GOING GREEN
~ AT-HOME ECO-CENTRICITIES ~
PART II

PART II

(…Part I was posted to my digital magazine August 9, 2010…)

An extension of spa is the relevancy of wellness. Spa and wellness is no different than being environmentally conscious, because doing so fosters involvement of self for the well being of the planet. Each of us is taking on their own personal agenda to accomplish ways of being green, eco-centric, or organic. Some of this is motivated by family and our circle of friends and colleagues, or health concerns, or becoming enlightened through the normal cycle of learning and acquiring information. There is little doubt that adopting a greener, more eco-friendly approach to living, in every facet of life, contributes to improving the planet, while improving one’s health.

Following are some highlights of products that adapt well to the at-home spa concept of wellness, consciousness, and eco-centric. While these aren’t totally indicative of the wealth of household and foodstuff related commodities, consider that ten years ago there wouldn’t have been that many choices and what little there was, wasn’t necessarily the best tasting or best quality. Technologies have changed. This change has also made it better for manufacturers, producers, growers and suppliers. They’re all listening to the consumer wanting more products and opportunities, and ones that are of a higher quality, using better ingredients, that are more planet-friendly, including natural or organic wherever possible.

So, keep talking, inspire others through example and make a difference to those who are also trying to make a difference. Remember, even the advanced started out being inexperienced.

Products Featured ~ Celsius, GliSODin, Golden Door, GrabGreen Home, Green Pan, HINT, Joya Terrace, Rev3, USANA and Wings of Nature…..

~ LIBATIONS & NUTRICEUTICALS ~

CAVEAT ~ While any one of the following products can complement a healthy lifestyle, none of them are meant to substitute proper nutrition and exercise regimens. When in doubt with any of these products, especially if you’re under the care of a physician or taking medication, read labels carefully and if you have any questions, consult your healthcare practitioner or the product’s manufacturer.

Energy Drinks ~

Celsius Your Ultimate Fitness Partner is a nutritional, fast acting, calorie burning, rev-up the metabolism energy drink. The drink is available in a variety of flavors, including non-carbonated versions like Lemon Iced Tea, Strawberry Kiwi, Raspberry Açai, Peach Mango, and carbonated versions like Orange, Wild Berry and Cola. Just a few drinks of the Raspberry Açai immediately warmed me and I could feel my pulse accelerating; I definitely was charged up. I found the taste to be overly sweet from the use of Stevia, a very potent, albeit natural sweetener. The product’s proprietary formula, MetaPlus, delivers the calorie burning, fat reduction, metabolic energizing and is backed up with clinical data to support that when its products are used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise routine, weight loss will occur. Ingredients include green tea with EGCG, guarana, ginger, calcium, caffeine, chromium, Vitamins B and C, and biotin. The drink is also available in powder packets that are a convenient take-with and easy to add to water.

REV3 Energy is another dietary supplement and potent energy drink that’s made without any artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives or colors. Its proprietary formula allows for a graduated energy boost over a period of time, versus the surge and drop in energy levels other drinks sometimes cause. Caffeine from green and white tea is the energy boost to this vitamin-packed drink. Included are anti-oxidants and phytonutrients that aid in optimizing cellular health, including Coenzyme Q10, Vitamins B1, B2, Niacin, and B6, ginseng, aloe vera, grapeseed extract, calcium, biotin, pantothenic acid (as Vitamin D), magnesium, extracts of acerola, olive leaf, red vine leaf, black currant, and vegetable juice. The base is reverse osmosis carbonated water, along with crystalline fructose and evaporated cane juice syrup. Also backed up with clinical data to support that when the energy drink is used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise routine, weight loss will occur.

Fruit Essence Waters ~

HINT Unsweetened Essence Water has a simple tagline, “Dink Water, Not Sugar”. And as more and more consumers become savvy to the accumulative and debilitating effects of sugar, especially as an additive to
beverages and food items, HINT is the perfect way to combat the urge to quench the thirst with something “sweet”, but has zero calories. Each of their ten flavors is comprised of a few simple ingredients, like purified water, fruit essence and “other” natural flavors; on the latter, perhaps they used stevia, Agave syrup, rice syrup, apple or pear juice as a sweetener (I couldn’t determine what they were using, but it didn’t leave an after-taste, a sure indication for me of an artificial sweetener being used). Whatever they’re using in this category makes for a deliciously quenching and subtly sweet fruit water. I tried Raspberry-Lime, Strawberry-Kiwi, Blackberry, Watermelon, Mango-Grapefruit and Pomegranate-Tangerine.

Nutriceuticals ~

GliSODin ~ Advanced Daily Formula’s ingredients have been selected to complement the therapeutic value of GliSODin. Ingredients include Krill Oil, which naturally contains a potent antioxidant, astaxanthin, which is rich in omega-3s; it helps to provide hydration to skin cells and reduce inflammation that can lead to red spots and dry itchy skin; Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil, which is nutrient-rich in vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids to promote skin clarity and immunity; Cacao Bean, which is high in dietary flavonoids to enhance dermal circulation and antioxidant action; and, Hyaluronic Acid, which provides structural integrity for the skin and collagen to improve skin firmness. Although my skin is in enviable condition, after a few weeks, it improved even more so and looked fresher, healthier and brighter.

GliSODin ~ Advanced Detoxification Formula’s ingredients have been added with GliSODin® to support the detox process, and include Berries and Chardonnay Grapes, which provide a full-spectrum of nutritious antioxidants for optimal health and radiant skin; Alpha Lipoic Acid, which chelates heavy metals and neutralizes several types of free radicals; Milk Thistle, which contains a mixture of flavonoid complexes that protects and promotes liver cleansing; NutraFlora (sc-FOS), which is an excellent source of soluble fiber that aids in digestive and elimination processes, while also assisting in weight loss; and, Broccoli, which is high in sulforaphane that induces phase II detoxification enzymes for enhanced cleansing. Predominant taste is berry and rather pleasing, especially first thing in the morning; I definitely had more energy without feeling jittery. I also didn’t feel hungry or have snack-attacks. I did, however, experience uncomfortable flatulence; occasionally, I also had swings of warm and cold. My body was definitely adjusting to the change detoxification can bring about.

USANA ~ Proflavanol C100 and Hepsalil DTX use the proprietary Nutritional Hybrid Technology that combines formulating and manufacturing multiple layers of different products that function as one to produce an effective nutriceutical for health maintenance. Proflavanol C100 combines grape-seed extract and Vitamin C, both potent anti-oxidants, which promote cardiovascular health, while supporting a balanced immune system, eye-health and healthy skin maintenance. The Vitamin C functions as a carrier of the water-soluble antioxidant and coenzyme vital for the health of tissue throughout the body. Ingredients include grape-seed bioflavonoid and Vitamin C (as calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc ascorbate). Hepasil DTX aids in stimulating liver enzymes and protecting against oxidative stress that hinders this organ’s natural function of protein synthesis, the production of biochemicals that are vital to the digestive process, and the detoxification function. Ingredients include milk-thistle extract (stimulates liver enzymes and protects against oxidative stress), antioxidant properties from green tea extract, olives and tumeric.

