SENSORY EXPERIENCES

Engaging the senses has always been key to the spa experience.   This engagement can mean the difference between remaining stressed-out or achieving relaxation and restoration.  Going to a spa isn’t hedonism or an indulgence, but rather an investment in self.  Unfortunately, far too many spas have overly emphasized the hedonistic aspects of the experience, rather than the healing or restorative qualities of the experience.

Historically, relaxation, and restoration were the driving forces behind traditional health spas and why individuals sought them out.  The often-haphazard temporary fix so many consumers have sought in going to a spa to “cure” whatever was ailing them today, undermines and diminishes the real purpose for going to one.  If one rushes into a spa all stressed-out and then gets a therapeutic body massage, for example, and leaves expecting to have all of their stress dissipated by that single treatment without fully understanding why they were stressed out and how to eliminate it, then they’re missing the purpose of the spa experience.  Many spas are also missing an opportunity of informing and educating their clients on how to continue any benefits of relaxation or restoration they experienced from the treatment once they leave the confines of the spa, and returning back to reality.

Whether we realize it or not, everything we do each day is impacting our senses.  Sometimes the impact is pleasant, while other times not so pleasant.  Those real life sensory experiences have a dramatic impact on our memory, since the experiences are imprinted, which explains why some people prefer certain colors, or aromas, or types of music, etc. to that of others.  Keeping that in mind, the following products also impact the senses, and in differing ways.  These products are restorative for the face and body, while also being aromatherapeutic, which does brings about a sense of calming and relaxation.

Colorlab Custom Lipstick, Sinnissippi Rose ~ This special color of Sinnissippi Rose was customized for a Rockford Park District (IL) Wine and Roses Gala in 2012; held at the Sinnissippi Rose Gardens, one of Rockford’s Great Gardens, the gala was a benefit for the Rockford Park District's City of Gardens and the Sinnissippi Rose Garden Endowment.  The Sinnissippi Rose Garden boasts of two thousand rose plants from sixty-two varieties.  The custom Lipstick was named after this garden to represent one of its many rich hued roses.  Colorlab lipstick formulations are rich in Vitamin E, oils of jojoba, macadamia nut and grape seed, green tea extract, shea butter, and aloe; the hydrating formula drenches the lips with natural ingredients that protect and nourish.  Photo by Lyndi Toohill.  http://colorlabcosmetics.com/   http://www.rockfordparkdistrict.org/index.php/facilities/parks/city-of-gardens

Eight Skincare Lavender Body Softening Oil ~ This Lavender Body Softening Oil comes in a handy spray bottle that’s ideal for travel or workout.  Before showering, I prepped my skin with a thorough dry brushing, which helps get the circulation going, but also helps slough off any dead skin cells.  After showering and then spraying the Softening Oil all over, my skin felt incredibly hydrated.  The product was quickly absorbed without being greasy or tacky.  My skin felt silky and hydrated throughout the day.  Key ingredients include oils from safflower seed, lavender, jojoba seed, apricot kernel, sunflower seed, sweet almond, avocado, rice bran, wheat germ, gardenia flower extract, and evening primrose.  The product was also very aromatherapeutic.  http://www.eightskincare.com/

Jurlique Rose Shower Gel, Rose Hand Cream, Rose Body Cream, Rose Moisturising Cleanser, and Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense-Deluxe Edition ~ I love the aroma of rose and these products didn’t disappoint.  The Rose Shower Gel is highly concentrated and very little was required to create a rich cleansing foam that left my skin feeling hydrated with the delicate aroma of pure rose on my skin.  Both the Hand Cream and Body Cream drenched my skin with nourishing hydration that was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; both also left a subtle aroma of pure rose on my skin. The Moisturising Cleanser created a gentle and hydrating foam that deep cleans the skin without stripping it dry; it’s also rich in anti-aging antioxidants.  The Balancing Mist also hydrated the skin, while toning and refreshing the skin; it set the skin perfectly for my moisturizer; the Balancing Mist was also ideal used throughout the day to freshen the face; key ingredients include a proprietary blend of rose varieties that are equal to ten thousand rose petals per bottle, as well as marshmallow, aloe vera, glycerin, and grapefruit seed.  The rich dense aroma of pure rose makes all of these products highly aromatherapeutic.  Jurlique has been providing natural skincare for over twenty-five years, using organic and natural ingredients grown and harvested from their own farms and used in their product formulations.  http://www.jurlique.com/discover-jurlique/about/

