterfall and whirlpool. But, Kohler staff are so accommodating that I was given a return invitation pass to experience these amenities.

Upcoming Spa Events ~ Now through May 26^th, a “Mom and Me” specially priced nail event for girls ages 8-13 and their moms. May 26^th, the Spa’s cosmeceutical skincare brand, Skin Authority, is offering a one-day “Get Rich Event”; the best of skincare event will be educational and interactive, with demos and how-tos on the latest in skincare; the event will also introduce their newest “Ultra Rich Moisturizer” product, in addition to express facial treatments. One last thing…..on May 14^th, I attended a “Splashtacular” event, held at this location’s Kohler Store, which featured popular HGTV Show Host Monica Pedersen. During the half-day seminar, there were informative presentations and Q&A interaction on all-things Kohler for the bath and at-home spa elements. Product benefits, along with sensory-driven aspects were also emphasized. I was also impressed with the extensive product line’s design and functionality as being eco-centric, including in areas of water conservation and energy efficiency. Some attendees came equipped with sketches and lots of questions for their home projects; one-on-one “speed design bathroom makeovers” were offered by in-store expert designers. Marketing Manager Lynn Schrage gave other presentations. Attendees were treated to an interactive one-on-one with Spa Massage Therapist and Aromatherapist, Ross. Each attendee scoped out their likes and dislikes in aromas and then spent time discussing benefits of aromatherapy with him; he then created a custom-blend of essential oils based on their preferences. The only disappointment with the event was a no-show by Topaz Restaurant; they were scheduled to do a spa cuisine cooking demonstration; Topaz is the Spa’s food provider. Aside from this glitch, overall the event was impressive, and I left with a better sense of the product line and how it reflects the latest in innovative feature design, form and functionality. All attendees left with ample product literature and reference material. Given the presentation, it’s no wonder why many homes, retail establishments, hotels, resorts and spas use the Kohler brand for their needs.

Back on point…Kohler Waters Spa Chicago is an exceptional spa. It’s very accessible, the design and layout is extremely beautiful, it offers an expansive menu of services, and features awesome water-focused amenities. It is the latter which exemplifies the Kohler name ~ all-things water, which is also what “spa” is all about.

In Memoriam ~ This edition is dedicated to my dear cousin Bobby Centano, who died unexpectedly April 15, 2011. He was family and friend, but also an extraordinary person, fellow musician and lover of life. He touched the lives of many. He loved many and many loved him in return. Bobby was the type of person that if he only had one remaining shirt and someone needed it, he wouldn’t hesitate giving it to them. He’ll be greatly missed. My “Transitioning Into Spring” and “Spring Bouquet” editions framed aspects of the seasonal change and transitioning from winter into spring, with helpful hints and an array of product reviews. This edition continues with more product reviews just in time for this hopeful season of transition and change.

~ For Face and Body ~

Crabtree & Evelyn ~ This favorite brand has introduced an array of floral-based products. I had the pleasure of trying the new Iris Bath & Shower Gel and Iris Body Lotion. The fragrance formulation is based on orrisroot

from the Iris flower; the characteristic aroma is also blended with sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver. To me, the aroma reminded me of violet. I loved using the Gel; it had a wonderful rich lather that left a subtle aroma; it also left my skin soft and hydrated. I also loved using the Lotion; the silky rich consistency went on effortlessly, absorbed quickly without leaving any type of residue; shea butter, coconut oil, glycerin, and almond oil made the product very hydrating, while leaving a fresh and lovely subtle aroma.

