ESPA International
~ The iconic spa brand’s founder and CEO, Susan Harmsworth, received a unique honor by being recognized for her outstanding services and tireless commitment to the spa and beauty industry during the U.K.’s recent 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honors. Ms. Harmsworth now holds the title of Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or MBE. For more information, visit http://www.espaonline.com/.

Gehwol ~ The long-established and innovator of foot-health products and care, is now offering its therapeutic mani and pedi treatments, using their extensive line of products, at the exquisite The Spa at Trump SoHo. Guests of The Spa will be able to purchase these iconic products, or find them in their rooms as in-room amenities. Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur, India ~ To commemorate the opening of India’s first ESPA, the luxury hotel and spa is offering a “Spa Divine@The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur” package that includes airport transfers, accommodations, meals and spa treatments; the special package runs through September 30, 2010. Rates are based on double occupancy, minimum of two-night stay, and begin at $375.00 per person. The spa is set among a grove of flowering guava trees, where traditional European and Ayurvedic-based treatment therapies are administered in nine historically designed Rajasthani tents (some include over-sized marble soaking tubs). For more information, visit http://www.theleela.com/.

MUD (Make-Up Designory) ~ The name behind the iconic brand of beautiful cosmetics, tools and two teaching academies (LA and NYC), can add to its list of accolades a continuing partnership with cable television’s hit reality show, “She’s Got the Look” (TV Land). The MUD partnership is now in its third season and the glam look behind the show’s runway hopefuls. For more information, visit http://mudshop.com/ and http://mud.edu/School-Site-2010/.

Spa Chakra ~ After much hoopla and fanfare with the Waldorf-Astoria Corporation, Guerlain and Spa Chakra launching the new luxury brand, Spa Chakra, in the Fall of 1998, troubled times kept biting them on their proverbial backside. And, having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last December 2009, hope abounded when private investment firm Hercules Technology Growth completed the acquisition of the troubled luxury brand in March 2010, with promises of growth and expansion. Then, without any warning, the doors were abruptly closed on August 20th, leaving fifteen worldwide Spa Chakra luxury branded spas up for grabs, not too mention all of the staff, spa faithful and gift certificate holders. Hotels where these spas were located are scrambling to try and work out details on space retention and continue spa operations, but under different and individual names. I’m sure there are many legal hurdles to overcome given the complexity of the asset assumption and ceasing of operations. Hmmmm, wonder what happens to all that inventory of equipment, products, etc.? A distress sale, perhaps? I digress…..the Conrad Indianapolis will retain their spa facility and operations, and will open in the Fall under a yet to be disclosed name. Besides the Conrad Indianapolis, some of the other shuttered Spa Chakra doors include the Palmer House Hilton Chicago, W Retreat & Spa Vieques Island and the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey. The short-lived and storied Spa Chakra had its roots with the luxe brand Guerlain. The Guerlain Spa at the tony Waldorf Astoria is also shuttered, since they were part of the brand. Tough times. Sad to see a spa fade like this. Too much drama. Stay tuned for more developments. I’d give a reference website, but that isn’t viable, either.

Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour, UK ~ The luxury hotel brand has announced the opening of The Blue Harbour Spa, which will feature specialized treatments for “mums-to-be” and an indulgent signature treatment, the Melt Massage, which involves a melted heady-scented massage oil candle that’s dripped all over the body as part of a seventy-five minute body massage. Men aren’t being overlooked and will an extensive list of treatments to soothe their savagery and release manly stresses. Rounding out the spa’s focus on well-being, the area will also include a twenty-four hour fitness area, steam, sauna and a sizeable seventeen meter pool (nearly fifty-six feet in length), complete with soothing “swan’s neck hydro faucets and jets. ~ OF THINGS ESTHETIC AND AROMATHERAPEUTIC ~

FACE

Amrit Organics Spa Specifics ~ Another product line I’ve heard great things about in the world of “organics” and “spa”, but hadn’t ever tried any of them until now. I was slightly hesitant trying products that were “oil” in the dead of the dog days of summer; heat and humidity, which I hate, didn’t seem like a good fit. When I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I tried the Golden Nutrient Serum and Eye Serum Roll-On. The beauty behind this brand and especially these products is that there aren’t any synthetics, chemicals, additives or preservatives. The Golden Nutrient Serum is based on their signature blend of organic sunflower, jojoba, and olive oils, natural vitamin E, organic essential oils of lavender, lemongrass and rose geranium. If you’ve been reading my articles on a regular basis (since the mid1990s), you’ll know that I have a passion for using products that are aromatherapeutic. Just look at the list of organic essential oils in this product and you’ll appreciate why I was enthralled using the product. But a great aroma doesn’t equate to an effective product. In this case, however, it does. In addition to these scrumptious aromatherapeutic essential oils, the three organic oils combine to become super-hydrators, delivering antioxidants to the skin, while helping to brighten skin tone, combat aging and rejuvenate. Used sparingly, I preferred using this for my night regimen. The Eye Serum’s applicator seemed a bit unusual, since I’ve never seen a “roll-on” as the delivery component for this type of product; but it’s a very logical design, not too mention extremely hygienic. I loved on easy the roller dispensed just the right amount of treatment serum to the under eye area; I didn’t even need to tap it into the skin; it absorbed without any irritation and like the face serum, hydrated well, minimized fine wrinkles and left no greasy residue. The Eye Serum’s ingredients include organic jojoba oil, organic freeze-dried aloe vera and organic chamomile. Simple, pure ingredients that deliver results. For more information, visit http://www.redcherrygroup.com/.

Bambola Beauty ~ This new eco-conscious skincare line includes a full-range of natural and organic-based products. I tried their Hydrating Eye Gel. Key ingredients include aloe (hydrates), arnica (diminishes discoloration), green tea extract (plumps, anti-aging properties) and Mannentake mushrooms (vitamins A, B. B2, and C, which nourishes and promotes smoother and firmer skin in the delicate eye area). The product absorbed quickly, left no residue and gently hydrated. For more information, visit http://www.bambolabeauty.com/.

ESPA ~ I’ve never had the opportunity to experience any of these products until now. ESPA Floral Spafresh Spritzer and ESPA 24 Hour Balancing Complex were two exceptional hot weather weapons in combating the onslaught of heat and humidity, which I don’t tolerate too well. The Floral Spafresh not only was a lovely toner post-cleansing routine, it was also soothing; this non-alcohol product was also refreshing and uplifting; its delicious aroma added to the enjoyment of using the product; some of the aromatherapeutic ingredients included rosewater, neroli and tangerine oil. The product was ideal for my sensitive skin, was non-irritating, and lightweight; it provided effective all-day hydration. I also used it throughout the day as a refresher and pick-me-up. The Balancing Complex was also ideal for my sensitive skin and helped stave off my face from perspiring due to the heat; it seemed to add a delicate, but effective barrier to my skin; my skin felt silky smooth to the touch; the texture of the product was silky, and left no residue, and was quickly absorbed. The product is recommended for sensitive or dry skin and is well suited as an anti-aging moisturizer. Some of the high-performing ingredients in this wonderful product included evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil, myrrh and rose geranium oil, as well as coconut, jojoba, and frankincense; with all of these aromatherapeutic properties, it’s no wonder why I also loved its delicious aroma. For more information, visit http://www.espaonline.com/spa-products/.