MIYU Teas & Beauty A Prettea Little Quartet ~ The pairing of coordinated skincare with tea is a unique lifestyle approach that’s also forward thinking and has healing attributes based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which involves the sense of beauty originating both inside and out.  MIYU’s approach is to combine a serum with a tea to achieve that balance and involves a Hydrate and a De-Stress component; the first is for the morning and the second, the evening.  The Hydrate Mi component is a two-step approach involving a restorative and nurturing spray serum paired with an energizing tea.  The Hydrate Mi Spray Serum is rich in antioxidant botanicals that include wild pansy, rose, goji berries and mangosteen.  The Hydrate Mi Tea is a blend of green rooibos, goji berries, and rose petals.  Pansy improves circulation and improves hydration; rose is soothing and softening and also aids in circulation; mangosteen is rich in antioxidants; green rooibos is rich in flavonoids, which tackle free radials; and, goji is also rich in antioxidants and collagen-enhancing Vitamin C, which also aids in maintaining the softness of skin.  The De-Stress Mi component pairs a recovery and restorative spray serum with a calming tea.  The De-Stress Mi Spray Serum includes five essential minerals (silicon, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc) that protect the skin’s barrier and decreases stress, irritation and inflammation; it also includes dandelion, which also functions to decrease stress and inflammation; it also contains ginger, a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory; another soothing ingredient is licorice, which contributes to skin brightening; and, honeysuckle sooths and protects the skin from negative environmental affects.  The De-Stress Tea contains peppermint, rich in Vitamins A and C, which is both refreshing and calming; it also contains licorice root, another calming and anti-inflammatory ingredient, and chamomile, which further soothes, calms and heals.  Each Serum Spray and its corresponding Tea were refreshing.  http://www.miyubeauty.com/

Molton Brown Kumudu Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner ~ I loved using these products.  My short, fine, oily hair was left in the best condition I’d seen or felt in years.  The key ingredients in both products include Brazilian Kumudu Fruit extract for conditioning and enhancing body volumizing; amino acids help to improve the luster and shine, and extracts of magnolia, grapefruit and cedar make for an intense aromatherapeutic quality, which was delightful.  http://www.moltonbrown.com/store/index.jsp

Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Anti-Radical Age Defense Moisture Complex and Cream Extreme Intensive Repair ~ I’m not a fan of “cosmeceuticals” because many are too harsh for my finicky skin.  That being said, I was pleasantly surprised at the gentleness and effectiveness of the Anti-Radical Defense Moisture Complex.  Geared for normal to dry skin, key anti-aging ingredients include vegetable squalane, hydrolyzed wheat and soy protein, Vitamin E, Ubiquinone 50, watermelon fruit extract, and linoleic acid.  The Moisture Complex had a rich consistency that when on smoothly and was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; my skin maintained its hydration levels throughout the day.  The product was non-irritating and distributed balanced moisture; areas that were normal never became oily, and areas that were dry, became hydrated and brought to a level of hydration as the normal areas; the skin had a silky texture; the aroma was neutral.  The Cream Extreme Intensive Repair, which is recommended for dry and sensitive skin, was too rich for my skin; although my skin has dry patches and is frequently reactive, the formulation was dense and ointment-like, even after warming it in my palm before applying it; the aroma seemed medicinal.  http://www.osmotics.com/index.aspx

Philip Kingsley Pure Silver Shampoo and Conditioner ~ My once-upon-a-time dishwater blonde hair is nearly all gray and defines my age.  I enjoyed using these products, which are formulated with violet hues and optical brighteners to add luster and shine to dulling gray hair.  Both the Shampoo and Conditioner left my hair very soft and easy to manage; they also left a hint of shine.  I also loved the aroma of lavender essential oil, which is in both products.  http://www.philipkingsley.com/

