LUXE AT HOME

lux - u - ry  (luhg-zhuh-ree)  noun  [from Latin, luxus and its derivative luxuria, excess, indulgence “Luxury” signifies far more than the mere enjoyment of expensive things --it implies an excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures…”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Fashion icon Coco Chanel often mused about the meaning of luxury…some of her musings dictated that “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury”… and that “Luxury is a necessity where necessity ends.”  For me, however, luxury is something that elevates my senses with extraordinary feelings that totally depart from the norm.  Luxury also transports me to a different space and momentarily, I’m removed from my day-to-day routine.  That departure refocuses my energies and thought process, and I’m able to reclaim myself by the sensory-driven diversion.

For skincare, body care and related products, luxury is also how the product feels to the touch, and includes its aroma; how it transforms my skin’s texture after using it; how it improves the overall level of hydration and maintains that level throughout the day; and, how it enhances how I feel after using it.  All of these attributes are sensory-driven and part of that experience.  My recent article, “SPA AT HOME”, also highlighted the sensory-driven aspect as a viable component to an experience.

Following are some of those products I had the pleasure of trying, which qualify as luxurious based on my definition.  During the course of using them, however, what was lacking were the hands of a highly skilled and experienced massage therapist, esthetician or cosmetologist as part of a spa treatment utilizing these various products as part of the treatment; but, I digress.  Enjoy my takes on these products, and don’t forget to take some time for yourself, whether that’s at home or at a spa.

~ FACE & BODY ~

Darphin Paris ~ Vitalskin Anti-Fatigue Dynamizing Serum and Vitalskin Replumping Energic Emulsion*
I loved each product’s texture and how it felt to the touch…rich, silky and luxurious.  Application was smooth and without any drag; products absorbed quickly and left a firmer and more hydrated texture.  Skin looked healthier, toned and more vibrant; my hydration levels were maintained throughout the day.  The texture of myskin was also evened out and no dry patches were felt; the hydration properties seemed to have sensors to know where to be distributed and adjusted to compensate for an uneven skintone.  The aromas were fresh and uplifting.  Some of the key ingredients included Mitostime algae extract, Vitamins C and E, Noni fruit extract and walnut extract, which are rich in Omega fatty acids; Noni is also prized in Southeast Asia because of its beneficial properties for skin health.  I loved the high performance of both products, especially when used together for maximum synergy, which also intensified the product’s efficacy.  http://www.darphin.com

Sothys Paris ~ Hydra-Nourishing Body Lotion and Lemon and Petitgrain Nourishing Body Elixir*
Both of these products were an exceptional treat post-shower.  My skin quickly absorbed the Lotion, without leaving any tacky residue and dissipating dryness; texture of the skin was firm and refined.  After an application of the Lotion, I’d spray the Elixir after a thorough application of the Lotion to intensify the hydration effects.  While both products had a lovely aroma, the Elixir’s was phenomenal.  Key ingredients for the Lotion included corn germ oil, sweet almond protein, algae extract, shea butter and Vitamin E.  Key ingredients for the Elixir included sunflower seed oil, soybean oil and Vitamin E.  When products were used together, maximum synergy was achieved and product efficacy was attained.

~ TRESSES ~

Phyto Paris ~ Volumizing Shampoo Fine Hair, Express Conditioner and Volumizing Spray
I wasn’t blessed with a head of thick luscious hair, but after using both the Shampoo and Conditioner, my hair felt richer and fuller; the consistency of product was rich and dense, without weighing the hair down.  Not onlywas their more volume after using these products, but my hair also had a remarkable strength and vibrancy to it, including a healthy luster.  My hair definitely was healthier and revitalized, something not appreciated until after using high quality products like these, compared to what I had previously been using.  Key ingredients in the Shampoo included Chitin extract from crustacean shells, red algae extract, yarrow, Guarana and tormentil root.  Key ingredients in the Conditioner included Gleditsia extract from the Honeylocust plant, red algae extract and elderflower extract. The Spray held the style, without weighing down the hair or leaving a tacky residue.  Key ingredients for the Spray included beetroot alcohol, nasturtium extract and wheat protein extract.  All products had a subtle, yet lovely aroma and were enjoyable to use.  http://www.phyto-usa.com