Fleur’s ~ Fleur’s has launched a brand new product, Sérum Hydratant Absolu )Absolute Moisturizing Serum). A key ingredient is the floral essence of the blue orchid, which is prized for its inherent moisturizing, anti-aging, antioxidant and softening properties. Other key ingredients in this exceptional product include shea butter, known for restructuring and moisturizing; grapefruit seed extract, known for its fruit astringent properties, which regulate sebum production and staves off blackheads; and wheat germ, soy, and sunflower plant oils (all rich in vitamin F and essential fatty acids), which help to reduce water retention, retain ceramides, while reinforcing cellular content. This is product’s aroma is divine, with a heady scent of orchid. It glides on with its lightweight and silky texture, and is quickly absorbed; applied morning and evening, it can be used alone, or as a “booster” underneath preferred moisturizer. I found it performed wonderfully without the addition of moisturizer and left my skin feeling hydrated, while improving the overall texture and adding subtle radiance. I thoroughly enjoyed using this aromatherapeutic product. For more information, visit http://www.fleur-s.com/en/s01_home/s01p01_home.php.

Skin 2 Skin ~ Here’s another brand of highly regarded natural and organic products that are advanced with scientific properties in its ingredient profile. I refer to them as cosmeceuticals because of the advanced scientific components, particular for anti-aging. I generally avoid these types of products, because my occasionally reactive skin, well, reacts negatively to some of the ingredients. Unfortunately, a few of their products didn’t fair too well on my skin. Products I tried included White Tea Anti-Aging Face Wash, Oatmeal & Pomegranate Face Scrub, Anti-Aging Renewal Serum, Aging Intervention Cream, Un-Wrinkle Forehead & Crow’s Feet Cream, and Anti-Aging Revitalizing Eye Gel. With the exception of the Renewal Serum and Intervention Cream, all other products performed better than anticipated; they were gentle, non-irritating, favorably consistencies, quickly absorbed, left no greasy or tacky residue, and had a pleasant aroma. My favorite products included the Face Wash, Face Scrub, and Eye Gel. Although I did try the Un-Wrinkle product, fortunately, I don’t have crow’s feet or deep-set wrinkles; still the product gave a nice level of hydration to those targeted areas. Initially, the Intervention Cream (alpha lipoic acid, dermaxyl, and vitamins A, C and E) worked very well in maximizing my hydration levels, until I noticed irritation and drying around my nose area after a two-week period; I discontinued its use. I had almost immediate irritation and stinging in the eyes when using the Renewal Serum (17% matrixyl) on targeted areas, like the forehead and the nasal labial folds; since its 17% concentration of matrixyl represents the maximum percentage, this product is probably best left in the hands of a qualified esthetician, which I’m not. Matrixyl treats wrinkles while repairing the dermal matrix and is an alternative to retinol and vitamin C; it stimulates cellular production of collagen and improves the tissue; clearly, this ingredient represents the latest advancement in anti-aging ingredients. I tried to understand a research paper on the science behind this advanced peptide; the research results were difficult to appreciate, let alone comprehend, because it was science-speak; I even had a major flashback to chemistry classes; it wasn’t a pleasant memory, reminding me of my geeky years; but, I digress….Another product I tried was the Light Tint Photoaging SPF 30 Moisturizing Cream; unfortunately, even though it was a Light Tint, it was too dark for my fair skin and I didn’t want to walk around looking like I was either late for a theatrical performance, or something else; still, consistency was creamy thanks to the jojoba and shea butter ingredients. For more information, visit http://www.skin2skincare.com/.

TALIKA ~ The authority in lash care since 1948 has set a new standard. TALIKA has improved its original LIPOCILS product, making it even more effective, with the introduction of LIPOCILS EXPERT. Enriched with silk proteins and 12 plant extracts, including nettle, hamamelis and apple, clinical trials resulted with some participants experiencing up to a 36% lash growth, and an increase in color of up to 50% on participants with light-colored lashes; these results were documented after a twenty-eight day trial, involving a twice daily application of the product. Lashes are also conditioned and less brittle, eliminating “fall out”. TALIKA EXPERT’s unique dual applicator wand has a tip for applying the gel to the lash roots, as well as a brush to maximize even gel distribution to lashes. Growth is stimulated and lashes are treated. In using the product, I found that it delivered. My pale puny lashes became slightly darker, thicker and definitely more conditioned and healthier to the touch, and weren’t brittle to the touch; I also noticed a slight curl to my lashes. For more information, visit http://www.talika.com/.

ZENSATION Sense of Luxury
~ This Swiss company promises products that are based with natural and organic ingredients, which deliver results. Not being familiar with this brand, I tried one of their multi-tasking products, Radiance Brightening Cleansing Cream. Not only did the product thoroughly and gently clean and remove my makeup effortlessly, its creamy texture also hydrated and brightened my skin as well. Some of the product ingredients include mulberry root, grape and sarmentosa extracts, known for their skin brightening properties, rose flower oil, rose flower water, and vitamin E. I enjoyed using this product. Its creamy texture was rich and rinsed off easily without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; the subtle scent of Damask rose added to the pleasure of using the product; skin felt thoroughly cleansed, hydrated, with a very silky texture. For more information, visit http://www.zensationbeaute.com/.

OTHER BODY PARTS

Gehwol
~ Since 1882, Gehwol products initially began treating and tending to feet, but through its success and technological advances, have included a product range that addresses problems with hands and nails. Behind the success and endurance of this company was Eduard Gerlach, a German pharmacist, who is credited with opening the first-ever drugstore in 1868 in the region of Westphalia. He would also be regarded as the pioneer in modern foot care, after successfully introducing the first-ever commercially manufactured medical cream for treating and alleviating foot conditions. Although I was vaguely familiar with the company, I never had an opportunity to try the products, until now. I tried the Gehwol Med Callus Cream for feet and Gerlan Hand Cream. The Callus Cream promises removal of stubborn calluses with a twice daily application within twenty-eight days or less restores affected area to normal. I was amazed when I noticed initial results occurring within hours and only after the initial application, it was remarkable. The Callus Cream’s powerful ingredients include urea, allantoin, avocado oil, glycerin, lipids and silk extracts. With regular use, problem areas become more manageable, and the stubborn callus is easily removed. I enjoyed the product’s pleasant aroma; its texture was rich and creamy, was quickly absorbed and left no greasy residue. The Hand Cream was also very effective in moisturizing and treating my hands; it was also enjoyable to use; I especially liked how it treated my dry cuticle areas and fingertips, making them soft and hydrated. Rich and emollient, this pleasantly fragranced product was quickly absorbed and left no greasy residue. Beneficial ingredients include aloe vera, jojoba oil, panthenol, and bisabolol (from German chamomile). For more information, visit http://www.gehwolonline.com/.