~ COMESTIBLES & BEYOND ~

Making a commitment to a healthier lifestyle also involves having an awareness of elements to effect that commitment, including cookbooks, recipes, eco-friendly equipment, and food. Become familiar with what’s available in your particular market. Whether you’re a novice or experienced, cooking the right food, using the right recipes, and equipment can turn your culinary desires into a reality.

Culinary Gear & Gadgetry ~

I’d heard chatter about the merits of The Original Green Pan for sometime now. Some of its most impressive selling features included that the nonstick cookware didn’t contain any of the toxic and harmful chemicals typically found in other nonstick cookware, like PTFE (polytetraflyoroethylene) and PFOA (perfleuoroctoanoic); these chemicals are known to deteriorate when used over time in other nonstick surfaces. The patented coating, Thermalon™, is also environmentally friendly because the manufacturing process results in a reduction of CO2 emissions in the area of 60%; the ceramic coating is a healthier coating and energy efficient; the ceramic coating is over hard anodized aluminum. Other features include a very high threshold for tolerances of very high-sustained heat, without melting, blistering, peeling, warping or scorching (450º C, 850 º F). Conventional nonstick surfaces also emit toxic chemicals into the air when subjected to heat stress; the cooking surface heats up much faster, retaining its high levels of heat; this also leads to scorching and warping, not too mention disintegration of the nonstick surface. I tried a sauté pan from their Rotterdam Professional line. The pan’s weight and balance made for a uniform cooking surface; I required very little added oil (EVOO) to coat the inner surface. Food cooked more quickly because the cooking temperature was retained; cool down of the pan, once removed from the heating surface, was fast. No food stuck to the inner surface, and it cleaned effortlessly. The silicone handle is ribbed for easy gripping and is also removable, but recommended to remain in place, since the silicone sleeve protects the stainless handle, which can get hot if used in the oven or under the broiler. I also noticed my food tasted clean; I wasn’t concerned about any chemicals leeching into my food using this pan, whereas with conventional nonstick surfaces, there was the concern. The company’s core mission is a commitment to health, environment and convenience. Products are available online, at authorized retailers and also on HSN Shopping Network.

Culinary Wizardry ~

Iconic Golden Door Spa’s must-have cookbook for the foodie, especially the spa type, is “The Golden Door Cooks Light & Easy ~ Delicious Recipes from America’s Premier Spa” by Chef Michel Stroot. For over three decades, Chef Stroot has been dazzling the taste buds of this iconic spa’s discerning guest’s palates with creative recipes that can hardly be categorized as deprivation. According to Chef Stroot, “Bringing out the seasonal freshness in ingredients, without using butter and other unnecessary fats, is the cornerstone of my cooking.” This beautifully photographed and illustrated cookbook is packed with how-tos and easy to follow recipes based on readily available ingredients.

InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Joya Spa ~

Executive Chef Christian Pratsch has artfully created extraordinarily healthy and delicious spa food items for the spa’s restaurant, Joya Terrace. Using only the freshest seasonal ingredients culled from abundant local farms and balanced with heart-healthy inspiration, these offerings will please the spa foodie aficionado. Here are a few to try. These recipes are simple, easy to follow and make for a tantalizing presentation as a snack, side or light entrée. They’re also beautiful and nourish the senses. Each recipe yields between four to six servings.

Hummus ~

Ingredients: 1 clove garlic; 1 (19 ounce) can garbanzo beans, half the liquid reserved; 4 tablespoons lemon juice; 2 tablespoons tahini; 1 clove garlic, chopped; 1 teaspoon salt; black pepper to taste; 2 tablespoons olive oil. Directions: In a blender, chop the garlic. Pour garbanzo beans into blender, reserving about a tablespoon for garnish. Place lemon juice, tahini, chopped garlic and salt in blender. Blend until creamy and well mixed. Transfer the mixture to a medium-serving bowl. Sprinkle with pepper and pour olive oil over the top. Garnish with reserved garbanzo beans.

Babaghanoush (Roasted Eggplant Spread) ~

Ingredients: 1 eggplant; 1/4 cup lemon juice; 1/4-cup tahini; 2 tablespoons sesame seeds; 2 cloves garlic, minced; salt and pepper to taste; 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil. Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet. Place eggplant on baking sheet, and make holes in the skin with a fork. Roast it for 30 to 40 minutes, turning occasionally, or until soft. Remove from oven, and place into a large bowl of cold water. Remove from water, and peel skin off. Place eggplant, lemon juice, tahini, sesame seeds, and garlic in an electric blender, and puree. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer eggplant mixture to a medium size-mixing bowl, and slowly mix in olive oil. Chill before serving.

Cucumber Yogurt Sauce (Tzatziki) ~

Ingredients: 3 tbsp. olive oil; 1 tbsp. vinegar; 2 cloves garlic, minced finely; 1/2 tsp. salt; 1/4 tsp. white pepper; 1 cup Greek style yogurt, strained; 1-cup sour cream; 2 cucumbers, peeled, seeded and diced; 1 tsp. chopped fresh dill. Directions: Combine olive oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix until well combined. Using a whisk, blend the yogurt with the sour cream. Add the olive oil mixture to the yogurt mixture and mix well. Finally, add the cucumber and chopped fresh dill. Chill before serving.

Golden Gazpacho ~

Ingredients: 5 medium yellow or orange tomatoes; 1 1/2 cup chopped seeded cucumber; 1/2 cup chopped yellow pepper; 1/4 cup chopped red onion; 1 teaspoon minced garlic clove; 1 teaspoon seeded minced jalapeno; 1-teaspoon extra virgin olive oil; 1/2-teaspoon salt; 1 teaspoon minced garlic clove; 1 tbsp. sherry vinegar. Loading... Directions: Cut up tomatoes and place in a blender with cucumber, yellow pepper, red onion, 1 minced garlic clove, jalapeno, sherry vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, and salt; puree. Chill before serving.

My Notes ~

Serve the Hummus and Eggplant with Lavosh or water crackers. Tahini is sesame seed butter and available in most food markets or specialty import markets. Greek yogurt is a style of yogurt that has been strained of its liquid, making it have a thicker, spreadable consistency. The Cucumber Sauce can be added to the Gazpacho to add another layer of delicious flavor. These dishes are definitely heart-healthy fare.