GloProfessional ~ gloTherapeutics is one of the two product lines of this brand. This line is dedicated to treatment products in the skincare range and are cosmeceuticals; gloMinerals is the other line; it’s comprised of a full-range of mineral makeup for lips, eyes and face. I tried the gloTherapeutics gloProtecting SPF 30 and gloBarrier Balm. The gloProtecting SPF 30 had a pleasant lotion consistency that went on easily, was quickly absorbed, left no tacky residue or hint of SPF ingredients (like so many other similar products); this product can also be used as a light moisturizer. I then applied the gloBarrier Balm over this product to create a layered barrier. The Balm’s consistency was very dense, so only a little of the product was needed; after warming a small amount in the palm of my hand and then applying to the face, it was a bit sluggish and didn’t have that much glide; it also left a tacky residue. Applying the Balm was all I really needed for maximum hydration.

Goldfaden Skincare ~ Goldfaden is a cosmeceutical line with a base of organic and natural ingredients. The primary ingredient being organic red tea, South African Rooibos; purportedly the antioxidant potency of Rooibos is some fifty times stronger than Green Tea. The line consists of products that are free of parabens, alcohol, artificial colors, silicone, mineral oil and petrochemicals. I tried a number of products over a period of approximately four weeks that were representative of this comprehensive line. These included Revelation Pure Clarifying Mask, Red Tea Infused Daily Exfoliant, Stem Cell Skin Serum, Revolution Eyes, Alpine Rose Stem Cell Cream, Pure Power Antioxidant Complex, DNA Telomere Cream, Arnica & Vitamin K Renewal Cream, and Sleep Renewal Night Cream. The Alpine Rose Stem Cell Cream, Pure Power Antioxidant Complex, DNA Telomere Cream, Arnica & Vitamin K Renewal Cream, and Sleep Renewal Night Cream were my favorites, with the Alpine Rose Stem Cell Cream being by far the most enjoyable product I tried. All of these products I found to be gentle and revealing a slightly improved overall texture of my skin; none of these products was harsh or irritating; products were quickly absorbed, left no residue and had a silky texture to the formulations, which also translated to my skin feeling silkier and smoother. Least favorite products, due to formulations that were either too harsh or irritated my skin, included the Clarifying Mask (drying), Daily Exfoliant (harsh) and Stem Cell Skin Serum (reactive skin); and, the Revolution Eyes. From my experiences, cosmeceutical-based products are often too harsh, have limited hydration, and cause irritation, including dryness; I’ve found this to be true even with formulations based in organic and natural ingredients.

JAMU Asian Spa Rituals ~ I’ve always loved using these products either at-home or in a spa treatment setting. When it comes to a favorite aroma, I have many, but among them is lemongrass. I’ve always enjoyed the soothing aromatherapeutic properties of green-based aromas such as this one. This line’s Thai Lemongrass Massage Oil and Thai Lemongrass Hand and Body Lotion transported me to places removed from my reality. Both products are dense with organic ingredients that hydrate; some of the ingredients include shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, bamboo, lily and lotus extract, rosemary and lavender. The Massage Oil works well on both wet or dry brushed skin; it’s non-greasy, quickly absorbed and doesn’t leave any residue. The Body Lotion has a rich, dense consistency that is also non-greasy, quickly absorbed without leaving any tacky residue. Both products deliver exceptional hydrating results, while being aromatherapeutic. An application of either product will quickly cause stress to dissipate.

~ Esthetics and Beyond ~

L’Occitane ~ Just in time for the season, this popular brand has unveiled their new Pivoine Flora, a delicate fresh floral scent. Head notes include crisp and bright bergamot and grapefruit; heart notes include extracts of peony, magnolia and violet; and, base notes include vanilla, cedar and musk. The heart notes define this lovely fragrance. Dry down is subtle, light and airy, and wasn't at all cloying. Expanding this popular brand is the new seasonal palette of makeup for lips, eyes and cheeks. I tried the Facecolor Cream Duo Tint #2, Arabesque and Apricot. Arabesque is a subtle neutral color with a hint of beige; Apricot is the season’s trend color that is bright and fresh, but not shocking. Both of these natural colors can be worn individually, or blended to customize a new color dimension; colors blend easily without fading; besides adding an awakening color to the cheeks, eyes pop with a hint of color added to the upper lids. The colors are ideal for most skin tones. Lastly, another plus for this line is the fact that all of their packaging includes product information in Braille.