~ FINISHING TOUCHES ~

Caron Paris ~ La Poudre Peau Fine and Bellodgia Eau De Parfum
This iconic luxury brand has been revered and coveted by women worldwide since its inception in 1903.  It launched its initial luxury powder in that year to pair with its first fragrance (Tabac Blond).  It wouldn’t be until 1935 that Caron Paris began to subtly add the luxurious scent of distilled Bulgarian Rose to its exquisite powders.  La Poudre Peau Fine is an extravagant way to finish the face with delicate loose powder; the Poudre also includes the signature Caron Puff; its silken touch glides across the skin, leaving a hint of transparent finish; throughout the day, I didn’t have to bother with any touch-up; there wasn’t any shine in the “T” zone, which is often problematic when wearing makeup.  Key ingredients included Vitamins A and E, powdered silk, distilled Bulgarian Rose, camellia oil, antioxidants and kaolin.  I chose the Transparent “color”, which provided a natural and light coverage. This luxurious and delicate powder is ideal for all skin types, including those with skin sensitivities.  The Poudre comes in a beautiful signature gold metallic case with the Caron classic dot pattern on its lid.  Topping off this finishing touch was a spritz of one my treasured fragrances, Bellodgia.  Caron introduced this luxury fragrance in 1927.  I first fell in love with this gorgeous fragrance in the late sixties when I started college; a small sample bottle (yes, a bottle!) was tucked in a welcome box distributed at registration; I felt so elegant and grown-up every time I wore it, or just breathed in its intoxicating aroma upon opening the bottle.  The extraordinary top notes include carnation and rose; middle notes, jasmine, violet and muguet; and, base notes, musk, clove, vanilla and sandalwood.  The dry-down is subtle and gradual, although the top and middle notes delicately remain.  One spritz easily transported me back to my youth by surrounding me with the exquisite aromatic mélange of floral blossoms.  http://www.parfumscaron.com

29 Cosmetics ~ Grape Seed Age-Protecting Preserves First Crush Lip Scrub, Preserves Wine Blot Lip Treatment SPF20 and Preserves Hint of Honey Lip Treatment
Founded by Lydia Mondavi (yes, that Mondavi, vino royalty!), all of the products in this luxurious line are formulated with anti-aging ingredients that treat and nurture the skin.  These three products complement each other and to maximize their efficacy.  Step one is using the First Crush Lip Scrub to delicately and effectively exfoliate and remove dead cells from the lips; imparts an incredibly smoothed and hydrated surface with its multi-hydrating oil complex.  Key ingredients included apricot seed powder, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, Vitamin E and shea butter.  Step two is using the Wine Blot Lip Treatment SPF 20 after thoroughly exfoliating.  What’s great about the Wine Blot Lip Treatment is that it’s also a sunscreen and can stand alone as a lip balm.  It also drenches the delicate tissue with exceptional hydration.  Key ingredients include castor seed oil and grape seed oil.  Step three is using the Hint of Honey Lip Treatment and pairs beautifully on top of the Wine Blot Lip Treatment and also drenches the delicate tissue with exceptional hydration.  While it can easily be worn alone for a delicate hint of shimmery color, Hint of Honey Lip Treatment maximizes the hydration properties of the Wine Blot Lip Treatment when applied over it.  Key ingredients included castor seed oil and grape seed oil.  http://www.29cosmetics.com

While definitions of what constitutes luxury might differ from mine, including the experience and product preferences, what matters most is how one feels about their particular experience and the results they may gain from using their preferred products to improve both their skin and their state of being.

I encourage you to visit each product’s website and become familiar with the product lines, and if you’re active on Facebook and/or Twitter, don’t forget to also “like” or “follow” these lines.  Product availability may be limited to specialty retail boutiques, select salons and spas, or online.