Weleda Arnica Massage Oil ~ I’ve been a huge fan of this line since the 1970s.  The Arnica Massage Oil does double-duty as a massage oil and as an exceptional moisturizer, which left my skin feeling like I’d just applied a dry oil.  The product was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue.  Key ingredients include sunflower seed oil, olive oil and Arnica Montana extract, rosemary and lavender.  The Arnica Montana is also very soothing for stiff and sore muscles.  This product is definitely aromatherapeutic, while also being calming, restoring and hydrating.  http://www.weleda.com/

Whish Coconut Shave Crave Cream and Deodorant Swipes ~ The Shave Crave Shave Cream is ideal for women’s shaving needs.  The formulation includes key ingredients like natural squalene, an Omega-3 fatty acid and organic shea butter; soothing organic green tea and organic coconut oil; and, nourishing and restorative organic joboba seed oil.  These ingredients left my skin incredibly smooth and also hydrated and helped the razor glide without tugging or nicking.  Whish suggests a “double shave” to optimize closeness and ingredient benefit ~ once “with” the hair growth, then a second application of product, and then “against” the growth.  While I enjoyed the product and how my legs and underarms felt after using it, I’m not a fan of Coconut.  Whish Shave Crave Cream comes in a variety of aroma profiles; I would’ve loved trying Lemongrass, Lavender or Almond; maybe next time.  The Deodorant Swipes are a dual-purpose product; first, they inhibit hair growth when used regularly after shaving and second, they’re supposed to eliminate odor.  While my experience was that the Swipes were gentle and didn’t irritate the delicate underarm skin, the odor wasn’t tamed at all.  The Deodorant Swipes key ingredients include chaparral extract to inhibit growth, seaweed extract and organic sea buckthorn fruit extract to protect and firm, and odor inhibiting ingredients like odenone and saccharomyces ferment.  http://www.whishbody.com/index.php

~ Esthetics Under the Surface ~

I’m not one to want to get an injectable in my face to make myself appear younger or deal with the natural on-set of aging, code for sagging and wrinkles; and I certainly don’t begrudge others for wanting to go that route.  Dermal fillers, or injectables, have improved over the years through extensive research, development and technology.  Many of these fillers include Collagen, Botox, Restylane, Juvederm, Captique, etc.  However, before pursuing this journey, a person needs to perform extensive due diligence as to what products are currently being offered for cosmetic esthetics, making sure they’re all FDA approved, and which products are safest, including case studies, before and after imagery, duration of effectiveness, pain or side effects, and recovery time; and, above all, the individual must do sufficient research as to the qualifications and experience level of the plastic surgeon or dermatologist who will be administering the injectable. Take a tour of their facility, ask plenty of questions, ask for multiple referrals, etc.  Also, make sure to have a conference with your doctor fully exploring any contraindications you might encounter during and after the procedure.

Normal hormonal changes as the body ages is also part of appearing old; this includes the body losing its ability to naturally produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are the basis of healthy and firm skin; a normal decrease in estrogen and testosterone also contribute to the aging process.  As these normal processes change, the skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity and suppleness, and also contributes to facial wrinkles.

Injectables are an option that puts back what normal aging has taken away.  Those seeking cosmetic options like this generally do so to diminish their visible signs of aging.  And although aging is a natural part of life, its effects are further impacted by lifestyle, including stress, diet, smoking, alcohol, sleep deprivation, etc., assessing these factors and making appropriate changes should also be part of the course of action, in addition to seeking any cosmetic procedure.  To reiterate, arm yourself with as much information as possible before you go through with any invasive procedure, including injectables.  Following are a few options to consider that represent the latest in FDA approved injectables for cosmetic procedures, which are part of Merz Aesthetics.

Radiesse Volumizing Filler ~ Radiesse Volumizing Filler has been clinically tested to be the only wrinkle filler that immediately replenishes lost volume, while stimulating the production of the patient’s own natural collagen for long-lasting results; it has also been clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients.  Patients treated with this product were significantly more satisfied than patients treated with other leading wrinkle fillers based on the efficacy and longevity of the injection.  http://www.radiesse.com/

Belotero Balance Dermal Filler ~ Belotero Balance Dermal Filler is designed to integrate into a patient’s skin and mold it to their distinct facial contours, which softens lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth for a smooth and natural appearance.  The product’s versatility cam handle deep treatment areas like the nasolabial folds as well as more delicates areas such as vertical lines above the lip.  Clinical trials supported the effects to last up to six months or more.  http://www.belotero.com/

Xeomin ~ Xeomin is used in facial aesthetics to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar frown lines between the eyes (glabellar lines) in adults.  It also contains botulinum toxin type A.  It acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent the muscle fibers from contracting; by reducing these contractions, frown lines on the forehead and between the eyes are temporarily reduced.  Clinical trials supported the effects to last up to three months or more.