Energy Bars ~

Wings of Nature bars are certified organic, gluten free, trans fat free and made without refined sugar. I tried the Cranberry Crunch Bar, Almond Raisin Bar and Espresso Coffee Bar. Each one tasted incredibly delicious, and at less than 180 calories, they’re guilt-free, healthy and high-fiber; adding a piece of fresh fruit will make for a healthy low-calorie breakfast or snack. With wholesome ingredients like raisins, sesame seeds, cranberries, peanuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, crisped brown rice, and then sweetened with nature’s finest like Agave syrup, apple juice, and rice syrup these healthy bars have all the right stuff for meal replacement or snack time. The bars are cold-processed, which preserves the purity and freshness of ingredients.

~ A SPARKLING CLEAN HOME ~

Although I was raised as a Catholic, my mother often quoted the ancient Hebrew proverb “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” To this day, I often recall that saying while busying myself doing these cleaning chores. Through consumer demand and improvements in technology and ingredient formulation, a number of green and eco-friendly products are available that take the drudgery out of cleaning, while being kinder and gentler to the environment. These products get things sparkling clean without toxic chemicals that are harmful to one’s health and the environment.

GrabGreen Home ~

Wanting to provide a safe, natural and non-toxic home environment for her two daughters, Patricia Spencer’s passion and journey led her to the founding of MaddieBrit Products. With her passion and knowledge of products, she searched for the right mix of organic chemists and formulators. The result was the creation of GrabGreen Home, a line of safe, eco-friendly, non-toxic home cleaning products that were natural and free of phosphates, chlorine and other harsh, irritating and synthetic additives, including dyes and perfumes. The products I tried included Thyme with Fig Leaf Degreaser Cleaner, Tangerine with Lemongrass Dish Soap, Tangerine Dishwashing Detergent and Vetiver 3-in-1 Laundry Detergent. All of these products were star performers. Both the Degreaser (natural spray bottle) was incredible and not only quickly dissolved built-up grease, but left the surface sparking and renewed. The Dish Soap (liquid) and Dishwashing Detergent (pod) cleaned exceptionally well, cutting through grease without leaving any residue; surface areas were spotless. The Laundry Detergent (pod) was great for heavily soiled or delicate fabrics, leaving them clean, soft and fresh smelling. Each one of the products also had a subtle and fresh scent, were non-irritating and gentle on the hands. Other conventional products I’ve used caused sneezing, irritated my skin and didn’t always clean effectively, but not any of these. These impressively effective products are also ideal for those that are hyper-allergic, and available in scented or unscented formulas.

That’s it for this edition…until the next one…remember to take care of yourself and those around you.

……THE NEXT EDITION…..

…will be my “Spring Bouquet”…full of product reviews that will help shed those winter blahs, and take away the chill of winter's last gasp… the clocks aren’t the only things that change this time of the year…

SUMMARY of Top 10 Wellness Ideas for 100 Vital Years
(For the Ideas Details and the Good Books, please click here.)

Healthy Diet Ideas

1. Eat and Drink Much More Fresh Fruits, Herbs, Spices and Vegetables
All fresh fruits, herbs, spices and vegetables taste good and are good for you. Eat as many and as wide a variety as possible. Fruit, herbs, spices and vegetables are a rich source of amino acids, antioxidants, carotenoids, enzymes, fats, fiber, flavonoids, minerals, oils, pectin, sugars, trace elements, vitamins, water and phyto-chemicals with anti-bacterial, anti-aging, anti-allergenic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, anti-tumor, anti-viral, blood thinning, detoxifying, memory and vision enhancement, immune-stimulating, tonic, wound healing and vasoprotective properties, amongst others - promoting healthy cellular metabolism and growth, as well as the efficient detoxification and elimination of metabolic toxins.

Eating fresh fruits, herbs, spices and vegetables in juice form, sometimes referred to as "juice therapy", meaning "the use of concentrated nutritional elixirs made from fresh fruits, herbs, spices and vegetables for nutritional maintenance, illness prevention, body detoxification and the treatment of ailments and diseases", is very beneficial in promoting a long life of joy and vitality.

Every fresh fruit, herb, spice and vegetable offers one or more positive effects on promoting a long life of joy and vitality, including preventing or minimizing risks associated with: Alzheimer’s, arthritis, asthma, blood pressure, blood sugar, cancer, cardiovascular disease, cholesterol, constipation, diabetes, glaucoma, heart attack, obesity, osteoporosis, over-weight, Parkinson’s, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke and urinary tract infections, amongst others.

2. Eat Like the Animals and the Birds

Many animals and birds eat in harmony with "trophology", the science of combining compatible foods to ensure optimal digestion leading to optimal health and a long life of joy and vitality. The key principles of trophology are:
· Consume only one type of food during any meal, such as carbohydrate or protein.
· Eat animal proteins, with plenty of non-starch vegetables, preferably raw such as in a salad, once a day.
· Eat starches, with vegetables, preferably raw, as in a salad, and/or with non-acid fruits, once a day.
· Eat fats with carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and light plant proteins, not with concentrated animal proteins. Do NOT eat margarine, other butter substitutes, or hydrogenated oils.
· Eat at least one large fresh salad of raw non-starch vegetables every day, ideally just before a protein or carbohydrate meal.
· Eat fresh fruits, nuts and seeds on an empty stomach.

3. Forget Food-Like Substances
There are many "food-like substances" that must be avoided if you want to pursue a long life of joy and vitality. The worst food-like substances are artificial sweeteners, margarine, processed foods and sugar. Other food-like substances best avoided are pasteurized and/or homogenized milk, salty foods, soft drinks and white wheat-flour.

Moving and Resting Ideas
4. Move Your Body

For a long life of joy and vitality it is very important to move your body on a regular basis, preferably every day, for at least a moderate amount of time, in a way that you like doing, such as gently exercise, light sport, martial arts, playing, swimming, walking, yoga, etc. Natural movement of the body, ideally to a rhythm, is the foundation to cultivating a long life of joy and vitality.

The best forms of body movement are slow and rhythmic, which will loosen, stretch and relax your body, to collect and store energy, to leave you feeling refreshed. This type of movement is aerobic, beneficial to the particular body part being moved, as well as to the cardiovascular system and all other body systems.

Be sure to warm up before doing a movement or exercise regime, especially to relax a stressed or tired body and to stimulate blood and energy circulation. Loosening movements should be focused on the joints, with stretching movements should be focused on the ligaments, muscles and tendons.

It is now recognized that regular movement of the body offers diverse and significant benefits, including positive effects on: addiction, aging, anxiety, attention, attraction to the opposite sex, blood pressure, blood, bones, brain, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, confidence, constipation, dementia, depression, diabetes, emotions, energy levels, erectile dysfunction, euphoria, fun, heart, immunity, infections, injury pain, learning, longevity, motivation, muscles, obesity, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, physical function, prostate, self esteem, sex, skin, sleep, stress, strokes, weight.