Lastly, try to set some time aside each day, or at least each week, to focus to reclaim the "you" that may have become lost in the frenzy of your crazy-busy life.  Doing so isn’t hedonistic, but an investment in yourself and optimal restoration and renewal.  No one deserves this special time more than you.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

SPA AT HOME

I’ve been covering aspects of spa for over twenty years, and while it is possible to approximate and create a spa experience at home,  the only genuine way to experience a spa and benefit from it is to actually go to one.  That being said, however, one can replicate aspects of spa experiences while in a home setting, provided planning, organizing, conditions and product mix come together as one, but again, it isn’t meant to replace an actual spa experience.  For example, just in the area of the treatment experience at the hands of a highly skilled, trained and experienced spa technician, it is impossible for one to replicate that individual’s touch and skill in the home setting.

The spa experience is sensory-driven and should engage the five senses of tactile, taste, auditory, visual and olfactory.  The innate senses such as emotion and psyche, which greatly rely on perception and imprinting recall, also come into play.  When one’s senses are engaged, the efficacy of the experience is elevated.

Following are a number of products I recently tried that effectively transform your spa at home experience to one that captures the essence of a spa experience, as if you’re at one.  I’ve also included a few DIY tips and treats for you to also consider as part of your spa at home experience.  The products, tips and treats are all based on engaging various senses throughout the experience to magnify one’s sensory acuities.  So, get ready and go and get your spa on…..

~ PRODUCTS FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE ~

CRABTREE & EVELYN ~
Tarocca Orange, Eucalyptus & Sage Body and Hand Care Collection ~ Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing various products from Crabtree & Evelyn, and have always enjoyed the unique aromatic and restorative formulations.  Launched in mid-February, this product range was aromatherapeutic, hydrating and restorative.  I tried the Ultra Moisturising Hand Therapy, Skin Invigorating Bath & Shower Gel, and Silk Silkening Body Soufflé.  Each product was infused with anti-oxidant rich Vitamin C, Tarocca Sicilian red orange extract, eucalyptus extract and sage extract.  Some of the other key ingredients included cedarwood, patchouli, aloe leaf, macadamia seed oil, angelica, shea butter and juniper berry.  The aromas of the ingredients were uplifting, fresh and invigorating.  Ingredients were restorative and revitalized.  Hydration levels were noticeably improved after one use and were maintained throughout the day.  The Bath & Shower Gel thoroughly cleansed without leaving skin dry.  The Hand Therapy and Body Soufflé were quickly absorbed and left no residue or tack.

PEVONIA ~
Your Skincare Solution Spa-At-Home Essentials Kit ~ This handy all-in-one Spa-At-Home Essentials Kit is ideal for home or travel and comes complete with Pevonia’s top performing skincare products.  Included in the Essentials Kit are Silky Skin Body Scrub, Anti-Stress Bath Salts, Anti-Stress Bath & Shower Gel, Preserve Body Moisturizer, Spalasium Spa Ambiance Candle (Place of Serenity Lavender aroma) and a handy reference card “Four Easy Steps to Spa-At-Home Bliss”; everything is neatly stored in its own white waffle cloth design zippered carrying bag; the inside of the bag is made of waterproof material to prevent any leakage or spillage from getting onto clothing, if used in traveling.  Ingredients in the Scrub included safflower seed oil, sage extract, chamomile flower extract, rosemary leaf extract, aloe leaf gel, lemon peel oil and jojoba seed powder.  Ingredients in the Salts included sea salt, ylang ylang essential oil, lavender flower oil, balsam fir oil and orange peel oil.  Ingredients in the Bath & Shower Gel included hazel nut oil, sweet almond seed oil, sesame seed oil, chamomile flower oil, cornflower extract, lavender flower extract, and linden flower extract.  Ingredients in the Moisturizer included safflower seed oil, Vitamin E, alpha hydroxy acids, rosemary leaf extract, chamomile flower extract, horsetail leaf extract, pine leaf extract, lemon peel oil, French rose extract and orris root.  Each product delivered intended results beautifully and effectively.  My skin was clean, gently exfoliated, revitalized and exceptionally hydrated.  The aromas of each product were refreshing and calming.   Over the years, I’ve reviewed various Pevonia products and have always enjoyed their formulations and effectiveness; it’s understandable why this spa brand is a preferred one at so many spa facilities.  http://www.pevonia.com