Lastly, remember to take some time for yourself and create a sensory experience that will enable you to de-stress, relax and restore.  You’re definitely worth it.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

SENSORY CONNECT

I’ve often written about the benefits of sensory engagement, especially in the context of a spa and wellness experience.  Getting in touch with our senses is a way to refocus and get grounded in matters of calm and wellbeing.  In particular, I’ve always been a strong advocate of accomplishing this by taking simple walks outdoor, clearing the mind and reconnecting with nature.  Movement among nature is key to destressing and relaxation.

I recently visited Rockford, IL as an attendee of the Travel Media Showcase 2013.  I was very impressed with what this town had to offer locals and tourists in the way of history, museums, culture conservatories and gardens.  I took advantage of a side tour, the “Great Gardens Tour”, to experience four of the city’s most prominent conservatories and gardens.  They included the Anderson Japanese Gardens (rated as number one in the U.S.), Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, and La Paloma Garden.

What I especially enjoyed about the Anderson Japanese Gardens and Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens were their offerings for events that included outdoor yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates and Zumba.  All of these forms involve movement in varying degrees of difficulty, concentration and exertion.  However, yoga and Tai Chi, especially, offer movement and concentration more conducive to relaxation and destressing.  These
two disciplines inherently ground the participant through cerebral and physical connection to an outdoor setting that is natural, a more purist form of human sensory connection to a natural surrounding.  These two elements harmonize as one and offer the participant an elevated experience that surpasses doing the same movement routines indoor in an often sterile and restrictive environment.  There is the visual, tactile, olfactory and auditory senses placed in motion; the only sense that seems to be lacking is taste.  Sensory connection with nature and self is basic.

The Anderson Japanese Gardens offers an extraordinary amount of tranquil waterfalls and ponds; between the sights and sounds, any stress is quickly removed.  The Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens also offers stress-reducing visuals within the Conservatory, but also outside among the Gardens.

I recall recently posting a beautiful image of a forest to my Facebook page and captioning it as something having to do with relaxation and getting de-stressed.  I got a chuckle when one of my much younger “friend” connections referred to his type of experience as being part of a “trend” called Eco Psychology.  I responded to her that back in the day it was just simply referred to as “communing with nature”.  I think too many trends and fads lend themselves to confusing many, which can be a deterrent.

Next time you find yourself stressed out to the max, try taking a simple, deliberative walk outdoor among nature and appreciating the beauty where you can get grounded and reconnect with yourself.  The beautiful Nicolas Conservatory & Gardens and Anderson Japanese Gardens achieve this, with or without the added benefits of yoga and Tai Chi. The Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden and La Paloma Garden also lend themselves to a reconnection and grounding of nature and self.

To walk among nature’s bountiful beauty, taking time to visually and audibly appreciate the simplicity and grandeur of nature is to find the lost self and to reclaim it!

SUMMER'S REMAINING DAYS

Summer days may be waning with vacations, picnicking, barbecuing and other outdoor activities dramatically tapering off, nearly a month remains in the season.  While summer’s last hurrah is gaining momentum, reminders like heat, humidity and blazing sun are still holding fast, despite the calendar.

Regardless of what the calendar may indicate, it’s important to remember that no matter the season or time of year, environmental and climatological aspects do wreak havoc on your skin and one must be vigilant in taking care of their skin by using an age and season appropriate skincare regimen with products that protect and hydrate the skin; it’s also important to continue using products that contain an SPF, since sun damage never takes a holiday.  Following are my latest product reviews of products that are suitable for the end of summer, but also transition nicely into fall.