5. Rest Your Mind

Meditating for just ten minutes a day makes a positive difference to one’s wellbeing and the pursuit of a long life of joy and vitality. Meditation can mean many things, however fundamentally it involves stilling the movement of the mind and bringing it to a state of undisturbed silence.

People approach meditation for many reasons, some to reduce stress and others to heal themselves physically and mentally. Some people just want to calm the mind and reflect. Meditation can effectively do all of these things, and much more. A review of the literature identifies 101 benefits of meditation, including physiological, psychological and spiritual benefits.

Meditation is also one of the ways of knowing the most important person in your life. Yourself! Not through others opinions, or through reading self-help books, but through sitting quietly, tuning into your breath, and going into that vast world inside yourself. When the thought waves are under control, the mind becomes quiet and we then experience our higher state of consciousness.

Healthy Lifestyle Ideas
6. Enjoy a Red, or a Blond!

Red wine contains resveratrol, a polyphenol also found in cranberries and blueberries, which is a powerful antioxidant and which reduces the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as having anti-aging properties. White wine also contains resveratrol, however in smaller amounts than red wine.

The optimal consumption of red wine has indicated a reduction in the risk of heart attack in middle age people by 30% to 50% and the optimal consumption of red wine is one glass per day for women and two glasses per day for men.

Recent research indicates there appears to be a direct link between the incidence of drinking alcohol and breast cancer in women however, if a woman consumes sufficient amounts of folic acid (Vitamin B9), the risk of breast cancer reduces and even disappears.

7. Sleep to Learn
Despite all the research, we still do not know exactly why we sleep and how much sleep we need. We do know the optimum amount of sleep varies from one person to the next, and for each person it varies over time. We know almost everyone experiences a period of sleepiness during each afternoon, and that if a person has too little sleep or too much sleep, they become dysfunctional. It seems the primary reason for sleep has a lot to do with learning, and the optimal amount of sleep for most people is between six and eight hours.

By simple trial you can determine the optimum amount of sleep you need at any time of your life, and once determined, maintaining this optimum, including having an afternoon nap, creates many benefits on the journey to a long life of joy and vitality, including significantly improving attention, dexterity, digestion, emotion, glucose metabolism, learning, memory, reasoning, recall and thinking.

8. Squat to Poo
The best way to defecate, otherwise known as “having a poo”, is the same way as all animals and many people living in Africa, Asia and the Middle East do, by squatting, the natural way.

When sitting instead of squatting, the end of the descending colon is bent and moderate to significant muscular effort is required to poo. Over time, this strain can cause bleeding piles, constipation and hemorrhoids.

In the squatting position, the colon is in alignment with the rectum and the anus and the cheeks are spread, allowing the anus to open easily and fully, enabling effortless evacuation. The squatting position requires no strain, more poo is passed each time, more quickly, compared with sitting, and one of the final processes of detoxification is optimized.

The easiest way to move into a squat-like position on a sit-down toilet is to sit on the toilet seat and raise your feet onto the front of the toilet seat and as far back towards your buttocks as possible, preferably without shoes on, so that your heels are close to your buttocks and your knees are against your chest. You can either stay in this half-sit/half-squat position, or else lift your buttocks up off the toilet seat, into a full squat position.

Please try squatting, or at least half-squatting - you, and your bowels will love it – like me and mine! However, please be careful not to fall off the toilet!

9. Detox for Love
The key reasons why people must detoxify their body, not only through attending a regular detoxification retreat, but also preferably as a daily lifestyle activity, is to quite simply enjoy a long life of joy and vitality, to experience health is the prerequisite for wealth and happiness.

In today’s world, most people need to work actively on detoxifying their body, because:
· Regular multiple-exposures to environmental toxins, for the air, building materials, cosmetic and personal care products and water, amongst others, reduce the normal metabolic functioning and inherent self-healing capability of the body.
· So called "modern lifestyles", characterized by poor nutrition, deficient exercise and chronic stress, pollute the body with chemical and emotional toxins, which cannot be neutralized due to a lack of necessary nutrients in the optimal proportions.

Whilst toxicity is expressed by a variety of symptoms, the most common indicators of toxicity are: abnormal pregnancy outcomes, acne, allergic reactions, anxiety, artherosclerosis, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation, depression, dermatitis, eczema, fatigue, female infertility, headaches, immune system impairment, indigestion, inflammation, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, joint and muscle stiffness and pain, kidney dysfunction, learning disorders, male infertility, memory loss, migraines, multiple chemical sensitivity, obesity, over-weight, Parkinson’s disease, psoriasis, skin puffiness, sleeplessness, susceptibility to cold, flu, infection, injury and tiredness.

By regularly detoxifying your body, as a daily lifestyle activity, as well as by attending regular intensive detoxification retreats, it is possible to remove many of the toxins that cause dis-ease, disease and the inability to enjoy life to its fullest.

Regular detoxification enables the restoration and maintenance of every-day good health, characterized by joy, love, vitality and longevity.

Healthy Relationships Ideas
10. Find Your Spirit

Find a kindred-spirit significant-other, love him or her, every day, for all days. Love family. Nurture good friendships. Forgive. Smile. Socialize. Be curious. Use your imagination. Have zeal, for something. Relax, let go.

Find your inner spirit…
Take the time to play, for it is the secret of perpetual youth…
Take the time to read, for it is the fountain of wisdom…
Take the time to be friendly, for it is the road to happiness…
Take the time to love and be loved, for it is the nourishment of the soul…
Take the time to share, for it is too short a life to be selfish…
Take the time to laugh, for it is the music of the heart…
Take the time to dream, for it is hitching your wagon to a star…
Sing, write, dance, photograph, whistle…
Do whatever brings calm to your mind, relaxation to your body, and joy to your heart.

Live all of life with loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, to nourish, preserve and restore your-self, as well as animals, people, plants, and the one earth we call home.