TYBEE SALT COTTAGE SALACIA ~
Hand Scrub and Salt Soak ~ The Hand Scrub (Midnight Garden aroma) was ideal for hands, elbows, knees and other body parts that were in need of gentle exfoliation.  Key ingredients included Atlantic sea salt, aloe leaf juice, shea butter, coconut oil, dried rosemary and essential oils.  Product gently and effectively exfoliated, while restoring hydration levels; after rinsing, there wasn’t any greasy residue or tackiness; pleasant aroma.  The Salt Soak (Southern Pecan aroma) was ideal for bathing or foot soaks.  Key ingredients included Atlantic sea salts, pecans and essential oils.  Product effectively restored hydration levels without leaving any trace of the sweet aroma, which was more like pie than a treatment soak.  All products are handcrafted and packaged in beautiful recylced cobalt blue glass or plastic containers.  Environmentally and ethically formulated without sulfates, colorants, parabens, petrochemicals or animal products.  Products are available in a variety of natural aromas.  One of my favorite aromas, rose, is their latest fragrance edition to this lovely line.  Packaging can also be custom imprinted for special events, which makes for ideal gift giving (bridal or baby showers).  http://www.salaciasalts.com

~ DIY TIPS & TREATS ~

TIPS ~
In General ~ Set aside time to disconnect from reality and create a new one that’s filled with relaxation and restorative indulgence.  Consider the type of relaxation music you want to listen to and then have it ready to play throughout your special time.  Prepare ahead of time the healthy fruit or veggie infused waters you’ll refresh yourself with throughout the day.  Begin your day with simple stretching movements, followed by introspection and contemplation.  Plan a light and healthy breakfast, such as green tea or an herbal tisane, Greek-style yogurt with fresh fruit and a nutrient-dense healthy muffin (same for a healthy lunch of a hearty salad).  Plan your time accordingly and block out any outside influences and the extraneous that might be disruptive to your relaxed rhythm.  Take the time to go for a walk and get reacquainted with nature and just having some personal time without anyone else seemingly bothering you.  If you have children, make arrangements for someone to take care of them while you’re restoring yourself.

TREATS ~
Dry Brushing ~ If you don’t have a body brush with firm bristles, consider buying one; in lieu of a firm-bristle body brush, a loofah chunk or mitt is recommended.  Using one of these on dry skin is great for exfoliating and revving up the circulation.  Using circular small motions, begin from the feet and work your way up the body, towards the heart.   Make sure to avoid any sensitive areas, especially areas with broken skin.  Do not dry brush to recently shaved or sunburned skin, otherwise irritation will result.

Gentle Facial Scrub ~ You’ll need a gentle oil, such as almond, jojoba or olive, as well as corn meal.  Place a small amount of corn meal in the palm of your hand and to this add a small amount of the oil, or enough to make a paste.  Apply this to face and gently rub the skin using small circular motions with the fingertips.  Gently rinse off with warm water and blot dry.  The oil will provide sufficient hydration to the skin.

Pedi Soak ~ You’ll need a large bowl or basin (I use a large stainless bread mixing bowl), Epsom salts (or baking soda), a scented essential oil (optional), marbles (floral or conventional), pedi paddle or super-fine grade sandpaper block (or a dish scrubby), and a gentle oil (almond, jojoba or olive).  Fill basin/bowl with warm water.  Add Epsom salts (or baking soda, or both), and any optional scented essential oils; mix all ingredients thoroughly.  Add marbles.  Soak feet in mix, taking time to gently rub the soles of your feet over the marbles to stimulate and revitalize the circulation; this is also great for giving oneself a foot massage.  After twenty to thirty minutes of soaking, remove feet and then dry; gently exfoliate any calloused areas (use a pedi paddle, sandpaper block or dish scrubby); apply the oil to feet and moisturize (or use one of your body moisturizers); to keep the feet protected and to seal in the moisture, wear cotton socks.  This is an ideal treat prior to retiring for the evening.

Rosewater Toner ~ A culinary-grade Rosewater (available at specialty stores, Indian or Middle Eastern grocery stores, or in mass retail grocery chains with an import section) is an inexpensive alternative to facial-grade Rosewater, and it’s a very refreshing facial toner.  Transfer the Rosewater to a fine mister for ease of applying.  The culinary-grade is wonderful when chilled and sprayed on the face throughout the day as a quick pick-me-up.