Amarté Cosmetics Wonder Cream ~ This is a beautiful moisturizer that is ideal for an anti-aging skincare regimen; it’s also great for sensitive skin.  I enjoyed the dense and rich texture that went on effortlessly; it absorbed quickly without leaving any greasy or tacky residue.  My skin looked brighter and more even in tone; the texture was refined and fine lines and wrinkles were visibly diminished.  Hydration levels were maintained throughout the day.  Key ingredients include pearl powder, caviar extract, mushroom extract, propolis, Vitamin A and E, acacia collagen, argan oil, nutmeg and clove extract, eucalyptus leaf extract and grapefruit seed extract; aroma is a fresh and subtle citrus. http://www.amartecosmetics.com/

emerginC scientific organics In Lips We Trust Super Antioxidant Lip Balm and Coconut-Argan Body Oil ~ The emerginC line of cosmeceutical skincare products is well established in the industry.  Expanding their line of products to meet growing demands from discerning clients, scientific organics was introduced to meet that need of customers who wanted products that were 100% natural, paraben-free and synthetic fragrance-free that were results driven; each product contains a minimum of 70% organic ingredients and includes antioxidant plant and marine extracts, vitamins and plant stem cells.  I loved the In Lips We Trust product because it not only protected my lips, but it drenched the delicate tissue with ingredients like sweet almond oil, shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, orange oil, Vitamin E and CoQ10.  This was a great Lip Balm to use throughout the day, and was non-greasy and went on easily without pulling the delicate tissue.  I also loved the Coconut-Argan Body Oil.  This spray oil is more like a dry oil, quickly absorbed and non-greasy.  My thirsty skin was left super hydrated throughout the day.  Key ingredients include sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil, olive fruit oil, apricot kernel oil, Vitamin E and A, eucalyptus leaf oil, clove leaf oil, bergamot fruit oil and orange peel oil.  With such an extraordinary mix of oils, the product’s aroma was delicious.  For every product sold from either its original line or the scientific organics line, the company will plant a tree; this initiative is part of the non-profit Plant-It 2020 program.  In addition to this ongoing eco-commitment, emerginC has its own initiative, “emerginCeeds ~ Be the Face of Change. Plant Your Planet”; for every scientific organics product purchased, customers receive a packet of certified organic, non-GMO mixed lettuce or arugula seeds.  http://www.emerginc.com/scientific-organics.aspx
LightStim for Wrinkles and Collagen Peptide Serum ~ As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen and elastin diminishes, which results in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, which may not immediately be noticeable.  Over the years, skincare technology has advanced and with those advancements has come development of at-home devices that have been FDA cleared and approved, which benefit aging skin by accumulatively stimulating circulation and cell regeneration.  LightStim for Wrinkles is one of those devices whose technology is based on a series of therapeutic LED lights; the LED lights are in different colors, which correspond to varying wave-lengths that treat targeted areas on the face; the lights are amber, deep red and light red, plus infrared; the latter aren’t visible to the human eye.  The regular use of this device will gradually improve the skin’s ability to show visible signs of improvement in the diminishment of fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen and elastin.  I enjoyed the large surface area on the unit’s head and found it easier to treat more surface area during my treatment.  During the short time I’ve been using the unit, I’ve noticed a softening of the wrinkles on the outer part of my forehead and those in the middle, including the “elevens”, the area in between my eyebrows.  The Collagen Peptide Serum was the perfect companion treatment product.  This is a multi-function Serum that helps to improve the overall skintone; it pairs nicely while with the LightStim for Wrinkles device.  Benefits of the Serum include targeting wrinkles and fine lines, firming and oxygenating the skin and hydrating the skin; the hydration levels of skin were maintained throughout the day; this product was quickly absorbed, didn’t leave any residue and was non-irritating.  LightStim also manufactures LightStim for Acne and LightStim for Pain.  The LightStim for Wrinkles is also available at Ulta Stores.  http://www.lightstim.com/    http://www.ulta.com