~ PRODUCT REVIEWS ~
Cali Cosmetics
~ Cali Cosmetics offers a few organic winter treats like Oliva Green Occhi Eye Cream, Oliva Green Corpo Body Emulsion and Oliva Green Bagno Bathing Gel. I only received small sample sizes of the Body Emulsion and Bathing Gel and didn’t have sufficient product to try over a several week period to accurately assess the long-term efficacy for each product; however, the lotion sample was quickly absorbed, was non-greasy, but the hydration level didn’t last very long; the bath gel lathered and rinsed well without leaving the skin overly dry; both products had a pleasant aroma. The eye cream was gentle, non-irritating, non-greasy and quickly absorbed; I didn’t notice any of my fine lines diminished. For more information, visit http://www.calicosmetics.com/

[ comfort zone ] sacred nature ~ [ comfort zone ] sacred nature is this brand’s entry in the crowded organics field. All packaging is 100% recycled material and printed with water-based colors. Renewable energy sources are used during production, and Ecocert, the European certification standard, certifies that the natural and organic cosmetics are sourced, manufactured and formulated according to their established standards of measurement. This certified organic line’s formulations are rich in anti-oxidant and skin cellular regeneration and protection. I love the fact that no matter what skin type a person, this line is highly effective. All products I tried were extremely gentle, non-irritating, non-greasy, quickly absorbed, and had favorable aromatherapeutic properties. I also enjoyed how the texture of my skin improved; fine lines appeared diminished; skin tone was more even, and the texture smoother. I also enjoyed how my face looked brighter after applying either the day or night creams. The improvements were cumulative and didn’t diminish over time.

Active certified organic ingredients include buriti oil, a Brazilian nut tree prized for its healing and moisturizing qualities, and anti-oxidant protection; shea butter, also a prized derivative of a nut that further protects the DNA structure; butterfly bush extract, with properties that nourish and improve skin’s elasticity; and, distilled orange water, with its re-mineralizing properties. Skincare products tried included the bio-certified milk, bio-certified day cream, bio-certified night cream, and bio-certified hydrating fluid. Products tried for the body included bio-certified gommage, and bio-certified oil. For more information, visit http://www.comfortzone.it/en/products/sacred_nature

Dentisse ~ In my Spa Bits Volume 2010.6, published November 9, 2010, I reviewed Dentisse Natural Reflection Toothpaste, a natural oral care product by this brand. In this edition, I’m reviewing the Dentisse Natural Solution Alcohol-Free Oral Rinse. Like the Toothpaste, the Oral Rinse delivers amazing results and uses natural ingredients. The Oral Rinse is alcohol-free, and contains gentle and natural ingredients like baking soda, xylitol (inhibits bacteria that causes bad breath), aloe vera, vegetable glycerin, and essential oils of clove, eucalyptus, tea tree, menthol, peppermint and wintergreen. After my routine of flossing, brushing and rinsing, a few swishes of this power-packed mouthwash not only left my breath feeling fresh and minty, but my mouth felt healthy and hydrated, and my teeth glistened. Dentisse Natural Solution Alcohol-Free Oral Rinse is a must-have product to complete one’s oral hygiene accoutrement, along with an effective toothbrush, dental floss and Dentisse Natural Reflection Toothpaste. Dr. H. Bellin Swiss Skin Care ~ Working with a team of scientists, highly regarded and respected board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Howard Bellin has applied his four decades of passion and expertise in helping others to realize healthy and rejuvenated skin has formulated three exceptional products that combat aging and improve cell regeneration. The cosmeceutical products include Scar & Stretch Mark Body Cream, All in One Eye Cream and All in One Face Cream. The Scar & Stretch Mark Body Cream is formulated with ingredients that include pure Swiss Edelweiss, peptides, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, shea butter and vitamins B and E. Applying twice daily, over time, the affected areas are noticeably smoother and healthier in appearance; skin becomes suppler and scarring appears reduced in overall size. The product’s consistency is silky, non-greasy, quickly absorbed, with a neutral aroma. The areas I applied the product too definitely improved in texture and was noticeably smoother. Both the All in One Eye Cream and All in One Face Cream also contain pure Swiss Edelweiss, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. The product’s consistency was silky, non-greasy, quickly absorbed and had a neutral aroma. Although there was a slight tingling sensation after I applied the Face Cream, it quickly dissipated. The Eye Cream irritated my eyes and I ended up removing the product. I did enjoy the Face Cream, however. My skin appeared brighter with a smoother texture. IROHA Nature
~ If you love the positive after-effects that an intense mask treatment gives, but not the mess and inconvenience, then consider IROHA Nature Anti-Aging Tissue Facial Masks and Hydra-Gel Eye Patches. The Facial Masks are paraben-free and contain moisturizing hyaluronic acid along with other formulated ingredients that target specific results; other ingredients include collagen, seaweed, vitamins, essential oils, herbs, soy, Q10, olive oil, green tea, ginseng and witch hazel. Each targeted formulation is infused in a pre-cut tissue face form that is easily applied to a clean and dry face. Facial Masks are individually sealed in single packets, which eliminate any concerns of contamination, evaporation or ingredient degradation. Once the masks are removed and discarded, any formulation residue can be gently massaged into the facial area. I tried the Anti-Aging, Rejuvenating & Brightening Face Mask, which contained caviar (proteins and vitamins) and arbutin (skin brightening). The Hydra-Gel Patches are also pre-formed and infused with ingredients that moisturize, lift and reduce puffiness. Both the Anti-Aging Face Mask and Patches were gentle and non-irritating. I especially noticed that fine lines were visibly diminished and the overall skin felt hydrated and smooth. Other facemask formulations target sun/age spots, firming, wrinkles/firming, revitalizing/purifying, and nourishing/comforting. For more information, visit http://www.irohamasks.com/

jane iredale The Skincare Makeup ~ Winter’s extremes mute light’s brightness, while literally sucking the healthy vibrancy of color from my fair skin. I’m fair skinned verging on pale! The best antidote for this is to use color to enhance, brighten and to bring out the glow, without looking intense or superficial. My choice remains products from eponymous jane iredale The Skincare Makeup. This line never fails to deliver, remaining true to its inception of offering the most natural and purest mineral-based products that are natural, free of paraben and phthalates, sun safe, and great for all skin types and colors. The latest mix of outstanding new products includes Eye Steppes, Mystikols, and Tantasia. The Eye Steppes come in a gorgeous multi-level compact with mirror and coordinated colors geared for blue, green or brown/hazel colored eyes: goBlue ~ Oyster, Rosy, Taupe, Swiss Chocolate and Smoke; goGreen ~ Allure, Iris, Sepia, Slate and Grape; goBrown ~ Sea Green, Blue Sky, Tan, Forest and Licorice. Each top-level color is ideal as an all-over eyelid base; all colors can be mixed/blended to create an individualized signature look. Three step levels on a swivel hinged mirrored compact, containing five gorgeous hypoallergenic and natural mineral color eyeshadows that you can take from neutral to glam.

Mystikols are another brilliant addition to this fabulous line and are ideal worn alone, or used to accentuate color preferences from the Eye Steppes collections. Individual Mystikols come in five gorgeous colors, like Malachite, Amethyst, Dark Topaz, Lapis Lazuli and Onyx. Make it exotic; make it dramatic. Line it, smudge it, and define it. The dual tip pencil applicator has the creamy color in one end and the applicator tip on the other end. Both the Eye Steppes and Mystikols are long-wearing, crease proof, hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested.