The Thymes ~ Another favorite line of mine, offers an array of product collections that range from home fragrance, candles, bath and body. The Thymes has also made it easy for customers to identify the fragrance profile for each of their collections in categories like green, floral, citrus, aromatic, oriental, woody, or gourmand. Tying in with the season, I wanted to experience some of their various “green” collection items. I tried the Azur Triple Milled Soap, Naia Body Lotion, and Olive Leaf Cologne. The Soap included restorative ingredients like phytomarine complex of mineral and plant extracts, moisturizing oils like coconut, Evening Primrose and vitamin E; this very gentle bar left my skin hydrated and subtly fragranced with a fresh clean and green scent. The Lotion thoroughly hydrated my skin with benefits of shea butter, coconut oil and vitamin E; quickly absorbed and no tacky residue, not only was my skin revitalized, the combination of water lily, cyclamen, citrus and lychee aromas made for one delightfully energizing and uplifting experience. The Cologne was lovely; ingredients included olive leaf extract, olive oil and vitamin E; the top note is fruity with a soft floral dry down; very uplifting, fresh and green.

Elizabeth Arden ~ I’ve always enjoyed the fresh, light airiness of the scent of “green tea”, and the Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Scent Spray version doesn’t disappoint. Head notes include citrus, lemon and rhubarb; heart notes include peppermint and oak moss; and, base notes include anchor scents of musk and amber. This fragrance isn't cloying or strong. The dry down is subtle, but continues revealing a fresh, light and airy fragrance. This scent is an ideal pick-me-up.

~ Healthy Tasties ~

Go Picnic ~ Go Picnic Ready To Eat Meals are a healthy alternative for on-the-go quick eating fixes. I tried the delicious Hummus + Crackers variety. The all-natural, gluten-free, vegan, Kosher, GMO-free and no artificial flavors included Wild Garden Hummus Dip, Crunchmaster Multi-Seed Crackers, Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame, Sweet Perry Orchards Baja Blend Fruit & Nut Mix and a Terra Nostra Organic Dark Chocolate Square. The complete meal required no refrigeration and came complete with eating utensils. Nutritional value included 24g of protein, 12g of fiber and a total of 410 calories. I also tried their tasty Steak Nuggets + Cheese variety. These tasty convenient meals are deal for work, beach or picnicking.

Wei of Chocolate ~ Wei of Chocolate isn’t known for the garden-variety pop ‘em in the mouth mindless chomping pieces of candy. They’re hardly that. These dark chocolates are organic, gluten-free, vegan, eco-conscious, fair trade, mindful and healthy; each variety is formulated with an infusion of flower essences by Lotus Wei Organics. The flower essence infusions don’t add any flavor to the dark chocolate; all it adds is a unique energy and intent. Meant for savoring and contemplating, I tried three different varieties that included Café Wei, Wei Joyful and Wei Dark. Café Wei is infused with espresso, and contains 68% cacao; the flower essence infusion is for energy and protection. Wei Joyful is infused with citrus, and contains 70% cacao; the flower essence infusion is for awakening insight and wisdom. Wei Dark is pure dark chocolate with 70% cacao; flower essence infusion is for more joy, peace and inspiration. All three varieties were not only mouth-watering awesome, but I found as I savored each piece, reflecting on the flower infusion’s intent, these delicious dark chocolates were also therapeutic and reminded me of taking the time to be a part of a less stressful space.