Karmissie
~ Although I’ve never had my eyebrows threaded, the Karmissie Threader Deluxe Kit is an impressive at-home kit for those experienced in having their brow growth thinned and shaped using this ancient method. The Kit includes an instructional CD that was very thorough, with easy to follow instructions and product demonstrations. The Kit also includes Feel Less, a de-sensitizing pre-treat lotion, Chalk for highlighting the brow hair, The Closer, a post-treat lotion that calms, soothes and inhibits breakouts (due to hair removal from its roots), and a Threader device, complete with snap-in cotton threading material. Threading removes ragged or excessive hair from the brow area, and with removal, also smoothes and polishes the skin’s surface; increased frequency of use will also make newer growth less visible and finer in texture. For more information, visit http://karmissie.com/.

Lotus Wei ~ I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing other products in this line of natural and organic whole body care, flower essences and elixirs, energy mists, and body oil. This time around, I tried some of the suite of products that with regular use, can affect one’s state of mind and especially calm and uplift. I tried the Infinite Love Flower Elixir, Energy Mist and Body Oil (Balancing Serums), which are geared towards “being kind to yourself”. The Flower Elixir is taken five times a day, 5 drops under the tongue; ingredients include vibrational flower and gem essences in a base of pure water, organic grape alcohol and glycerin; I detected a faint taste of cinnamon; very pleasant. Next came the Energy Mist, which was also refreshing and uplifting; its aroma was delicious; some of the ingredients included rose absolute, rose geranium, orchid, lemongrass, lotus, and pink magnolia; also recommended to be used five times a day; I loved it chilled. The Body Oil was also refreshing, quickly absorbed and left no greasy residue; I loved pouring some on my palms, rubbing for friction, which seemed to release more of the aromatic vapors; some of the ingredients included safflower oil, vitamin E, and those found in the Energy Mist. Other varieties include Joy Juice, Inner Peace, Quiet Mind, Inspired Action, and Pure Energy. A definite must-have to keep at arm’s reach when a lift and refresh are needed; wonderfully aromatherapeutic. For more information, visit http://www.lotuswei.com/.

Votre Vu ~ Votre Vu’s On Holiday Huiler Pour Le Corps is a lovely scented Moisturizing Body Spray that drenches the body with a formula rich in hydrating oils, including grape seed, sweet almond, apricot kernel, wheat germ and jojoba. These oils are rich in properties that not only hydrate, but also nourish and calm dry, irritated or itchy skin. On Holiday was quickly absorbed, non-greasy, and didn’t leave any residue on my skin, while noticeably leaving my skin with an improved texture and elevated levels of hydration. The combination of these benefits, plus the subtle aroma it imparted on my skin, made this product very enjoyable to use. This product is part of a series of body care products that also include a Body Scrub, Shower Gel and Body Lotion. For more information, visit http://www.votrevu.com/.

MAQUILLAGE & BEYOND

FACE atelier ~ I rarely use foundation because I find it too heavy feeling on my face, especially when it’s hot and humid outside (lately the norm in my area). I also don’t like the consistency, which seems tacky, greasy and pasty. I felt this way until I tried FACE atelier Ultra Pro Foundation; the color I tried was their #2, which complimented my fair skin tone beautifully; the product went on easily and smoothly, and covered the skin evenly, without any telltale sign I was even wearing a foundation. Behind the products effectiveness are ingredients like cylomethicone, which fills in fine lines, glycerin, which hydrates and binds moisture to the skin without any over-saturation or unwanted “dewiness”, and silicone, which inhibits forces that degrade the product (heat, cold, sweat, and water). The product is also oil and fragrance free, and non-comedogenic. I also found I didn’t need to apply any powder over the foundation; results were very natural looking. For more information, visit http://www.faceatelier.com/.

MUD (Make-Up Designory) ~ This was another brand I wasn’t familiar with, but had the pleasure of experiencing a number of their products. Whether it involved the special seasonal color palettes, such as Summer, Autumn or Holiday, the colors were exceptional and easily transitioned within color palettes and season. Each palette included an eyeshadow quad of brilliant colors and treatment lip gloss. Palette colors included Summer ~ Magnolia Lip Glaze, Dulce de Leche, Pixie, Cajun, and Sapphire eyeshadow quad, and Endless Summer bronzer; Autumn ~ Java Lip Glaze, Brownstone, Moss, Espresso, and Honeysuckle eyeshadow quad, Black Forest eye pencil, and Rose Petal blush; and Holiday ~ Cupid Lip Glaze, Tinsel, Cashmere, Voodoo, and Onyx eyeshadow quad, Vintage eye pencil, and Rose Beige blush. The products went on effortlessly, were easy to blend, didn’t fade or irritate. The colors were beautiful and could be as subtle or as intense as I wanted. I also enjoyed using their Travel Brush Kit, containing seven must-have professional applicator brushes. For more information, visit http://www.mudshop.com/.

Skindinavia ~ Skindinavia’s Cool Flash Makeup Finish not only sets makeup, but helps to cool skin surface temperature so there’s no heat degradation with makeup. The product is also heat resistant and ideal for those hot humid summer days, hot flashes, or while doing exertive activities. With its cooling mist, the product is also refreshing on those tropical days. Leaves no residue and ideal for sensitive skin (like mine). Product is also oil and paraben free. Can be applied throughout the day or evening as a refresher spritz. For more information, visit http://www.skindinavia.com/.

That’s it for this edition…until the next one…remember to take care of yourself and those around you.

GOING GREEN ~ AT-HOME ECO-CENTRICITIES ~ PART I

An extension of spa is the relevancy of wellness for self. It is no different than being environmentally conscious, because doing so fosters involvement of self for the well being of the planet. Each of us is taking on their own personal agenda to accomplish ways of being green, eco-centric, or organic. Some of this is motivated by family and our circle of friends and colleagues, or health concerns, or motivated by enlightenment through the cycle of learning and information. I recently had the pleasure of attending and spending some time at this year’s annual Home + Housewares 2010 Show (http://www.housewares.org) and National Restaurant Association Show (http://www.restaurant.org), both held at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

These trade-only mega-shows continue to be the pre-eminent shows for their respective industry. Each show attracted tens of thousands (60,000+) of attendees from across the globe, and had thousands of exhibitors (1,000-2,000) featuring the latest in industry advancements. The multi-day events were also jam-packed with educational workshops and hands-on demonstrations.