Lollipops Paris Natural Cosmetics Mademoiselle Absinthe BB Cream, Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Eye Shadow, Mascara and Nail Lacquer ~ This popular makeup line from Paris, is making strong inroads throughout the world and will officially launch in the states this fall.  All of their products are formulated without the use of lanolin, parabens or preservatives.  What I also enjoyed about these products was that they were geared towards the young, girly and flirty type, yet were very complimentary to my fair skin (and maturity).  The products arrived in an adorable reusable coffret that was girly and sweet.  The BB Cream had a subtle tint to it which evened out my skintone and improved its appearance; I didn’t need to add any powder to hold the Cream; it lasted throughout the day without fading without drying or becoming chalky. The Lipstick was a sheer glossy red, Suzy Kiss, which drenched my lips with moisture and brilliant color.  The Lip Gloss in Pearly Pink gave my lips a real pop of color and brightness; it also drenched my lips with hydration.  The Eye Shadow was a beautiful pinky-taupe, Shell Pink, which also had a subtle hint of glitter; the color went on easily to give a shimmering hint of color, or could be applied more heavily to achieve a sultry smoky effect; the color didn’t fade or crease throughout the day.  The Mascara was a raven Black; the brush separated and lifted lashes, giving a very dramatic appearance; lashes were noticeably lengthened.  I didn’t get around to using the Nail Lacquer, which was in a very deep Dark Red with tinges of purple; the color is gorgeous.  http://www.lollipopsmakeup.fr/en/about-us.html

Vine Vera Resveratrol Age Defying Eye Serum ~ In my article, “The Haute Face of Summer”, I reviewed the Vine Vera Resveratrol Firming Eye Complex, which was impressive.  I also found the Age Defying Eye Serum to be impressive.  The Serum kept the delicate under eye tissue hydrated and visibly diminished fine lines; the product was gentle, non-greasy and didn’t irritate; it was also quickly absorbed and felt cooling as it was applied.  Hydration levels were maintained throughout the day.  Key ingredients include resveratrol, green tea extract, Vitamin C, aloe leaf extract, wheat protein, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, and calendula flower extract.  http://www.vinevera.com/

Walleroo Hat Company ~ Catalina Hat Design ~ I’ve always loved wearing hats, no matter the season, but especially during the summer.  Wearing them has been a minor fashion statement, but also a practical must.  I’ve primarily worn hats to protect my fair skin from getting sunburned on the face and ears.  The Walleroo Hat Company offers a number of beautifully designed hats that are fashionable by also sun safe!  Not only is this design beautifully fashioned, but its fibers are also UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ rated.  The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that a hat have at least a UPF rating of 30 or higher in order to provide maximum sun protection from UV rays penetrating the hat’s fabric.  The UPF 50+ rating protects the delicate skin from the sun’s piercing and harsh UV rays by 97.5%.  My Catalina Hat Design is made of natural raffia straw and has an adjustable inner band for looser or tighter fittings; it’s also pliable enough to be rolled for storage in baggage without damaging any of the fibers.  Wearing my Catalina Hat Design while taking my walks definitely provided ample protection for my head, face and ears against any sunburn.  Walleroo Hat Company donates 1% of their annual profits to skin cancer research, education and prevention in the U.S. in support of their commitment to sun protection.  http://www.wallaroohats.com/

BEAUTY AND FASHION IN A NEW LIGHT

On August 9th, I had the pleasure of sitting in on the dress rehearsal for the fifteenth annual Chicago Macy's Glamorama, “Fashion In A New Light”.  Without a doubt, this is one of the city’s most important fashion extravaganza of the new season and most anticipated.  As a professional performer, I know all too well the importance of a dress rehearsal.  For those that had any involvement in structuring the performance, but especially the on-stage performers, show time is always a time of excitement, peppered with nerves and anticipation.  For those attending the show, dress rehearsal or not, there is always an aura of excitement, and for an event such as this, it’s THE fashion highlight for Chicago's media, sponsors and fashionistas.  www.macys.com

The palpable excitement of this show combined artistry with showmanship and also philanthropy, as a fundraiser for Ronald MacDonald House Charities.  For entertainment, there was Sheryl Crow, Cirque de Soleil, and Summer Set (winners of Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star contest).  For fashion, there were some of fashion's hottest designers, including Philosophy, Weekend Max Mara, Tommy Hilfiger, Diesel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rachel Rachel Roy, Maison Jules, and TALLIA Orange

Well-scripted, rehearsed and executed, the visuals for each exciting fashion segment were carefully choreographed to spotlight fashion’s hottest trends.  The use of lighting, where colors changed dramatically within each segment, underscored the show’s theme “Fashion In A New Light” by transforming individual looks into personalities of their own.  The show was a feast for the eyes with a rapid tempo that never dragged and kept you wanting more.