~ Miscellany ~

A few take-with items to use at-home or in your travels might include Olivia Garden Healthy Hair Bamboo Brush, Ola Hawaii Kukui Travel Candle and OKA b. The Bamboo Brush I tried was a full round with boar bristles; bamboo, an eco-friendly and sustainable material, regenerates more quickly than tree wood; the bamboo material made the product lighter and easier to handle while styling; the bristles gripped my hair nicely. The Kukui Candle is made of coconut oil and Sacred Hawaiian Kukui nut oil; the burn is clean, even and smokeless; I enjoyed the Paradise Plumeria scented candle, which added a subtle and lovely aroma to the air; adds a nice floral aroma to the air even when not burning. Fashion-savvy aficionados in and out of a spa setting wear OKA b. Sandals. I loved my Tiffany Thong-Style Sandal; it was adorned with a cute leopard print bow. Design comfort aside, next time you have access to any of their styles, turn the sandal over and be sure to check out the soles; they’re complete with an intricate nature-inspired design of trees and whimsical birds; sweet.

CLOSER IS BETTER

A recent trek back to the popular Lake Geneva, WI resort area had me longing for warmer, balmier temps. Still, I was very grateful that my only hassle was driving less than three hours from the hecticity of Chicago’s southwest suburban sprawl. Given the choice, my preference of late is to drive to a destination, versus putting up with the hassles of flying. And while gas prices to go north, I’ll take them any day over the surprise du jour of the not-so-friendly skies.

The Lake Geneva area is so named because of the area’s largest fresh-water glacially formed lake. And while history has this area dubbed as the Hamptons of the Midwest or the Cape Cod of the Midwest, because of the concentration of the who’s-who among Midwestern corporate glitterati who trained their way to this area for refuge during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and whose mansions to this day dot the hilly glacial landscape, even someone as humble as myself, can always feel welcome among the moneyed and well-healed.

That said, I had the pleasure of doing a quick two-day stay at the storied and popular Abbey Resort & Avani Spa. I’ve frequented this resort and spa destination a number of times since 1989 for spa-centric visits. The Avani Spa emerged as the second-generation spa for the resort in 2008 after a total renovation. Its new name is Sanskrit for “…of the earth…”. Prior to 2008, the spa was known as Fontana Spa, and made its debut in 1989.

When the Fontana Spa opened, it was a true (old school) destination spa, complete with multi-day programs (3, 5, or 7 days) that focused on healthy cuisine, fitness classes and therapeutic spa treatments. The meals conformed to recommended daily allowances of around 1,200 calories, and were well rounded with the recommended daily allowances back then for protein, fruits, vegetables, dairy and fats. Menus clearly indicated the limited food choices guests could chose, each with a corresponding caloric number, so guest’s could do their own math; there was a dedicated spa chef who dutifully developed each menu and oversaw the spa kitchen. Guests were on an honor system to adhere to the recommended maximum daily intake of food and calories; it was presumed that no cheating ever occurred, although it was tempting to inconspicuously visit the resort’s gift shop, which was well stocked with all things no-no for the spa guest, pick a few cellophane wrapped treats and pay for the guilty pleasures in cash, of course. There were never any public confessions or floggings, nor room searches for the contraband. Each day there were several fitness classes, including health walks outdoor and several spa treatments. Back then, the novelty of a destination spa experience was slowly taking hold, even in the Midwest. I also remember that my room was a few feet from the spa entrance, and in the block of rooms set up for spa guests; it also had a welcoming vase of lovely flowers greeting me each of the three day’s I was a guest.

The spa represented the area’s largest European-style spa. At 35,000SF and seventeen treatment rooms, it also contained separate areas for men and women, each equipped with its own enormous whirlpool, steam, and sauna. There were connecting hallways to the spa’s enormous atrium pool, which was solely dedicated for the spa guest (look ma, no kids!). The spa atrium pool provided guests with a place to do their laps, or take a soak in the built-in whirlpool, or juice-up, eat fruit, or drink flavored water, read, relax, have lunch delivered, or participate in daily aqua aerobics class. It was a temptation to hog a chaise lounge chair and try and veg for hours, but the spa schedule had to be maintained and spa-ing at a destination spa was serious business.