Each show also had dominant exhibition space, in the form of unique pavilions dedicated to organic, green, and sustainability. Even cooking pavilions showcased celebrity chefs whose mantras were and have always been fresh, local, organic and sustainable; many of the chefs have lived these approaches for years, and weren’t just jumping on the bandwagon because of trending or to further careers.

Each year, these two shows continue expanding their eco-friendly offerings as these categories are no longer considered a part of a niche market, but rather continue gaining momentum and going mainstream through consumer awareness and demand. The shows weren’t just about things to help make one’s home life greener, it was also about food and how the manufacturers were advancing their technologies to keep pace with the growing interest and needs of the health-savvy consumer. Consumer demand was definitely leading and even shaping many of the companies and how they were keeping pace with the growing demand levels.

There is little doubt that adopting a greener, more eco-friendly approach to living, contributes to improving the planet. The same can be said about food as it relates to health and eco-sustainability. I like taking the approach of finding solace in personal commitments to those, including myself, in trying to achieve these goals and even attempting to incrementally change things on a personal level, rather than being humiliated by the “eco-zealots” who run their lives as a clique, sanctimoniously judging others as less viable just because they’re not lock-step with doing everything that the clique deems worthy of accomplishing their biased means to their equally biased ends of eco-living. I prefer celebrating anyone who at least tries and not admonishing or even ridiculing others who don’t, something the zealots fail to grasp.

In reality, the majority of people I know are very committed to making changes in their lifestyles that are eco-friendly, but their reality is that it isn’t always financially feasible. The depressed economy has certainly contributed to a very cautious approach by many individuals who are grappling with the reality of reduced expendable income for higher-priced commodities, even if they were once in a position to spend on these types of items. Instead, they’re having to concentrate on bread and butter issues, such as putting food on their table for their families, or paying down unnecessary debt, which they probably never should have had in the first place, because maybe they’ve lost their jobs, or have lost a second income in what once was a two-income household, or any number of other reasons. In today’s economic challenges, consumers are hard-pressed in making some decisions that may be more enlightened by “some”, versus making decisions that are reality-based for their unique experience.

These individuals do in fact recognize the long-term health benefits of eating organically, for example, but are hard-pressed to have their entire grocery cart filled with the higher-priced goods sold in mass market grocery chains, which carry many organic products; and, it’s even less likely they’ll shop at cache stores like Whole Foods/Wild Oats and even Trader Joe’s, which many of these individuals categorize as elitist and snobbish. Feeding a growing family is easier to handle shopping at retail grocery chains (e.g. Safeway, Albertsons, Wynn Dixie or Kroger, or even discount stores like Centrella, IGA, Aldi, or Shop & Save).

Add to this, the growing phenomenon of the unemployed or underemployed having to rely on food pantries, where healthy food options, including fresh produce isn’t available; natural and organic food items are also a rarity. Yes, we all want to live better through healthier food choices, while also achieving making conscious choices that are good for self, family and planet. Given the protracted economic downturn, that isn’t always a reality. Still, some do make humble efforts to at least try to achieve this lofty goal. Besides, it’s better to at least try, than not to try at all.

That said, following are a few highlights of products that adapt well to the at-home spa concept of wellness, consciousness, and eco-centric. While these aren’t totally indicative of the wealth of household and foodstuff related commodities, consider that ten years ago there wouldn’t have been that many choices and what little there was, wasn’t necessarily the best tasting, or best quality. Technologies have changed, changing for the better with manufacturers, growers and suppliers listening to the consumer wanting more and better quality. So, keep talking and please give honest and non-sanctimonious input.

~ COOKING PREP ~

Proteak (http://www.proteak.com/) ~ Culled from renewable and sustainable hardwood teak forests in Mexico’s Pacific Coast on reclaimed ranch lands, the forests 8,000 acres of land is comparable in soil and the area’s precipitation to that of the traditional teak forests of Southeast Asia. The ideal climate results in over three million trees growing in this fertile natural forest. Because of these ideal growing conditions, Proteak is also able to cultivate its trees without irrigation or fertilizer. It’s truly a natural growing method and the ecological measures taken by Proteak have earned them the prestigious Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for organic timber. Proteak also has 2,000 acres of “virgin” tropical forest contingent to its forest; the company diligently maintains an ecological stewardship by protecting this additional land from deterioration or destruction; the entire eco-system is preserved and allowed to exist as nature intended. Growing these prized trees in this area eliminates the need for transoceanic transference of product to North America, which is costly, disruptive to the environment, and increases freight emissions during the transportation. And, because of the extent of acreage and planted trees, these forests are able to capture CO2 emissions, which is comparable to twenty million cars. In addition to renewing the agriculture of the area with these renewable and sustainable teak forests, Proteak also offers its workers fair wages with benefits, a rarity in this part of the world. Their replantation program further safeguards the loss of this precious natural commodity from its forests with a strategic harvesting and planting cycle that replaces with new seedlings whatever is harvested. At this point, I’m hesitatingly getting used to using one of the Cutting Boards. I say “hesitatingly” because in all honesty, it’s such a beautiful natural piece of functional art, that I’m tempted to display it, rather than use it. The beauty of these products is that depending on whether the cut of the timber is an end grain or edge grain, a natural pattern results and each one is more unique and exquisite than the next, with no two of equal cut being identical. These Cutting Boards are functional art at its best. Proteak also makes residential flooring and decking, as well as boat decking.

Starfrit (http://www.starfrit.com/) ~ This company makes some of the most inventive and practical products that are also energy-saving. I tried the MightiCan manual can opener; removes lids from the outer rim, leaving a smooth to the touch edge; a definite energy saver; when the power goes out and you want a can of beans, no worry; my older can opener model leaves sharp edges on the inside of the can or doesn’t remove the lid in a straight-through clean movement, like the one from Starfrit. I also tried the Light Cast Iron Fry Pan. Accomplished cooks know that cast iron is one of the more stable materials for heat retention and even distribution of heat; it’s also an exceptionally durable material and reduces the waste of replacement. Cast iron’s “turn-off” has always been that it’s heavy, but Starfrit found a way to maintain all the pluses in the material by reducing the overall weight by fifty-percent, and without sacrificing any of the performance aspects and practicality.

Fresh Mill (http://freshmill.com/) ~ This clever device allows for fresh picked herbs to be packed in the all-in-one compartment, then frozen and whenever the mood strikes for fresh minced herbs, all you have to do is turn the “mill” and the super-fine blades delicately shave fresh minced herbs into your finest dishes. I was mesmerized with the show demo of this clever kitchen aid. They tasted was as if they were just snipped from the garden.