Witch Hazel & Rosewater Astringent Toner ~ Mix the culinary-grade Rosewater with Witch Hazel.  The gentle astringent property of the witch hazel in combination with the rosewater makes for a gentle finishing toner.  I use this mix especially during the summer or after a vigorous workout.  This is ideal for cooling down an over-heated face and as a refresher throughout the day.

These are just a few of spa at home DIY Treats I’ve put together and have enjoyed during my own special time.

~ IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU & YOU DESERVE IT ~

Prior to your spa at home experience, plan what you want to accomplish and organize your approach, and remember that taking time to regroup, unwind, decompress, relax and restore isn’t hedonistic ~ it’s an investment in self.  Don’t regret the time you’ve set aside for yourself.  And while spa at home may be all about you, you’ve earned this time and you definitely deserve it!

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

NEW PRODUCT DISCOVERIES TO TRY

It’s amazing how many different products and brands are out there for the consumer to try and buy.  For me, I learn about new products through Internet research, by a public relations firm contacting me about their client and the latest and greatest products, or getting samples at a spa or industry show.

Caveat, before making a significant investment in purchasing any of these products, ask about getting sample sizes first to test-drive and make sure your skin doesn’t react adversely to any of the ingredients, or if they aren’t doing what was expected or advertised.  If the retail or online outlet, salon or spa doesn’t offer any samples, make sure to inquire about a return policy for full-sized product purchases in the event there are adverse reactions to the product or the product’s performance wasn’t as “advertised” or represented.  If these are “if-y” or nonexistent options, I’d recommend that you pass on the purchase altogether, especially since there is a huge selection of other products to consider that may have comparable formulations.  Following are some recent new product finds I tried and wanted to share with you.

Eva-NYC ~ Get Up and Go! Hair Care Travel Kit
I came across this company’s exhibit at the recent International Home+Housewares Show in Chicago.  In the Travel Kit were the Clean It Up Shampoo, Soften Up Conditioner, Therapy Session Hair Mask and Hungry Hair Oil Treatment.  I have fine, oily hair; during the colder months, however, it becomes dry due to decreased levels of humidity.  The products I tried performed well on my hair, since it was still the temps were still on the colder and drier side.  The primary ingredients in each product included Keravis protein and Argan oil; the Keravis strengthened, while the Argan nourished.  After using the products, my hair was nourished with a healthy shine; they also tamed my static airborne strands of hair.  http://www.eva-nyc.com

Fiafini Marula Oil Skin Care ~ Delicate Cleansing Emulsion, Divine Hydration Moisturizer, Exceptional Skin Serum and Deluxe Anti-Aging Eye Cream
Over the years, the skincare industry has seen a number of ingredient trends for hydration and nourishment.  Some have included oils and butters derived from Almond, Jojoba, Olive, Coconut, Kukui, Macadamia, Argan and Marula.  Many of these oils and butters have been used for hundreds of years by women from around the world as multi-purpose substances used in cooking, for healing wounds, or for hydrating the skin and hair.  Always in search of the next best ingredient trend, companies and their product formulators have turned these ingredients into global wonders.  All Fiafini products contain Marula Oil, known for years by South African women for its hydrating properties; it’s also rich in antioxidants and Omega 9 and 6, essential fatty acids, both known to minimize the signs of aging by nourishing and treating the skin.   Fiafini products also contain natural plant extract derivatives and essential oils, which further enable the products to have natural therapeutic properties.  Some of the additional healing and restorative ingredients include agave, cactus, Evening Primrose, aloe, yucca, lavender, oat and avocado.  Each product I tried was gentle and hydrating.  The Cleansing Emulsion didn’t dry my skin and left it slightly hydrated.  The Skin Serum and Hydration Moisturizer were quickly absorbed and left no tacky or greasy residue.  The Eye Cream was non-irritating and quickly absorbed without leaving any residue.  Products are recommended for all skin types, including sensitive.  The aromas are subtle and I especially enjoyed those containing lavender essential oil.  http://www.fiafini.com

Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection ~ Brow Structure Clear Set
Joey Healy brings his expertise and passion as a licensed esthetician, makeup artist and eyebrow stylist with products that turn dull and lackluster eyebrows into the natural beauties they were meant to be.  I tried the Brow Structure Clear Set.  The product groomed my brows to their natural arched line by lifting and defining the growth without making it look stiff or artificial.  I loved the tapered brush, which gave maximum lift and definition without leaving any telltale signs of product.  http://www.joeyhealy.com

Night Care ~ Intensive Healing Foot Cream
Like anyone else, my feet take a beating just with the daily routine.  Callouses and dry cracked skin result, turning the skin into a weapon that snags hose, not too mention makes the feet look unsightly and grooming-ignored.  I saw an immediate improvement to my foot issues after one application of the Foot Cream; I applied it to my feet and then covered my feet with socks.  Rough cracked skin was smooth and super-hydrated.  Main ingredients include mineral and corn oil, lactic acid and Vitamin A and E; the lactic acid was gentle and non-irritating.  I also enjoyed the fact that its aroma wasn’t the ubiquitous minty smell, so common with other comparable products.  http://www.nightcareproducts.com

PUR Attitude ~ Fountain of Youth Serum and Insta-Results Face Lift Gel
My skin can be finicky at times; during the winter, the T-zone is normalized and the cheek areas are dry; the reverse occurs during the summer.  The Youth Serum can be used alone or under moisturizer.  After cleansing and toning my face, I applied the Youth Serum, which has a clear gel consistency.  It was quickly absorbed and didn’t leave any tacky residue; its aroma was neutral.  The only issue I had with the product was that the texture of my cheek area didn’t feel hydrated and its texture was grainy.  The Insta-Results Face Lift Gel was a bit challenging for me, since I don’t have sagging skin or visible wrinkles.  I did, however, apply the Lift Gel in the inset of my “marionette folds”; the product tightened to slightly soften the inset skin.  This product went on easily, was absorbed quickly and didn’t leave any sticky residue; its aroma was neutral.  The philosophy of the company is “Safe Beauty” and their products are formulated to avoid the inclusion of harsh chemicals, parabens, PEG’, glycols, sulfates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and artificial dyes.  For an additional resource on the beauty industry, David Pollack, the name behind the brand, has written a concise insider’s book on everything and anything you always wanted to know about the industry, “Just Stop the Lies ~ Secrets the Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know”.  Lastly, I’d like to suggest a different cap for each product; the squared plastic edges are very sharp and made for difficult uncapping of each product.  http://www.purattitude.com

For additional information on each product, be sure to check out their websites and explore their entire product line.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

ROSE PERFECTION

“…a rose by any other name would smell as sweet…”
(Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”; Act II, Scene II)

Throughout the ages, the rose has come to symbolize perfection and love.  It has been portrayed and praised in religion, poetry, prose, music and art.  Roses have been coveted when used as culinary floral water for edibles, or in tinctures, tisanes, added to teas, or in fragrances or personal care products.  Its evocative aroma embraces the senses and imprints the psyche with a subtle and scrumptious fragrance that refreshes memories of a past life.  The perfectly formed petals and head are visually adored, whether living or when pressed dried as a memento.  Throughout history, queens and kings and commoners have known the rose. The rose has represented many things to many people, with most being awestruck over nature’s divine and perfect beauty.

The rose has been around for millions of years, has approximately 150 species, is worldwide with each continent having its own variety.  The rose and its derivatives have been prized for personal care and skincare because of natural properties that include cell regenerating, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, high in Vitamin C (antioxidant), non-irritating, natural astringent, natural fragrance, toning and moisturizing.

While February is the month of St. Valentine’s Day, a day of love and for remembering those we love, it is also National Heart Health Month, which is also fitting for St. Valentine’s day, since the heart and cupid’s arrow in the heart also exemplify this day of love and remembrance.   Red roses symbolize beauty, love, affection and romance.  Again, very fitting for this day of love and remembrance.

