TRANSITIONING INTO FALL

As I write this, the weather is finally getting cooler with lower levels of humidity; both are a welcome relief.  I’m sure there will be a few last gasps of summer over the next few weeks, but for now, I’ll revel in this seasonal break from summer.

When a season transitions into the next, such as summer to fall, we need to be mindful of the need to change and adapt virtually every aspect of our daily lives; what worked during one season generally doesn’t work in the next one; routines and regimens need to be altered.

The following transitional tips from summer into fall should help you to at least consider some of the aspects of your day-to-day lives that will require some tweaking.

~ TIPS FOR SKIN, HAIR AND MAKEUP ~

Climatological changes, including cooler and drier temps both indoor and outdoor, consider changing your skincare regimen to ramp up product efficacy.  What worked well in the warmer and more humid months will probably be inappropriate in the cooler and drier months.

Lighter weight lotions should give way to creams and butters.

Colder, drier air will dehydrate the skin.  Skin still requires periodic exfoliation with some type of moisturizing soaps or cleansers.  Skin needs to be moisturized and rehydrated to replenish depleted moisture levels and also to maintain a healthy mantel of skin.

Don’t over-exfoliate the skin; when skin is dry and aggressive exfoliation is done, it can harm the delicate tissue and irritate it.  Make sure to use serums and don’t discount the wonders of face oils (e.g. olive, almond, coconut, palm, jojoba, argan, marula, shea, cocoa, etc.).

Continue using an SPF product to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Adjust your hair care regimen and the products used.  Since the air is dryer and less humid, it’s important to nurture your hair with the proper shampoos, conditioners and restorative masks to avoid damaging and drying out the scalp, hair follicle and hair shaft.

Lighten up your color palette, whether that’s in your makeup colors, or the colors of your wardrobe pieces.

Pale and light may have been great for the summer months to deflect the harsh rays of summer sun, however, an earthy color palette of burnished and vibrantly intense colors of fall, are more suitable.

A fashion trend this year red lipstick, which adds a vibrant pop of color to the face.  Every skin tone looks good wearing red lipstick, but make sure it’s in the correct family of red to complement your skin tone ~ blue-red or orange-red, with varying hues in each family.

Lighter weight cotton, linen or gauzy material should be replaced with warmer wool, silk blends and heavier cotton and linen fabrics to keep the body heat in as an insulator from the cold.  Vibrant colors for fabrics to suit the season are always a fashion-must.

~ TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING AND LIFESTYLE ~

Summer dining generally equates to lighter food fare, like salads, seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbal iced teas, iced fruit infused waters, etc.  These were ideal for summer, because they were less taxing on the digestive system, and also kept a person cool.

The colder months of fall and winter call for heartier foods like hot cereals, stews, soups, casseroles and the like are ideal for those colder months.  These foods are nutritious, but also warming.  Consider more dried fruits and nuts and make your own granola.

Consider frozen fruits and vegetables, which are quick frozen right after harvesting, preserving more of the nutrient value; they’re a nice reminder of the fresher seasonal produce during the warming months.

Seasonal constants include maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  This includes sufficient amounts of water for hydration, sleep to rest and recuperate, physical exercise for strength and agility, and proper nutrition to stave off illness.

~ TIPS FOR WELL BEING ~

Consider gathering up dried twigs, branches, leaves, etc. and creating an arrangement for a seasonal tablescape, or put them in a large basket and display by your entry.

If the colder weather, and shorter days are giving you cabin fever, be sure to keep the spring and summer indoor with live plants and flowers.

Take walks to shake the “blues” away and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you; there is beauty in the changing of all-things nature.

Don’t forget to open your windows every so often just to let some fresh air inside.

~ TIPS FOR SEASONAL TRANSITIONING ~

Consider making lists of warm weather tasks and cold weather tasks.  These can include goals in skincare and body care regimens, meal planning, wardrobe, fitness routines, etc.  Then, compare each list to the other to streamline or adjust for your next seasonal transitioning.

~ END GAME ~

Every season brings a fresh start and new beginning.  It is up to each individual to seek what works best for them and which will enhance and enrich their daily lives.  The circle of life is also the circle of seasons.

That's it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN…BACK TO FALL

Do you hear the scrunching of fallen leaves as you walk on them?  Do you smell the smoke of burning leaves or fireplace logs that permeate the air?  Can you see your breath as you exhale in the chilly crisp air?  Can you taste the juicy goodness of that first caramel apple as you bite into it?  Okay, maybe it’s still a bit early for all of that, after all, in the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox (a.k.a. the first day of fall) doesn’t officially begin until September 22 at 10:49 A.M. EDT.