~ COMESTIBLES & BEYOND ~

“The Boreal Gourmet” by Michele Genest (http://www.borealgourmet.com/about-michele/) ~ Culling from the best of the Yukon’s Boreal Forest, where hardy folks have lived off the land for hundreds of years, Chef Michele Genest has written a how-to in sustainability and organic cooking, reminiscent of the bounty and beauty this rich region has in foods and food types. The cookbook is loaded with delicious, easy to prepare healthy recipes that will make eating healthier effortless, while also providing helpful tips and guides to achieving this end. “The Olives Dessert Table” by Todd English, Paige Retus, and Sally Sampson
(http://www.toddenglish.com/) ~ A must-companion to Master Chef Todd English’s “The Olives Table” Creative cuisine that uses only the best from nature, influenced with his Mediterranean and Italian heritage. Recipes use a short list of readily available fresh and local ingredients. Guides and simply stated recipes using basic pantry ingredients render dishes that can standalone with the simplicity of tea, or as an accompaniment to dinner with the simplicity of tea. Also elevates food and cooking to an art.

Teas of Mention ~ I’m grouping a number of tea brands that fall into the broad category of organic, eco-conscious, fair trade and sustainable. These brands are all worthy of taste patronage and whether their white, green, black/fermented or herbal/tisane, I found all of them very enjoyable (n.b. I wasn't able to taste the Davidson or Rishi teas).

Republic of Tea (http://www.republicoftea.com/)
Novus Tea (http://www.novustea.com/)
Tea Forté (http://www.teaforte.com/)
Numi Tea (http://www.numitea.com/)
Primula Tea (http://www.primulatea.com/)
Mighty Leaf Tea (http://www.mightyleaf.com/)
Davidson’s Tea (http://davidsonstea.com/)
Rishi Tea (http://www.rishi-tea.com/)

Sen Cha Naturals (http://www.senchanaturals.com/) ~ I loved the Green Tea Mints, which include organic green tea, lemongrass, citrus and fresh ginger; very refreshing and addictive. Besides the Lively Lemongrass, other flavors include Original, Delicate Pear, and Morning Lychee. The health benefits of high antioxidant green tea are well documented. These Mints use Fair Trade Certified Organic Green Tea. Also available, but not tried, are Green Tea Bars, in the same flavors. The Bars are loaded with organic ingredients like roasted soybeans, pumpkin seeds, and black sesame seeds. The Bars use Fair Trade Certified Organic Green Tea, are vegan, gluten and wheat-free and also Kosher Certified.

~ SPARKLING CLEAN ~

Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Home (http://www.mrsmeyers.com/) ~ This company offers a full-range of environmentally friendly cleansing products that use essential oils, are phosphate-free and biodegradable. I tried the Liquid Dish Soap in Basil and Lavender. This product makes doing dishes by hand (look mom, no dishwasher!) less of a chore; great aromas to help the mind wander while cleaning those dirties.

EuroSpa Naturals (http://www.eurospanaturals.com/) ~ Garnering the EPA’s nod with its “Design for the Environment Program”, these liquid Hand Soaps are non-toxic, biodegradable, paraben and phalate-free and delicately scented with nature’s best; available unscented, and also lavender, vanilla, grapefruit, and orange blossom.

Fresh Wave (http://www.fresh-wave.com/) ~ Whether pet or human generated odors, these products safely get rid of those nasty odors naturally and chemical-free. Skip toxic chemical-based products, and try one of Fresh Wave’s products that neutralize odors with natural ingredients like soya and extracts of lime, pine needle, anise seed, clove and cedarwood. I tried the natural aerosol Spray, Crystal Gel, and Soy Candle; each produced favorable results in neutralizing odor residues from cooking and other unpleasant “stuff”.

Method Home (http://www.methodhome.com/) ~ Gentle but effective non-toxic cleaning products made from naturally derived surfactants and biodegradable ingredients like soy, coconut and palm oils; pleasant aromas are derived from herbs, fruits or flowers. Product range covers home, laundry and personal care. With fragrances like French lavender, cucumber, grapefruit, sea minerals, peach and green apple, the drudgery of cleaning will elevate you to a better place.

Wine Off & Coffee Off
(http://www.urineoff.com/) ~ These two new “eco-kleen” products extend the product range of the original household product, Urine Off. These latest products are definite must-haves in the green household. Formulations utilize “friendly” bacteria and natural enzymes versus harmful and toxic ingredients like chlorine and other bleaching agents to eliminate these stubborn stains, which often permanently ruin fabric. An eco-product that neutralizes stains gently and effectively with very-pleasant aromas. The manufacturing facility is also eco-conscious, using recycled water throughout and benefiting from natural light via skylights, thus cutting down on the use of powered electricity. Bio-Pro Research LLC has developed these wonderful products. In addition to their home line of eco-products, they also offer industrial eco-conscious products.

Many of you who continue reading my article posts are already familiar with my reviewing a wide variety of natural, green and organic spa-based products, including edibles and related. In the future, I’ll be bringing you more articles of this nature, since the aspect of spa and wellness are intrinsically linked to eco-consciousness. Wellness is the self and beyond, embodying all that we seek to accomplish in our lives in the hopes of making the planet a better place through our efforts. At least trying to achieve this goal is more meaningful than doing nothing, remaining idle, or immobile. It’s the little steps that add up and make a difference. Keep on trying. Keep on moving. We’re all in this together. Lastly, you can read more about the efforts these associations and companies are making in reducing their carbon foot print, recycling, outreach, fair trade, sustainability and being eco-conscious, by visiting their websites.

OF THINGS ESTHETIC, AROMATIC, CULINARY & EDIBLE

Cal a Vie Health Spa Cookbook ~ This new edition for one of the better destination spas, the Cal-a-Vie LIVING Gourmet Spa Cuisine Cookbook is a definite must-have for the foodie and spa aficionado. Not only is this cookbook great as a coffee table book with gorgeous photography of food as art, it’s also an outstanding cookbook filled with all of the healthful and mindful recipes synonymous with this award-winning wellness destination spa. I especially loved the fact that in addition to the beautifully planned menus and corresponding recipes, the cookbook is set up in two-week suggested meal plans for optimum health, vitality and nutrition. Although I’ve not had the good fortune to guest at this spa, the cookbook brings me there with its engaging recipes and words of wisdom. This cookbook is a journey of renewal and commitment in healthy and mindful eating. Just looking at the gorgeous photography will sate anyone’s appetite. More at www.cal-a-vie.com.