I chose the following products for this edition because of the purity of the rose-based ingredients, in addition to each product’s favorable efficacy.  I’m also partial to these products because I love the scrumptious rose aroma.  These products had a pure, subtle and non-irritating aroma that was calming and uplifting, making them very aromatherapeutic.  The rose derivatives (petals, essential oil, fruit) were also healing, while providing effective skin and body care.  Enjoy!

Jurlique* ~ Rosewater Balancing Mist and Skin Balancing Face Oil ~ Jurlique has had a strong commitment to skincare based on natural and organic plant-based ingredients for their products.  The Rosewater Balancing Mist was extremely gently and rehydrating and left my skin feeling refreshed.  The subtle aroma of rose was uplifting.  Ingredients include rose flower extract, rose essential oil, grapefruit seed extract, aloe vera and marshmallow extract.  The product was cooling and non-irritating and ideal after cleansing, but also wonderful as pick-me-up spritz throughout the day.  The Skin Balancing Face Oil delivered a depth of hydration that penetrated the skin quickly without leaving any tacky or greasy residue, while also being very gentle.  Ingredients include rose flower extract, rosehip oil, Evening Primrose oil, macadamia seed oil, marshmallow, avocado oil, jojoba oil and shea butter.  http://www.jurlique.com/

PINO Natural Spa Therapy* ~ Wild Rose Natural Spa Therapy Body Oil and Body Lotion ~ PINO Natural Spa Therapy first introduced its natural products to European spas in the early 1900s.  Products use only the purest forms of plant extracts and essential oils without any preservatives, synthetic or other toxic additives; products use organic ingredients that are environmentally friendly.  I’ve enjoyed the Wild Rose products because of their efficacy and aromatherapeutic properties.  The Body Oil reminded me of a fresh cut rose thanks to ingredients like rose fruit oil and rose flower extract; other ingredients included coconut and jojoba oils, sunflower seed oil and Vitamins A and E.  The Body Oil has a silky consistency that’s absorbed quickly without leaving any tacky or greasy residue; the product was effective on my body and my dry cuticles; gentle and rehydrating with a heady lingering aroma of healing and calming rose.  The Body Lotion also had a scrumptious rose aroma; ingredients included rose fruit oil and rose flower extract, plus coconut and jojoba oils, sunflower seed oil and Vitamins A and E, plus shea butter.   The Body Lotion also had a silky rich consistency and was absorbed quickly and didn’t leave any type of residue; it too was gentle, very rehydrating, soothing and restorative.  https://www.pinospa.com/

Shankara* ~ Sacred Essence Lotus-Rose Aromatherapy Oil ~ With the tradition of Ayurveda, Sacred Essence Lotus-Rose is formulated for all skin types (Tridosha) and is an exotic blend of rare sacred and pure essential oils that include the white rose (Egypt) and blue lotus (India); other ingredients include pure essential oils of jasmine, frangipani and sandalwood.  This exotic blend is to be placed on the pulse points and recommended for yoga or meditation.  I found the aroma to be very complex and strong; a small amount on the inside of my wrists was sufficient to transport me from the land of stress to the land of relaxation.  http://www.shankara.com/

~ My DIY Share ~

Buying a rosewater-specific skincare product, such as a toner, can be pricey.  Instead, consider buying culinary-grade rosewater, which is available at specialty stores, Indian or Middle Eastern grocery stores, or in mass retail grocery chains that have an import section; the packaging may not be as upscale, but the ingredient is formidable.  For hundreds of years, women all over the world relied on this grade of rosewater for their personal care and culinary needs.  The culinary-grade is wonderful when chilled and sprayed on the face throughout the day for a quick pick-me-up.  It’s also great mixed with witch hazel; the gentle astringent property of the witch hazel in combination with the rosewater makes for a gentle finishing toner.  I use this mix especially during the summer or after a vigorous workout.  This is ideal for cooling down an over-heated face.

~ Here’s to Celebrating ~

Lastly, don’t overlook your local spas, restaurants, or hotels for St. Valentine’s Day specials; this also includes resorts that are close proximity to your area.  It’s still not to late to book appointments or make reservations.

And, don’t just wait for this day to show up on your calendar as a reminder about that someone special in your life. Make everyday special for them and not just this one-day a year.  Let your love know that you care and couldn’t live without them!

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.