As I write this, the week’s temps forecast in my area will be in the mid to upper eighties, with high humidity.  I’m sure you’re still walking around in flip-flops and slathering on the sunblock, hoping to squeeze a little more out of the waning summer before fall finally brings you back to reality. Be that as it may, summer still lingers for a few more weeks.

My last two articles offered a variety of product reviews that were ideal for summer, but would also transition nicely into fall.  In this edition, I continue that theme and present a few more product reviews for your consideration.  These are also ideal products to pack in your bags for your daily routines or those last minute getaway weekends.  Enjoy reading about these products, and don’t forget to visit their websites.

~ FACE, BODY AND BEYOND ~
Auspect MD Collection ~ Australia’s number one selling cosmeceutical skincare line for eighteen years is now available in the U.S.  The formulations are based on the latest skincare technology that combines the best of nature and science to treat the skin gently and restoratively.  The products I tried included their Pro Clean Daily Facial Cleanser, X-fol-ator Exfoliating Serum, Pro-C Skin Brightening Serum and Resveratrol Pro Daily Moisture.  The Cleanser was gentle and eliminated surface dirt effortlessly and left skin feeling hydrated; the slight fruity aroma wasn’t too overpowering.  The Exfoliating Serum is another gentle product that exfoliates the skin with AHA technology and without assaulting the delicate tissue; skin felt hydrated and very clean.  The Brightening Serum not only protects the skin from the sun’s harmful rays, it also aids in eliminating hyperpigmentation over prolonged use; contains vitamin C, peptides for collagen production and antioxidants.  The Daily Moisture had a subtle tint and when applied, appeared to even-out my skin tone.  It’s mousse-like consistency was light and airy and didn’t weigh heavily on my skin; was quickly absorbed, without leaving any residue; the anti-aging wonder ingredient, Resveratrol, an antioxidant, is a key ingredient to this treatment product; peptides also help to stimulate collagen production.  With the exception of the Daily Moisture, all the other products had a fruity aroma, which fortunately quickly dissipated after product use (I’m not a fan of fruity aromas in my skincare products). http://www.auspectmd.com/

Comodynes ~ If you experience tired, jet-lagged or burning-the-midnight-oil skin Beauty-Flash Lifting Effect is just what you need fresh and lift lackluster skin.  A spritz or two on the face will give you an instant and firming lift to tired skin.  Using firming and toning plant extracts, the product also sets makeup for up to eight hours.   Key ingredients include mushroom extract and oat extract; non-drying and non-irritating; the aroma was subtle. http://www.comodynes.net/

Crabtree & Evelyn ~ The newest fragrance line, Himalayan Blue is exquisite and sophisticated.  Formulated with the prized and elusive Himalayan Blue Poppy, each product is an aromatherapeutic discovery and an adventure in luxury.  The Himalayan Blue Eau de Toilette Spray has top notes of blue poppy, smoked black tea, warm ginger and golden champaca, with base notes and dry down of patchouli and exotic woods.  The aroma is subtle, complex and heady, but not over-powering.   The Bath & Shower Gel is also infused with the same aromatic formula base as the Himalayan Blue Eau de Toilette Spray, plus the added benefits of incredibly gentle and hydrating cleansing properties; leaves a beautifully subtle veil of aroma to the hydrated skin.  Both products were outstanding. http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/

Olivia Garden ~ Known for their innovative hair care tools, the latest NanoThermic Brush makes styling effortless.  Overall design is lightweight with a soft-grip handle; the wavy configured bristles are also soft and help to conduct heat more evenly, eliminating hot spots.  The open barrel design allows for quicker drying and styling; bristles deliver hydrating Tourmaline Ion Technology to the scalp, maintaining scalp’s moisture mantel, while adding vibrancy and luster. http://www.oliviagarden.com/