Tantasia is the first-ever self-tanning product to intelligently know what your skin wants in terms of color, adjusting to levels that intensify with repeated application; a person can take it as faint or as dark as its normal skin pigmentation will accommodate. For me, I have fair skin and can never get a deep, dark bronze color. My pigmentation gets to one level and that’s it. A deep, dark bronze would look rather ridiculous on my fair skin. The product applies easily, is non-streaking and doesn’t have an unpleasant aroma, nor does it leave an orange cast to the skin; it’s very natural, and the pleasant aroma is reminiscent of fresh cut oranges and reminds me of the warmth of the summer’s sun. Some of the ingredients include acetyl tyrosine (an amino acid) and Monk’s Pepper (an extract), which helps to synthesize and mimic the skin’s natural tanning process through melanin production; there’s also copper gluconate, which is part of the tanning process delivery system; there’s another vegetable amino acid, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which helps even-out variances in color. Winter’s definitely an ideal time to use this outstanding product, mimic sun-kissed skin and thumb one’s proverbial nose at the season’s challenges. For more information and to check out their informative how-to guides, visit http://janeiredale.com/

Sensé - Beautiful Science ~ I tried the Sensé Hydrating Toner and found it to be gentle, non-irritating and non-drying; it had a gel-like consistency and a pleasant aroma; I enjoyed this product. The Sensé Daytime Protective Emulsion was non-greasy, but difficult to apply. Rather than gliding on easily and smoothly, the product dragged on my skin. Once I managed to apply the product, taking care not to pull/tug my skin too much, the product was quickly absorbed and left no residue. However, the hydration properties didn’t last long and my skin felt dry to the touch within an hour after applying the product; perhaps that was due to the dryness of winter air, which definitely impedes hydration and retention. KOHLER WATERS SPA ~ BETTER THAN EVER

~ in moments of stress, changing one’s surroundings is a great cure for this ailment ~

When I need to get-a-way to a luxury spa close to home, Kohler Waters Spa (Kohler, WI) is my preferred destination. The first time I went to experience the spa was in 1995. At that time, it seemed to be an after-thought to this iconic AAA Five Diamond American Club Resort. It was tucked away in its mega fitness center, The Sport’s Core. Suffice it to say, if one blinked, they wouldn’t have even noticed it existed. Fortunately, much has happened since that first experience.

Kohler, WI is home to the factory of the eponymous brand of all-things water. Kohler fixtures and equipment are the definitive water design element for home, business and spa. With its rich history in legal immigration and American ingenuity, the Kohler brand would define the town with its exquisite and practical designs; the brands also include Baker and McGuire furniture and Ann Sacks ceramic tiles. Kohler’s name also defines the location for the multi-award winning resort, which used to be the factory’s housing quarters for sponsored legal immigrant workers. Its name would also define the multi-award winning Spa, and its affinity to all things water. Clearly, Kohler has become a single word that defines and is synonymous with the luxury brand and experience. It is aptly referred to as Destination Kohler.

In 2000, Kohler Waters Spa was finally given its due, and relocated to its permanent location, the Carriage House, which is considered an annex to the main resort, The American Club. The Carriage House has 55 guest rooms, ten of which are their Immersion Suites. Guests can literally stay in their comfy robe and slippers all day and go from room to Spa without any curious looks. The Spa is comprised of nearly 25,000 square feet and occupies over two floors of the Carriage House.

Reception, retail, multi-purpose room, waiting areas and the salon are on the first level. The lower level is comprised of its magnificent water feature (a thirty-foot relaxation pool and eight foot cascading waterfall), additional waiting areas, and gender-specific Respite Rooms (lockers, whirlpool, cold plunge, steam and sauna). There are twenty-one treatment rooms. There’s also a glass enclosed rooftop deck complete with a huge whirlpool, and outdoor patio. The deck and patio were part of the Spa’s 2005 major expansion and remains a very popular event space, especially for bridal parties and girl’s getaways.

The Carriage House is an historic multi-story structure that once housed the pharmacy for the Kohler Company factory workers. It’s somewhat ironic that the place where ill factory workers once sought healing for whatever ailed them continues healing those who seek the space for restoration and relaxation.

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, and with several expansions and renovations later, a recent trek to Kohler Waters Spa reaffirmed for me that the nearly four-hour drive from my home was well worth the journey. This Spa remains a preferred luxury destination for both the spa aficionado and spa novice.

Kohler Waters Spa has continually stepped up its game by offering innovative water-based treatment therapies that conform to its wellness platform. The Spa made a significant expansion in 2005 to additional space (roof-top pool and open-air patio), existing space (women’s respite room), additional treatment rooms and the addition of ten immersion suites in the accommodation area of the Carriage House. This past July, another major expansion and enhancement program included the introduction of unique signature treatment rooms (Harmony, Acoustic, Riverbath and Stillness) and expanded treatment therapies (Lavender Rain), and a new and proprietary technology VibraAcoustic. This technology includes underwater music’s rhythmic vibrations that enhance the treatment experience.

The Harmony Room is a hydrotherapy treatment room where a steady stream of water flows in a steady downward stream from the ceiling and into the tub. The Acoustic Room is equipped for the VibraAcoustic Bath. Both rooms feature the innovative Kohler Vichy Shower with hydromassage features. The Riverbath Room offers a whirlpool where eight colors are synchronized with changing water flow movements, to simulate currents of a river; the guest has total control of the color synchronization and ebb and flow of the water. In this room is also the Kohler Ambient Rain shower with chromatherapy and a Flipside Handshower to maximize the shower experience. Kohler leads the way in its hi-tech mastery in water research and developments, innovation and uniquely healing and therapeutic equipment applied to their Spa experience. There’s also a Stillness Room, which allows couples an opportunity to further decompress, post-treatment, and experience additional therapies.

In addition to these treatment rooms, new water treatments added to the menu include the Riverbath, Acoustic Bath, Lavender Rain, Stretch & Flex and Sinus Massage. New facial treatments added include the Antioxidant Facial and Acu-Lift Facial.

According to Jean Kolb, Director of Wellness, “We designed these rooms and new signature treatments to further enhance the health and relaxation benefits for which Kohler Waters Spa has long been known. Our goal is to provide guests with the latest in spa therapy while continuing the traditions that have made the Kohler Waters Spa one of the best in the country.”

For my treatment therapies, I enjoyed the Riverbath with Massage (Karen, Massage Therapist) and the Lavender Rain (Melanie, Spa Technician).