While the show's costumes were the designer fashions and the main attraction, noted Lancôme National Makeup Artist Alex Sanchez performed his makeup wizardry by bringing each designer's outfit to life with flawless looks in the season's latest and greatest colors.  He and his crew turned out some of the most exquisite looks for the show by using iconic Lancôme Paris Cosmetics.  The color palates and finished looks beautifully accentuated each individual designer fashion segment, emphasizing the show's theme.  While each designer fashion represented individuality, so too did the Lancôme Paris colors, which were transformed from subtle to intense, natural to glam.

Before the start of the dress rehearsal, I had a few moments to chat with Alex Sanchez backstage and what I took away from our time together was his incredible passion for art and architecture, especially design elements of form, function and beauty.  This passion was apparent in the variety of looks he created throughout the designer segments.  The gamut ran from unstructured, casual, funky, classic, dressy to tailored.  Adapting makeup to a "look" is key in how one develops that "look", no matter the clothes or label.  Beauty is universal and lies in how one perceives it.  A person must feel "dressed" in their own skin.  Like any work of art, a clean canvas is key and when dealing with the application of makeup to the skin, it is critical that the individual maintains a skincare regimen that maintains their "canvas" in a healthy condition.  As I’ve written so many times before, it’s great getting validation from someone like Alex Sanchez.  Good skincare is indeed the basis for all great looks.

I also had a chance to try some of the new Lancôme Paris colors and test how easily they went on, how easy it was to take the colors from a natural and subtle look, to an intense glam look; I was also interested in seeing the endurance or staying power of the colors and to see if there was any fade.   For the eyes, there were two palate compacts; Hynose Star 'It Accessories (Midnight Rush) and the other in browns, Hynose Drama 'It Accessories' (Taupe Craze); both all-in-one color compacts included base, lid, crease, highlighter and liner/contour colors.  Ease of application was wonderful and pulled double duty, dry or wet; staying power was favorable and I loved the ability to be subtle or intense with the applications; the browns especially flattered my fair skin tone.

For thick lashes, there was Hynose Drama Mascara (black); sometimes it clumped and I had to separate the one in blues, lashes, but the look was intense and lashes appeared fuller and longer.  For the cheeks, there's Blush Subtl (Cedar Rose); used sparingly, this color accentuated my cheeks beautifully; the loved the brush, which had a luxurious feel to it.  For the lips, there was Gloss In Love (Peach Show) and Rouge In Love lipstick (Soft Peach); application was easy and colors went on smoothly without smudging or feathering; the lipstick went on first, followed by an application of the gloss, which intensified the colors, while maintaining the natural subtlety of the colors.

Lastly, there was an intense True Red Vernis In Love nail color, which I didn't get around to trying, but when I do, more than likely it'll be on my tosies; there’s nothing like having red nail lacquer on the toes to glam-up the peds!  To see the entire line of beautiful colors, go to http://www.lancome-usa.com

The beautiful Lancôme Paris colors made the fashions looks in the show come to life, and while I'll never be a fashion model, at least I can wear beautiful colors inspired by fashion on my perfectly maintained skin.  In closing, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the performances by Cirque de Soleil, Cheryl Crow and Summer Set at the dress rehearsal.  Cirque's Mystere was well represented with the phenomenal talents and body-perfect athletes, whose ballet movements were a marvel to watch.  The musical numbers of both Cheryl Crow and Summer Set were obliterated by too heavy a bass that should've been adjusted by the sound engineers as the dress rehearsal progressed; it was disappointing to lose out of these acts and their respective performances by not being able to hear a truly balanced representation of each musical group's harmony and solo bits; even portions of the music in Cirque's presentation were obliterated.  I realize that it was the dress rehearsal, but in every dress rehearsal I’ve performed in, sound, lighting, blocking, script and movement were always adjusted as it was occurring if it was off even a miniscule amount.  I hope that the necessary sound adjustments were made in time for the actual show, which was later that evening, so those in attendance had a much better appreciation for the individual talents of each group.

In closing, always remember that being fashionable is enjoying the skin you're in and not being affected by someone else and what they look like or what they’re wearing.  Dress for yourself and enjoy whatever you wear and whatever look you’re going for that defines your individuality and uniqueness.  That is part of real beauty.

That's it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.