Shea Moisture ~ Lavender & Wild Orchid Shea Butter Soap and Organic Lemongrass & Ginger Body Scrub with Orange Peel make bath time luxury-time and deliver functional therapy naturally.  Key ingredients in the Lavender & Wild Orchid Shea Butter Soap include African shea butter, lavender oil, calendula flower, vitamin E, and coconut and palm cleansing agents.  Left my skin hydrated; product was non-irritating and had a lovely aroma.  Key ingredients in the Organic Lemongrass & Ginger Body Scrub with Orange Peel include shea butter, cocoa seed butter, mango seed butter, olive oil, lemongrass oil, sugar, orange peel, tea tree oil, ginger root, ginger oil, vitamin E, and honeysuckle flower extract.  This product exfoliated thoroughly and gently, without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; the aromas were crisp and fresh and made for an exceptionally pleasant bathing experience; it was aromatherapeutic.  Products use all natural ingredients; no animal testing was done. http://www.sheamoisture.com/

~ NATURAL, ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE ~
Back to the Roots ~ I first saw the Mushroom Kit at Chicago’s International Housewares Show this past March.  Since then, this grow-your-own-mushrooms-at-home kit has been a huge hit.  The growing medium is made from recycled and sanitized coffee grounds, making this a natural and sustainable way to grow quickly up to a 1.5 pounds of fresh and delicious tasting Pearl Oyster Mushrooms.  The Kit comes with growing medium, grow bag, grow box, fine mister and instructions.  This is a great product for kids and adults and gives a wonderful sense of satisfaction knowing that something was grown from your own hands.  Home grown Pearl Oyster Mushrooms are delicious and low calorie.  I enjoyed the product and especially enjoyed watching them grow; the daily growth spurts were incredible; I also enjoyed how the Mushrooms tasted.  After tasting these, I’ve concluded that conventionally grown mushrooms are inferior in quality and taste to these. http://www.backtotheroots.com/

Little Duck Organics ~ Just right for tiny chubby hands just learning how to pick up and plop in their tiny little mouths little food bites.  Parents will be happy to know that there’s a healthy fruit snack alternative that’s all natural, organic and hasn’t any added sugar.  The Strawberry & Mango Tiny Fruits and Pineapple & Mango Tiny Fruits are delicious, although I found the Strawberry & Mango to be a bit on the tart and puckery side because of the strawberry bits; the Pineapple & Mango variety had just the right amount of sweetness; the texture is soft and just right for teething toddlers.  A great snack for kids of all age. http://littleduckorganics.com/

Pura ~ If you want to do your part for the environment, then consider the Kiki Bottle, Silicone Sleeve and Stainless Steel Bottle.  For adults, there’s the all Stainless Steel Bottle, which is reusable and naturally acts as an insulator to keep beverages hot or cold.  For the tiny ones, there’s 100% plastic-free bottle, the Kiki Bottle which is made of unbreakable stainless steel, and free of glass or BPA laden plastic; comes with a non-plastic, medical-grade silicone nipple and silicone travel cover.  Another ideal product for the tiny ones is a 100% Silicone Sleeve that covers most standard glass bottles; easy grip, and free of plastic and BPA; non-toxic.  Protects the purity of the container ingredients, so there’s no worry about leaching from toxic chemical found in traditional BPA plastic containers.  All products come in a variety of colors.

Thermal Aid ~ Thermal Aid offers the latest in naturally and effectively treating aches and pains, or relieving swelling.  For adults, there are the 100% Natural Heating & Cooling Pack, which comes in different sizes, depending on the area of relief being sought.  Then, for the tiny ones who also need soothing relief and comfort, there’s the adorable 100% Natural Bear, which comes in a variety of colors.  The key ingredient in both products is a heating/cooling element made of bio-engineered corn that has had any properties removed from the kernel that form mold and fungi; the result is a natural core element that can be heated or cooled, depending on the medical relief being sought; retains its temperature for longer periods of time; the outer fabric is 100% natural cotton. http://thermal-aid.com/

~ HEALTHY DINING ~
Troquet Neighborhood French Bar By LM ~ This favorite Chicago neighborhood restaurant offers fresh and local food fare that changes daily.  The day I stopped in for lunch, my server assisted me in making a few choices; I enjoyed a delicious cheese plate accented served with apricot jam and a fresh made baguette.  I also enjoyed the cold carrot and ginger soup and a delicious entrĂ©e salad of arugula, mixed greens, grilled chicken breast, wine poached pairs, orange segments dressed with a delicate orange vinaigrette; both the extensive wine list and dessert offerings were tempting, but I exercised restraint and took a pass on both. Troquet didn’t disappoint and is definitely a place where culinary creativity and freshness are paramount.  While this particular restaurant might not be in your area, do consider checking your area for similar restaurants that serve freshly prepared food fare that’s healthy and more than likely delicious tasting; sometimes a smaller establishment with a smaller limited menu offerings often translates to higher quality service and food fare. http://lmrestaurant.com/