Danielle And Company ~ A new player in a growing and often crowded field of eco-friendly natural and organic products, this company combines the best of natural and organic ingredients that are geared towards relaxation and renewal through aromatherapy. I enjoyed experiencing products that were infused with lavender essential oil, one of my favorites. For my olfactory, the Pure Lavender Organic Beeswax & Pure Soy Candle created an aroma-therapeutic space of calm and relaxation, whether the candle was lit or not. The aroma was consistent throughout the burn, an indication of thorough oil mix and the use of higher quality essential oil. Proceeds benefit Penn State’s Honeybee Research Facility. The Pure Lavender Shea Butter Soap had a divine aroma that was consistent; cleansing and hydrating properties were favorable, but unfortunately, the soap’s consistency got mushy, even when placed on a grated holder for air circulation/drying; the organic vegetable-based soap also contains moisturizing glycerin. The calming aroma was consistent use to use. The Pure Lavender Shea Body Wash was a disappointment. Although the aroma was subtle, after rinsing off from the shower, my skin was left with an unpleasant aroma of the product’s natural cleansing agents. The product did foam and rinse well, while leaving the skin soft. A real favorite of mine was the Pure Lavender Hand & Body Lotion. This product delivered a consistent calming aroma of lavender; the natural and organic ingredients like glycerin, aloevera, and Vitamin E moisturized my dry skin; product absorbed quickly and didn’t leave a tacky or greasy residue; it was ideal for hands and body. The only non-lavender product I tried was the Pure Pomegranate Organic Lip Balm. Healing and moisturizing ingredients include almond oil, coconut oil, and Vitamin E; a subtle hint of pomegranate added to the pleasure of using this easy glide lip balm. Danielle And Company offers a variety of eco-conscience products that are gentle to planet and people. The company's web-based “Eco-Mission” further supports their commitment to being green, environmentally sustainable and eco-conscious, while promoting safe and planet-friendly research and community outreach. More at www.danielleandcompany.com.

Hillhouse Naturals ~ What better way to bring the fresh calming aromas of nature indoors than to have a variety of products with natural aromas that accessorize one’s design style, while treat and also treat and hydrate dry skin? For my olfactory, I had the pleasure of trying the Birch Diffuser Reeds; the long-lasting reeds imparted a subtle aroma that had a hint of fresh green aroma, just like the outdoors. Another way I imparted the fresh clean green of the outdoors into my indoor space was with their Olive Leaf Home Fragrance Mist. The Birch and Olive Leaf aromas complimented each other; their fresh clean green aspects were intensified delicately. I also tried two of their body lotions, Bloom Body Crème, a very subtle fresh-cut floral, and Fresh Linen Body Crème, with a subtle and crisp aroma reminiscent of how clothes smelled after being dried outdoor. The base formulas include Jojoba oil, Vitamin E and Sunflower oil, which are super moisturizers. Skin was left silky and hydrated with a subtle hint of each product’s aroma; products were quickly absorbed, without leaving any tacky or greasy residue. Both products worked great on hands and body. Hillhouse Naturals, a new favorite of mine, offers an impressive variety of personal and home care products; there’s even a line of products for the beloved family pet dog. More at http://hillhousestore.com.

Jane Iredale ~ Jane Iredale knows how to deliver dual-purpose products. Lip Fixation, a neat lip tint on one end and a yummy flavored gloss on the other end. And just in time for the glorious hues of fall, aficionados can get their Lip Fixation in Devotion, a “Sultry Coral and Shimmering Pink Gloss”, Fetish, a “Cool Plum and Delicate Lilac”, and Rapture, a “Timeless Red and Sumptuous Shine”. Sold individually, these fall must-haves are on the ready for a quick-change routine to match fall’s temperature fluctuations. Now that the lips have been taken care of, let’s focus the eyes with more great new products. Stylized eyes make any look a real wow! What better way to achieve this with more adorableness for Fall from Jane Iredale with her hypoallergenic and natural-looking Professional Faux Lashes; the handy take-with carrier stores two different sizes of individual lashes (a total of forty-eight) and comes complete with an itty-bitty tube of latex-free adhesive; the result is gorgeous lashes for the peepers. Lastly, the eyes just aren’t complete without tending to the brow department. What better way to groom and emphasize the crowning feature of the peepers than with this adorable Bitty Brow Kit. The kit comes complete with mirror, three mini-styling tools, brow color and brow wax. Really cute! More at www.janeiredale.com.

Phytomer ~ Although the word is out to not bake in the sun, regardless of how fearless of deity-like you think your tan will be, Sun Serenity Pre/Post Sun Exposure Duo is an intelligent and functional way to prep, condition and treat the delicate skin prior-to and following sun exposure. The intelligence behind these new serums includes a consistent measured application twice daily (morning and evening) of the Pre-Exposure Serum and the Post-Exposure Serum for seven days prior to sun exposure and seven days following sun exposure. The first serum conditions skin by increasing melanin production and its ability to fend off damage attributed to UV rays. The second serum repairs damaged skin cells while helping to maintain a longer lasting tan. Neither serum is meant as a substitute for additional use of an SPF product while sunning. Both products have a subtle fresh aroma; both go on easily, are quickly absorbed and don’t leave any tacky or greasy residue; I noticed that the Post-Exposure Serum had a very slight cooling sensation upon contact. This new approach for conditioning and maintaining skin’s defenses against the sun’s onslaught to delicate skin is a definite must-have for anyone planning on spending their vacation time in a sunny clime. More at www.phytomer.fr.

Skindinavia ~ As I’m writing this, it’s unseasonably hot and humid in my area, which are two things that spell disaster for anyone’s looks. I hate wearing traditional moisturizer in this type of weather since it feels too weighty. Skindinavia has come up with some wonderful alternative products for testy weather, and their latest, Weightless Summer Moisturizer, is a must-have for the season. This is a mist-able moisturizer, complete with an SPF of 8. A few mists to the skin refreshes, while skin remains hydrated throughout the day without any heavy or “greasy” feel to it; pleasant aroma; also primes the face for makeup. Great anytime, whether it’s work, workout, or play. More at www.skindinavia.com.

Xoçai The Healthy Chocolate
~ With continuing research into the health benefits of antioxidant, flavonoid and polyphenol rich dark chocolate, I thoroughly enjoyed several pieces of Xoçai The Healthy Chocolate (pronounced sho-sigh). Their dark cocoa is cold-processed, which preserves the potency of the nutrient components. The key to maximizing the benefits of dark chocolate is to slowly and methodically allow for natural dissolving, versus chomping the “candy” and swallowing it. Slowly dissolving the dark chocolate is also a moment to savor, but aids in optimum absorption into one’s system of the beneficial nutrient components. Based on various studies, dark chocolate has many health benefits, including, but not limited to, cardiovascular health, stress reduction, digestion, and immune function. Both antioxidants and flavonoids help to reduce cell destroying free radicals and improve the immune system. Fortunately, these healthy dark chocolates, when taken regularly throughout the day, make the health benefits a decadent indulgence. I only had a single serving of four of the seven formulations, Omega Square (orange), XoBiotic Square, Power Square, and Nugget; all of these four teases were delicious tasting. The line also includes the X Powerhouse Cookie, Activ (beverage) and Protein Bar. More at www.myershealthychocolate.com, or www.xocai.com.