After a rest by the Spa’s gorgeous Waterfall, I’m led to the Riverbath Room for my Riverbath with Massage treatment. The treatment began with a full-body dry brushing to prep the skin to receive the benefits of a replenishing mineral bath in a spacious whirlpool. Upon entering the spacious whirlpool, I have full access to the control panel that adjusts the flow of water, which simulates river currents, as well as adjusts the sequence of the chromatherapy colors. Between the gentle flow of simulated river currents and the synchronized colors that correspond to the Chakras, I am relieved of body tension and calmed from any internal dysfunction. A deeply relaxing and tension-relieving full-body massage follows and culminates with a wonderfully hydrating full-body moisturizer. This treatment therapy lasted seventy-five minutes.

After this treatment, I took a slight break to enjoy a light lunch, which included a lovely Kohler Waters Spa Salad (grilled chicken breast with organic vegetables and roasted garlic vinaigrette) and a super-anti-oxidant Pomegranate & Raspberry Smoothie, which I savored throughout the afternoon and on my drive home.

After my light lunch break, I led to the Acoustic Room for my Lavender Rain treatment. This treatment combines the best of a full-body exfoliation, infused with eucalyptus and lavender, and a thorough rinsing using the new proprietary Kohler Vichy shower with hydromassage; following this is a lavender-infused body wrap, foot and scalp massage, and a full-body application of moisturizer. My skin was stimulated and revitalized, and the texture felt like silk; my olfactory was also stimulated and revitalized; the body wrap and extremity massages greatly eased my tension, which helped to relax me. It was the perfect combination of treatment plus aromatherapy. This treatment therapy was an indulgent fifty minutes.

In addition to offering it comprehensive treatment menu of water therapies, face, body and salon-related treatments, the Spa regularly offers Yoga, meditative walking, relaxation technique classes, hair and makeup stylists and how-to classes, and retreats. Some of the Spa’s featured treatment product lines include Kerstin Florian, Red Flower and Skin Authority; the Spa also offers its signature-scented products, Hollyhock, which is indigenous to the area and has a lovely floral scent. The retail section is packed with must-have at-home spa treats, including Yoga gear, meditation and inspirational reading material and music CDs.

~ Kohler Waters Spa Etcetera ~

In addition to the American Club Resort and Kohler Waters Spa in WI, there’s an equally impressive spa in the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St. Andrews, Scotland, which opened in 2004. Equally impressive is the Kohler Waters Spa in the tony Chicago suburb, Burr Ridge, which opened in 2008; this location marks the first time Kohler has had a freestanding day spa. The new day spa is contingent to one of their brand new Design Centers.

To read more about the new Burr Ridge location, this digital magazine's September 7, 2009 edition, “Spa Treatments and Product Experiences-Part III”, presents an in-depth look at this exceptional location. For an additional read, my cover feature review of the WI Spa location can be found online in the “Spa Destinations” section of Spa Management Magazine.

Kohler Waters Spa is a day or multi-day experience, but it’s always a place where one can go to for what I categorize as the four important components of Spa Rx ~ rest, relaxation, revitalization and rejuvenation. Kohler Waters Spa is accessible by car, train or air (Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport or Chicago O’Hare International Airport).

OF THINGS ESTHETIC & AROMATIC

Bond NYC No. 9 ~ Cooper Square is one of those NYC moments that gets right in your face with its bold and brash unisex appeal. Named after a nineteenth-century über New Yorker, Peter Cooper, the geographic area is where eclectic East Village, NoHo (North of Houston Street), and the equally über-downtown area, aka the Bowery, converge and merge. This isn’t a fragrance for the faint at heart, of which I tend to be. It’s woody spices, peppered lightly with fruit and floral, dries down to a potent and dark and brooding XY imprint. This fragrance is definitely not for the faint of heart or those with an already centered and self-assured persona who don’t need a fragrance to be second fiddle to determination and confidence. For more information, visit http://www.bondno9.com/
Dentisse Natural Reflection Toothpaste ~ This natural oral care product gently cleaned my teeth, while leaving a luminosity to the enamel. It also left my mouth fresh tasting and moist. Key ingredients, which gently and naturally provide cleansing and protection, include refined kaolin clay, bentonite clay, and natural peppermint oil. Although I didn’t have much product to test, in time, the product is said to reduce tartar and plaque build-up and stain removal while brightening the enamel. The luxury toothpaste is formulated with and without fluoride; a mouth rinse and lip balm is also available. For more information, visit http://www.dentisse.com/
LaLicious ~ For those that can’t get enough of sweet-smelling fruits, nuts and extracts, this is definitely a line for you. I tried three different Body Butters, that included Vanilla, Tahitian Flower, and Coconut Cream. Products were non-greasy, quickly absorbed and left skin very hydrated; the consistency was very dense. My favorite was the Tahitian Flower; least favorite was the Vanilla, since its aroma lasted well into the hours, even after numerous washings. Ingredients included shea butter, safflower seed oil, glycerin, aloe leaf extract, apricot kernel oil, and vitamin E. I also tried three different Sugar Soufflé Scrubs in Brown Sugar & Vanilla, Coconut Cream, and Coffee Bean. My favorite was the Coffee Bean and least favorite the Brown Sugar & Vanilla. Products gently exfoliated and were very hydrating; consistency wasn’t greasy. Ingredients included cane sugar, coconut and sweet almond oil, vitamin E, soybean oil; honey was in the Brown Sugar & Vanilla variety, and 100% Arabica coffee grounds in the Coffee Bean variety. Using both the gentle, yet effective scrubs, followed by the body lotion did improve the overall skin texture and hydration levels. For more information, visit http://www.lalicious.com
Orlane Paris ~ This iconic brand’s latest innovation to stave off early signs of aging, while inhibiting and restoring, is Anagenèse 25+ Morning Recovery Concentrate First Time Fighting Serum. Some of the pro-growth ingredients include collagen rich bio-marine derivatives, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A and E, and ginseng. The Serum is luxurious and silky, but once applied, it enhances the skin’s luminosity, while evening out texture and tone. This is a remarkable product alone, or as a base for moisturizer and I actually looked forward to using it each morning because of the porcelain luminosity to my skin, while leaving it revitalized. This product is one in a series of three, which targets anti-aging. At any age, it’s an outstanding product. For more information, visit http://www.orlane.com/
Thalgo la Beauté Marine ~ This natural skincare line is based in miner-rich algae and other restorative plant derivatives. I tried a travel kit that included Pure Velvet Cleansing Cream, Super Lift Tonic Water, Thalgogive Firming Gel Mask, and Wrinkle Control Smoothing Cream. All products were gentle, non-greasy and had a rich, silky texture. I enjoyed how the Cleansing Cream was easily rinsed off and didn’t leave the skin feel taut or dry. The Tonic Water was refreshing and the Smoothing Cream absorbed quickly, while maintaining hydration levels. Although I used the products for about four weeks, the Smoothing Cream didn’t appear to diminish some of my fine lines as much as I had anticipated. The subtle fresh aromas expanded the enjoyment of using the products. I especially enjoyed the Gel Mask, which was cooling and left my skin energized with a smooth, even texture. All products are also free of parabens, mineral oil, propylene glycol and GMOs. I enjoyed using this handy travel kit during some of my recent treks. I tried the Lavender Buds, which included avocado oil, raw honey, oatmeal, chamomile, lavender buds and essential oils of lavender and chamomile; wonderful addition of organic colloidal oatmeal for exfoliation is gentle, without irritating delicate skin. Each soap has a reflective saying printed on the handcrafted wrapper. The bar I tried lathered and rinsed well without drying; the beautiful lavender aroma was very subtle and calming. Using it was definitely an ideal cleansing option to close out a hectic day. For more information, visit http://www.wholetruthsolutions.com