SUMMER'S SIZZLE CONTINUES

There’s nearly six weeks left to summer, and while temps might not be cooling down as fast as many would like, including myself, many areas are still experiencing extremely hot temps.  Summer’s sizzle remains strong.  If you’re one of those watching your calendar, the Northern Hemisphere won’t officially welcome fall until the Autumnal Equinox on September 22nd at 10:49AM EDT.  Only then will summer officially be over.  That being said, there’s still plenty of beach time and tanning time left to enjoy summer’s continuing sizzle.  With that in mind, following are my latest reviews of products ideally suited for incorporating into your waning days of summer, which will also transition nicely into fall.

California Footwear Company ~ You don’t need to live in California to fall in love with the Hermosa Spa Sandal design in White Floral.  One of the company’s founders is a former Birkenstock executive whose influence in the design is apparent.  The soft foot bed naturally conforms to the foot’s contour without distorting it and offers maximize support; it’s extremely comfortable to wear; the toe loop and easy to adjust straps are a big plus for me and the breezy design screams summer.  I also liked the knobby pattern throughout the foot bed, which stimulated the feet at key reflexology pressure points. http://www.californiafootwearco.com
DNAEGF Renewal ~ DNA Defense SPF 30+ and DNA Intensive Renewal are perfect take with products for the gym bag or beach bag.  The DNA Defense SPF 30+ not only protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB light, it also doesn’t leave a white or chalky residue like other comparable products; it absorbs quickly, without leaving any tacky residue; it’s also gentle and non-irritating; active ingredients include zinc oxide and vitamins E and A.  The DNA Intensive Renewal is an ideal product to use in the evening after a day in the sun and on a freshly cleansed face; it also absorbs quickly without leaving any tacky residue; it’s also gentle and non-irritating; the product also contributes to firming and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles; a few of the key ingredients include DNA repair enzymes, hibiscus peptide and rapeseed sterols. http://www.dnaegfrenewal.com

Feed My Skin ~ Aloe Push-Up, Pumpkin Peel Masque and Strawberry Scrub In A Tub are a fun additions to face and body care.  With summer’s heat and humidity, these products add welcome relief to the heated skin surface. The Aloe Push-Up is kept frozen at all times and when cooling relief is desperately needed, especially after sunning, apply the product all over the face to heal and cool in one step.  While the Pumpkin Peel Masque may make you think of fall, chilling it before using it is a great way to prime the skin before giving it a deep cleaning.  To really cool off, the chilled Strawberry Scrub In A Tub is ideal; gentle and effective in sloughing off the dry skin cells, while cooling down the surface temperature of the skin.  All products are made by hand in small batches and use fresh and natural ingredients. http://feedmyskin.com

Fiafini Skincare ~ Delicate Cleansing Emulsion, Divine Hydration Moisturizer and Deluxe Anti-Aging Eye Cream is one of the first product lines I’ve tried that truly is for any skin type, regardless of its range.  The key ingredient in these products is South African Marula Oil, which is hand harvested; it is prized for its hydrating and humectant qualities, anti-aging and healing properties; it is naturally high in anti-oxidant levels that fight damaging free radicals.  The products were all gentle, absorbed quickly and didn’t leave any tacky residue; they were also non-irritating.  In addition to Marula Oil, other key ingredients include prickly pear, evening primrose, avocado, vitamin E, chamomile, licorice and apple seed stem cells.  Hydration levels were maintained throughout the trial period and I noticed firmness and luminosity; fine lines and wrinkles appeared diminished.  All products are free of mineral oil, parabens, fragrance and alcohol and aren’t tested on animals. http://www.fiafini.com

Ilike Organic Skin Care ~ Stonecrop Toner turned out to be my favorite go-to products during the torrid heat waves my area has experienced since June.  Not only was this product calming, but it also soothed and cooled my heated skin; it also provided refreshing hydration and was never drying; it can also be used as a gentle skin cleanser; some of the key ingredients included stonecrop, aloe, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, enzymes, mineral salts and plant protein. http://szepelet.com