The spa was also the first in the area to introduce the concept of thalassotherapy-based treatments, including the first-ever such spa in the area to use Phytomer Products. Other first-ever type treatments included herbal wraps, salt glow, and mud treatments. And, while no longer offered on today’s menu, it also offered the area’s first Scotch Hose-Swiss Shower treatment; this circulatory therapeutic treatment has historical roots that go back to the turn of the Nineteenth Century; many international spas continue offering this treatment to their spa guests. I recall how I felt after the treatment, incredibly exhilarated!

Fast forward. The Avani Spa continues the tradition of offering therapeutic and healing spa treatments in a restorative environment. It continues offering its guest regularly scheduled fitness classes and seasonal treatment package specials; there’s also a wonderful retail area for guests who want to take the spa experience home with them. The amenities remain very impressive, but my all-time favorites are the whirlpool in the Women’s Relaxation Area, Sauna, and the exquisite Spa Atrium Pool.

For this visit, I experienced a Phytomer Custom Facial and a Moroccanoil Aqua Embrace hair treatment. My esthetician was Sarah, who was an absolute dear, as she recalled giving me an in-depth body treatment a few years back. Licensed estheticians, such as Sarah, are certified to also give certain body treatments in addition to facials. Sarah has also been affiliated with the spa since it first opened, which is a tribute to her commitment and passion for spa and wellness, but also her dedication to the resort and its spa.

The Phytomer Custom Facial exceeded all of my expectations. First, it started with a total upper-back massage and moisturization; after flipping over, the magic of the facial began with a scrupulous cleaning, gentle enzymatic exfoliation, steaming, rehydrating mask, toning and in-depth moisturization. While the mask was working its magic and my eyes covered with an eye mask, my feet, hands, arms, shoulder area and neck were gently massaged and also moisturized. (N.B. an upcoming edition devoted to the review of the Phytomer products used is on the horizon, so stay tuned.) This incredibly relaxing treatment that left my skin glowing, refined and rehydrated.

The Moroccanoil Aqua Embrace was given to me by Michelle, a multi-year spa professional trained in the areas of cosmetology, which also includes hair and nail work. If you’re not familiar with Moroccanoil, in a few words, it is “the it” product and has been for a few years now. It is an enormously popular Argan oil-based hair care line (at the recent Chicago America’s Beauty Show, this exhibit was a must-visit, but nearly impossible to get to due to the swarms of attendees clamoring to get up close and personal with this must-have product line). The product line is available for normal hair and hair that is fine, thinning or chemically treated. My hair type was fine, so all of the products used were geared towards restoring and rehydrating this hair type to healthy and vibrant levels. My treatment began with an intense scalp treatment, followed by a restorative hair mask, which was followed by a thorough rinse and then meticulous application of the precious Argan oil-based product. My head was then covered and I went under the hood for about twenty-minutes until the cumulative effect of all of the products had a chance to set in my hair follicles. My hair was still slightly damp, but a gentle styling was done. My hair was noticeably shinier and healthy looking; the texture also was less fine and seemed to have more body.

Throughout the year, the resort activities and spa treatment menu change and adapt to the seasons. The restaurants offer cuisine that’s refined or playful. Group meetings and weddings are a very popular aspect of the resort, and often include aspects of spa for attendees and guests. In addition to this being the ideal singles, couples, group or family destination, the Abbey Resort & Avani Spa also represents one of the finest Midwest destinations. Whatever the season, here is a place that thrives in the summer, but also adapts to the stillness of winter. Spring and fall are glorious times with all of the vegetation blossoming and fading. Seasonal sports, including fishing, golf, tennis, hiking, swimming and the like are additional guest attractions. Pack a lunch or romantic dinner and rent a boat to cruise on the beautiful Lake Geneva. Or, shop at the resort or take a quick trip into town for antiquing. The Abbey Resort & Avani Spa has it all. And, it’s closer and definitely better!