Gibson’s Steakhouse (Chicago-area) ~ At first glance, this might appear to be a non sequitur, but it’s not. I had the recent pleasure of lunching at the Oak Brook, IL newest location of this national quintessential steak and chop restaurant. My test was to find something heart-healthy on the menu and I succeeded by selecting a deliciously prepared grilled Organic North Atlantic Irish Salmon served with delicate seasonal vegetable sides. The wine selection includes a lovely Organic Cabernet by Bonterra. Other green-sustainable efforts include Gibson’s Beef Program; participating cattle ranchers are also farmers, growing their own food for the cattle (the farmers also recycle the waste in the form of methane and fertilizer and also sell it to others; this allows for a better controlled by-product that is more environmentally-friendly). Other green efforts include using takeout containers made from biodegradable recycled paper materials, and using recycled paper towels in their Kitchens and Restrooms. A commitment to using locally grown produce to reduce CO2 emissions is another green effort. Lastly, the restaurant chain also recognizes that more and more diners prefer heart-healthy menu selections, including organic-based and locally grown items. To this end, Gibson’s is committed to adapting their menus to accommodate those palate preferences. Diners can easily find heart-healthy and organic menu selections offered at any of the nationwide restaurant locations. For more information, visit http://www.gibsonssteakhouse.com/
Kama Indian Bistro (Chicago-area) ~ Located in LaGrange, a suburb of Chicago, this fairly new restaurant is a unique dining experience for the area’s many varied cultural eating establishments. Although limited in size, the restaurant serves traditional Indian cuisine, as well as alcohol; something many such establishments leave off their menus. What is very appealing about Kama Indian Bistro is that it will adapt any of its menu offerings for those with a gluten-intolerance, or who are vegan or vegetarian. Portions are ample and range from mildly spicy to fire breathing. I chose mildly spicy. I enjoyed many unique flavor combinations that included cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, and cilantro. My selections were mostly vegetarian; I did indulge in some perfectly seasoned Tandoori lamb, which was delicious. I also enjoyed the Saaq (Spinach Masala) and Eggplant Bharta (a vegetable-like stew). Nourishing, healthy, fresh and very light make this type of dining highly recommended if you’re searching for an introduction to a healthier cuisine. All dishes were prepared from scratch and I imagined the chef frantically preparing dishes, as the seated reservations, plus the brisk takeout business kept time to the rhythm of the regional world music that helped to dim the loud chatter from the diners. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and easily transported me to another distant land. Spike Seasoning ~ I first learned of Dr. Gayelord Hauser, an acclaimed nutritionist and credited with being the “founder of the natural food industry”, in the 1970s. His passion was the correlation between good nutrition and gourmet taste, while using natural foods seasoned with herbs that were full of vitamins, minerals and healthy good taste; he never was a proponent of additives, preservatives or fillers. Taste had always been a fundamental when it came to something being healthy, but didn’t need to taste like medicine. Hauser made in roads in his quest for healthy and flavorful products since 1925. For seven decades he took on the food industry in his passion for natural foods as a means of health. His motivation was finding a way to extend his life after being diagnosed with cancer. He achieved this goal and continued promoting his “wonder foods” for healthy living. These foods included yogurt, black strap molasses, powdered milk, brewer’s yeast and wheat germ. He is also credited with devising a seven-day natural cleanse and detox diet for the body. Dr. Hauser founded Modern Products in 1925, which included healthy seasonings and flavorings formulated. A number of the original products like Swiss Kriss (an herbal laxative and natural facial beauty aid), Spike Vege-Sal Magic and Spike Original Magic, and Spike Vegit Magic are still available and formulated as were the original products. I tried a variety of the Spike seasonings and was amazed at the versatility with each product. No matter what food I seasoned with these products, vegetables, fish or poultry, the tastes were always enhanced and vibrant. I also found the addition of the seasonings to yogurt, made for a flavorful dip for crudités. Another use was to lightly oil whole wheat tortillas or pita breads, and sprinkle with any of the seasoning varieties and then toast them in the over; quick, easy and healthy snacks; dipped in seasoned yogurt, made for an ideal healthy snack food. And because they’re formulated using pure ingredients, the flavors are intense, and a little goes a long way. Products are gluten-free, with many newer varieties and adapted original varieties available in salt-free versions, and because there are no preservatives, additives or fillers, the taste of each product was “clean” and fresh. Lastly, I love the web link because it provides background detail on this remarkable man. It also provides beauty and detox advice and recipes. BEAUTY HISTORY

"The Maybelline Story" ~ Over the years, I’ve read biographies and autobiographies of many different industry types, including the likes of Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden, Coco Chanel, Estee Lauder and Mary Kay Ash. I love a good story about creativity and its process, making it work, succeeding, failing and then succeeding again. When it came to Maybelline, I remember well how super beautiful I felt as a teen using the black cake mascara, with the tiny brush I’d wet with spittle (lucky never to have gotten an infection). I’d delicately apply the beauty treasure to my puny light lashes, all the time hoping for drop dead gorgeous lashes, clumps and all. I treasured that little red plastic container with gold lettering and no mirror. I’d later treasure the eyebrow pencil in the red tube with gold lettering, although I didn’t need to accentuate my eyebrows. I’d sneak wearing this “war paint”, as my dad would call it, and cringe at my mom telling me I was too young for makeup. That was the early-sixties. I remembered the iconic brush mascara in the pink tube with the granny smith apple green top towards the middle-sixties; I went between black, brown, and brown-black, trying to find an identifying color to again make my lashes lush; it was still a beauty treasure. Anyway, reading this book was nostalgic for me. Overall, however, I found the book to be long on family dysfunction and short on the creative process, business adversity and its ultimate success. True, many families are fraught with dysfunction and maybe because of or in spite of this, they become successful. While I did learn a bit more about the storied brand, the retelling of the family history of dark secrets unfortunately led to tragic consequences and outcomes. The brand continues to be a legend and a mainstay in many cosmetic bags and bureau tops. For more information, visit http://www.bettieyoungsbooks.com, or http://www.amazon.com