L.A. Christine ~ No3 Berry Face Oil is magic in a bottle.  This formulation contains some of the richest anti-oxidant berries that are also rich in Omega fatty acids, known for the anti-aging properties; included is the Scandinavian Lingonberry, the Brazilian Açai Berry and the Raspberry.  Along with these three Ă¼ber berry extracts, a delivery system of sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, and vitamin E make for an intensely hydrating, replenishing and nurturing Face Oil.  Highly concentrated, very little is needed to apply to the face; product was quickly absorbed and didn’t leave any tacky residue; the lovely natural aroma was very pleasant; noticeably improvement to hydration levels, firmness and elasticity; fine lines and wrinkles were diminished. http://www.lachristine.com

Moroccanoil Body ~ Body Buff, Cleansing Bar, Body SoufflĂ©, Intensive Hydrating Treatment and Hand Cream are the latest product offerings from this phenomenal company, which revolutionized hair care with its nourishing and restorative argan oil treatment products.  These latest new body care products expand the company’s market capture and elevate Moroccanoil as the Ă¼ber argan oil company; never mind “cult-status”; Moroccanoil has legions of fans beyond celebrity-dom.  Each product is brimming with the goodness of super-hydrating wild-crafted argan oil; this natural oil is prized for its inherent properties that include anti-oxidants, Omega fatty acids and vitamin E.  Key ingredients in the Cleansing Bar include shea butter, glycerin and a natural mineral-based talc; the Bar’s aroma is exquisite and it’s consistency, creamy and luxurious.  Key ingredients in the Body Buff include orange peel (for exfoliation), orange oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, safflower oil, sesame oil and grape seed oil; these oils drench the skin with hydration; the product was gentle and non-irritating, while thoroughly sloughing off dead skin cells; rinsed well without leaving any residue; left my skin feeling silky smooth.  Key ingredients in the Body SoufflĂ© include shea butter, macadamia oil, aloe and oat protein; the product was quickly absorbed and didn’t leave any residue; my skin felt revitalized and drenched with hydration; I loved the aroma of this product as well.  Key ingredients in the Intensive Hydrating Treatment include organic sunflower oil, organic chamomile water, vitamin E, glycerin and lavender oil; this product was remarkable as it alleviated some very dry patches of my skin; product was quickly absorbed without leaving any residue and its aroma was outstanding.  Key ingredients in the Hand Cream include shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and avocado butter; once again, all of these butters, plus the argan oil drenched my hands, especially the cuticles, with restorative hydration; non-greasy and quickly absorbed; and of course, the product’s aroma was also outstanding.  All of these products were wonderful; they all work synergistically to heal, treat, restore and revitalize; my skin felt so much better after using each one.  I’m looking forward to the next round of innovative and exceptional treatment products from Moroccanoil. http://www.moroccanoil.com

Miracle Skin Transformer ~ SPF20 Treat & Conceal Eye & Face is the perfect go-to for that quick-fix concealer; whether it’s dark under eye circles, blemishes or hyperpigmentation, this light-weight cream comes in different shades to complement all skin tones; formulation hydrates, protects and enhances; key ingredients include marine collagen, white rose and chamomile extracts, and color correcting minerals. http://www.miracleskintransformer.com

SereniTea Liquid Organic Green Tea ~ Decaffeinated Raspberry Presweetened is one of the many flavors of this certified Organic Green Tea conveniently in a premeasured and already brewed concentration; handy take-with packet.  Green tea is known for its healthy properties that include high levels of polyphenols, flavonoids and anti-oxidant.  The pure brewed Organic Green Tea is flavored with natural fruit extracts, but sweetened with sucralose, which I found to be too sweet, while leaving an after-taste; the Raspberry fruit extract in the flavor I tried was enjoyable; free of pesticides, wild crafted, certified organic, zero carbs and zero calories.  Varieties include sweetened or unsweetened, plain or fruit extract infused, regular or decaffeinated. http://www.liquidsereniteas.com

Silly Lips Lip Balms ~ Bangin Bekah Sugared Strawberry, Tasty Tracy Peach Coconut and Kinky Katie Vanilla Mint come in adorable tins with images of naughty-esque pin-ups artist Alberto Vargas made famous in the forties and fifties.  These cute tins with their equally cute names bely the fact that the contents of each Lip Balm are brimming with all-things-great for those summer-parched lips; key ingredients include shea butter, castor seed oil and beeswax with a delicious hint of flavors that tempt lip smacking; lips are drenched with replenishing hydration and add just the right amount of subtle color.http://sillylips.com