That’s it for this edition…until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those around you.

REDUX: mySpa ~ Fairmont Chicago

I originally reviewed the Fairmont Chicago's mySpa shortly after it opened in March 2008. Its opening began a trend of new luxury spas in the Chicago-area, which has continued over these past two years, despite some of the economic challenges of what some have dubbed the “Great Recession”. Up to that point, the only luxury spas in the heart of Chicago’s Mag Mile areas were spas at the Four Seasons, Peninsula and Ritz-Carlton. In addition to the one at the Fairmont Chicago, there are now luxury spas at iconic hotels as the Trump, Elysian, Palmer House, Wit, and Dana; there’s even a standalone Kohler luxury spa in one of Chicago’s pricey suburbs, Burr Ridge.

Although the beautiful mySpa is located in the hotel’s lower area, where there aren’t any windows, the high vaulted ceilings add to an open-air feel accentuated by ceiling insets of sky blue murals, complete with cumulus clouds; even the exquisite hand blown Murano glass lighting fixtures are reminiscent of an azure blue sky; the subtle palette of colors also lends to the airy feel of nature. Throughout the area, the design is contemporary, Asian minimalist and retro inspired; the overall effect is calming and de-stressing.

The spa is 11,000 s.f. and has eight treatment rooms, including a duet suite with soaking tub and private bathroom. The hotel also offers guests in-room treatments. There’s also a Fitness Center with cardio, circuit training and weight equipment by Technogym and Precor and if needed, personal trainers are available. Guests also have access to a regular schedule of fitness classes that are offered in the Yoga Studio. There’s a well-stocked retail area of treatment products and other spa goodies for the trip home. Other guest amenities include separate steam rooms and relaxation lounges to enhance the guest experience. The spa offers a variety of massage, skin care, body care and nail therapies. Unique to mySpa are myBody Rituals, which are multi-layered sensory treatment experiences, based on indigenous healing therapies; these include Vitality, Hammam, and Nirvana. Treatment lines include Intraceuticals, beingTrue, Somme Institute, Red Flower, Essence of Vali, Body Bliss and SpaRitual.

My treatment experience was the advanced Intraceuticals Rejuvenate and Atoxelene Infusion Oxygen Facial. My experience would mark the launch of the Intraceuticals facial to the mySpa array of targeted therapeutic facial treatments.

I’ve always been tentative about getting any type of facial that uses products with the ingredient phrase “..ceuticals..”; in the past, my skin rejected these types of products because I found them consistently too strong, with too many chemical additives, and having an off-putting chemical-aroma. I’ve also been skeptical of any product lines and treatments that promise things like “instant results”, “noticeably plumper”, “lifted”, “anti-aging”, “reduction of fine lines”, blah, blah, blah. Caveat emptor, and so go on and show me; I dare you!

One thing about me is that when I’m wrong, I fess up to it. And, I was totally wrong about all of my pre-conceived ideas of the Intraceuticals line and the promises of the treatment and its immediate and noticeable results. I just love still being able to learn a few things or two at my age, but, I digress…..

My treatment began with the application of warmed towels to the face that had been infused with mySpa’s custom blend of aromatic essential oils (ylang ylang, lavender, petitgrain and sweet orange blossom). These aromas were delightful to inhale, but were also therapeutic, inducing total relaxation. Next, a scrupulous review of my skin by my esthetician (Rich) followed. He fully explained all of the various steps involved in this technological wonder, including that the treatment is non-invasive and doesn’t require any “downtime”; because of its gentle yet effective delivery system, clients won’t experience the usual sensitivity to light and won’t experience any redness or irritation. (Finally, a technologically advanced skin care line and delivery system that is ideal for folks like me with finicky and sometimes over-reactive aging skin; I digress, again…..)

The skin was scrupulously cleansed with Intraceuticals oil-free Cleansing Gel, which contains buffered salicylic acid; this was a very gentle and non-irritating product. The Clarisonic Classic, one of my favorite skincare aids, was also used in this treatment phase. Next, were the dual phase application of individual serums, Atoxelene and Rejuvenate; each was applied to the face and then followed by pressurized oxygen.

The first serum, Atoxelene, contains the powerful peptide Argireline, which relaxes and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, a safer and non-invasive alternative to painful injectables. The second serum, Rejuvenate, contains hyaluronic acid, which aids in smoothing and hydrating. The oxygen is the delivery system that advances the serums into deeper layers of the skin. The serums aided in the hydration, firming, lifting and plumping of cells. Fine lines and wrinkles were diminished, while texture was smoothed, lifted and plumped.

Once my skin was scrupulously cleansed and the therapeutic serums applied, aided by the potent oxygen delivery, the Contour Eye Gel, Hydration Gel, and Moisture Binding Cream products were applied. I also received an application of on-demand Atoxelene via the Atoxelene Wand, which is a portable wonder and can be applied to target fine lines and wrinkles anywhere and any time. All products were gentle, non-irritating, and lightweight; between the oxygen infused serums and these products, my face also felt lighter. I couldn’t believe how much healthier my skin appeared and how much more improved it appeared pre-treatment. My skin was lifted and plumper, while its texture more refined; and, the few fine lines and wrinkles I had were softened to the point that they were barely visible. It was amazing. These extraordinary results lasted a good three days, with results appearing to be cumulative and improving with each passing day.

Intraceuticals recommends a series of six consecutive weekly oxygen serum infusions, which will optimize benefits and also create a cumulative benefit; thereafter, they recommended a maintenance regimen of every six to eight weeks. For the convenience of clients, Intraceuticals provides kits of take-home products that also include the individual serums; mySpa personalizes the two serums for each client and then maintains them in a temperature controlled environment, so the individual is assured of getting their own identified serums each time they return for an oxygen serum infusion. Ideally, the products will be their most potent worked in tandem, but for those who don’t want to make a major investment, any of the products will complement others currently used in one’s regular skincare regimen.

Visiting mySpa for this special launch reminded me of their commitment to the guest experience by providing the most effective and advanced treatment protocols available. During my visit I also had a chance to chat a bit with industry veteran and mySpa Director Karen Hott, who exemplies mySpa’s mission, “…to encourage our guests to rediscover themselves. Our attention to detail, extraordinary care and service, and results-oriented experiences are designed to provide each Chicago spa guest with a sense of awakening, balance, and rest…” Also at this special launch was Gina Brooke, Makeup Artist and Intraceuticals Brand Ambassador; I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about her passion and philosophies on products and trends. I also enjoyed perusing her impressive portfolio, which included numerous cover feature clippings of some of the best known who’s-who in star-dom. (For additional expert review coverage on mySpa, refer to my September 7, 2009 archived article post, “Spa Treatments and Product Experiences-Part II”.)

ELYSIAN HOTEL SPA ~ CHICAGO’S NEWEST LUXURY HOTEL SPA

During a spate of typical Chicago winter howling winds and frigid temps, I ventured to a tony area of Chicago’s Gold Coast, just off the Mag Mile, to experience one of the area’s latest luxury spas at the gorgeous Elysian Hotel (part of The Leading Hotels of the World). As I approached the hotel and walked through the spacious wrought-iron gated driveway, I immediately felt like I was entering an Italian palazzo. It was definitely Euro-design in appearance and feel. Visually stunning, it was a stark departure from the terribly congested streets and foot traffic just outside its entry gate. And, the raucous street noise immediately dissipated. I was definitely transported to a better space.

The understated opulence continued upon entering the hotel’s lobby, where enormous Greco-Roman heads grace the lobby wall, juxtaposing contemporary with antiquity. A brief inquiry on the Spa’s location would bring me to fourth floor, where the Health Club is also located. As I left the elevator, I was struck with more impressive visuals. The Spa is approximately fourteen thousand square feet. The entry area is complemented with granite, natural stone, water features, sumptuous chairs, silk drapery, and decorative lighting fixtures that have an open contemporary style accentuated with the sense of antiquity with additional Greco-Roman heads; a male denoting the men’s lounge and a female, the women’s lounge. There are twelve spacious treatment rooms, a couple’s suite (with rain shower) and an outdoor lounge and terrace.

The Health Club focuses on Pilates and Gyrotonics, while offering its guests an array of fitness equipment for self-paced routines (treadmills, cardio and strength equipment); it also offers pre and post-natal programs. Another offering is the Elysian Complete Health Program, which has a certified personal trainer (CPT) developing fitness and nutrition programs. The CPT also guides the Health Club’s Cardio Advance Trainer sessions. Guests and locals can also avail themselves to Club Memberships.

Within the Spa area, there’s a stunning saline-based lap pool for guests to enjoy; the design feature of pink inlaid rose-shaped mosaic tiles gives guests a sense of a lull and decompression of their hectic lifestyle. In each lounge area there’s also steam, sauna, whirlpool, spacious dressing and locker space, personal amenities, plus a comfortable relaxation area, complete with libations and canapés. The men’s area includes a television, fireplace and a men’s atelier for all their grooming needs, include barber services such as a traditional straight-razor shave. The reception area includes an impressive retail boutique with treatment products used throughout the Spa, in addition to other must-have items like luxury soaps from MOR Emporium and Gianna Rose Atelier (I love both of these lines!).

The Spa offers a variety of facials, massages, body treatments, nail, hair and beauty services. Luxury brands Carita (facials and body) and Leonor Greyl (hair) are exclusively used in the Spa. For my treatment, I selected the Age Defying Facial, which was based on the signature Carita Renovateur treatment at its prestigious La Maison de Beaute, in Paris. The Spa’s version is approximately sixty-five minutes, while the Paris version is nearly two-hours. The Spa’s Age Defying Facial promises to exfoliate, polish, lift and refine skin with immediate results.

While the Spa recognizes that guests have unique needs and offers customized facials and massage treatments specific to those needs, to prepare for my facial treatment, I requested a listing of the specific Carita products that would be used during the course of my treatment. My request was graciously and promptly accommodated and a list identifying the Carita products that presumably would be used, identified that all of the products to be used during the treatment would be from Carita’s Progressif array of products. I concluded that the list represented all of the products that would be used in the treatment; I then used this advance detail to research the specific products on the manufacturer’s website in order to become better familiar with each of them. In researching the product list online, I was very impressed with the formulations and represented intended results. I felt informed and well prepared.

During the course of the treatment, I enjoyed my esthetician’s brief explanations of each treatment phase, along with the products used and their intended results; I also enjoyed how the products felt on my face; warmed towels were used instead of steam; I found it ironic that minor extractions were performed, since to me extractions were more invasive than steam; I would have preferred steam, versus any extractions, although I realize the two procedures are different. I also noted that there were some discrepancies on which products were used based on the list provided to me, in addition to additional products used in the treatment, which weren’t on the list.

With regard to the previously supplied treatment product recap, the esthetician inter-mixed the Carita Progressif treatment products along with Carita Lagoon products; when queried, the only explanation provided to me by the esthetician was that the mix was sometimes done and that the products performed the same as the other products. Because I didn’t know about the additional products that were also used, I wasn’t able to research them beforehand and have an understanding of them.

Overall, I found the treatment to be relaxing, with the only exception being an intense neck and shoulder massage during the mask phase; mentioning the intensity to my esthetician, she immediately adjusted her touch to my relief; however, some delayed discomfort surfaced several hours later and I found my neck and shoulders slightly stiff. I was also advised beforehand that my feet would be slightly massaged, along with hands and forearms; when asked about the feet being massaged, my esthetician mentioned that she never massages the feet, just the hands and forearms.

Although the results of the facial were immediately noticed and impressive, these effects were short-lived; the initial firmness and lifting dissipated in less than two-days. I wasn’t sure if this result had to do with the inter-mixing of products and how they synergistically performed with each other. My understanding with product efficacy has to do with product formulations and how they synergistically work with each other, since molecular structure often varies depending on ingredient and that product arrays were formulated to complement a single grouping and work together, versus mixing them with others outside of a specific product array.

I was unsuccessful in obtaining clarification and input from the U.S. Carita expert. I was trying to gain a better understanding about the inter-mixing of their Progressif with Lagoon specific products and their impact on this specific treatment’s short-lived efficacy that I experienced. After several follow-ups on my issues, I was eventually advised that Carita U.S. “…has to take a pass on the opportunity…”.

With that said, I was grateful to the PR agency for providing me with some Carita products to review. I was interested in reviewing products used in the treatment I had received, in the context of a guest developing an at-home regimen to continue and maintain the Age Defying Facial benefits received from the treatment. The facial products I reviewed included Carita’s Progressif Cleansing Beauty Foam (with jojoba micro-grains; this wasn’t used during the treatment), Progressif Intense Smooth Out Serum (used in the facial treatment), and Ultra-Nourishing Dry Oil 14 (with gold flecks; the non-flecked version was used in the treatment); this is a multi-purpose product that can be used on the face, hair or body; I didn’t use the gold-flecked version on my face during my home review.

The Cleansing Beauty Foam’s micro jojoba beads gently exfoliated; the product rinsed well, maintained hydration levels and didn’t leave any residue. The Smooth Out Serum was absorbed quickly and also didn’t leave any residue; it also maintained hydration levels. Both products were gentle and non-irritating; however, some may find the strong perfumy aromas of both products to be off-putting. The Dry Oil’s primary ingredient is mineral oil, which I presume is this the cosmetic-grade, which is non-comedogenic; while some might shy away from using anything with this ingredient on their face, when the non-gold flecked product was used during the treatment, I didn’t experience any adverse reaction or sensitivity, including tearing.