~ ONE LAST REVIEW TIDBIT ~

Trademark Tavern (Lombard, IL) ~ While this location may not be in your geographic area, be sure to check out similar restaurants that go beyond offering standard bar-fare eats.  Trademark Tavern recently opened in my area, and I was impressed with its overall design and layout; huge, airy, but intimate ~ a definite sport’s enthusiasts place to hang but large enough to seek intimate seating for private moments.  The main reason I checked out the place was to look over their menu and see how easy and adaptive it could be to satisfy those with dietary restrictions.  There wasn’t any problem in ordering healthy food-fare off of the menu or making a request of the server to have a selection grilled versus sautĂ©ed in a no-no, like butter; I loved the White Bean Hummus with grilled Pita, the Margarita and Vegetable flatbreads, grilled lamb lollipops with a delicious chimichurri sauce and a seasonal fresh berry tart.  A fun aspect of the restaurant included four booths; each booth had two draft beer dispensers featuring eight different varieties. All menu items are sourced locally as much as possible (fish flown in fresh daily), with an emphasis on fresh and natural.  I've learned that one can’t presume anything based on its name.  Trademark Tavern is no different, and was a great learning experience for me in this regard. http://www.trademarktavern.com

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ~ CONTINUED

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
~ AN ONGOING COMMITMENT ~

Living a healthy lifestyle requires having a balance between nutrition, fitness, physical, emotional and psychological well-being.  It isn’t one thing, but a compilation of many things ~ balanced.  In my articles, I’ve tried to regularly feature topics of achieving a healthy lifestyle, whether that included skin and body care products, therapeutic spa treatments, healthier food choices and products, greener homecare and household products, or interviews with individuals who represent key aspects of this topic.  I’ve also tried to attend trade events that feature trends and innovation in these areas.  Over the years, I’ve written a number of articles that cover all of these topics.  This article is no different, and continues this theme by focusing on healthy food choices.

I recently attended the 93rd National Restaurant Association Show  (May 5-8, 2012; McCormick Place, Chicago).  There were over nineteen hundred exhibitors showcasing the latest trends and innovation in food, foodservice, equipment, technology, environmental, safety, nutrition, education and business.  It featured some of the brightest and best in this industry's manufacturing, farming, packaging and production segments.  Over sixty-one thousand attendees from all fifty states and over one hundred countries attended this year’s trade-only show.  Biggest trends within the industry this year include healthier alternatives, gluten-free items and food trucks

While I wasn’t able to take in the entire show due to its enormity, I managed to peruse the organic and natural food sections, which would prove somewhat difficult, since the aisles were always crammed with attendees; it was tough getting to the front of the fray to chat with any of the exhibitors to learn a bit more about their products.  I was keen on connecting with a few of the exhibitors and was fortunate enough to have scheduled interviews prior to my arrival; my interviews were with Linda Appel Lipsius, CEO and Co-Founder, Teatulia Tea, and also Chef Big Shake, Shawn Davis, creator of the Original Shrimpburger.  I enjoyed speaking with both of them and definitely gained a better appreciation for their passion and commitment to offering healthy and delicious items.

Chef Big Shake ~ At the age of twelve, Shawn Davis was becoming a young man on the tough streets of Long Island, New York.  His devoted mother knew that once school was out for the year, spending summers on those streets wouldn’t be “healthy” for him, nor help mold him into becoming a productive man.  So, she gave him some tough love and opted to send him to Fire Island to spend his summer, participating in a special program for youth; she knew he’d enjoy the program, because it involved something he always enjoyed doing at home, and that was cooking alongside his grandmother and mother.  The summer program involved studying and being mentored by chef and restaurateur, Giovanni Palmero, who had a very successful fine-dining Italian restaurant on Ocean Beach, Fire Island, “CJ Palmero’s”.  For seven summers, Chef Palmero would teach Shawn everything about the business, from the bottom up; no task was too menial or too great for him to experience and master, including cooking.  Within three years and at the age of only fifteen, he would rise to become the restaurant’s head chef.  Through the devoted mentorship of Chef Palmero, Shawn learned to love the creativity and business of cooking and restaurants and was inspired to pursue a career in cooking.  He would go on to work at numerous hotels and become a personal chef for many of Hollywood’s celebrities.

In time, he’d marry and have a daughter that would eventually inspire him further with his passion for food.  At the age of ten, his daughter decided to become a vegetarian, and eliminate all meat and poultry from her diet, except fish.  Being a wise and loving father, he supported her fully, but also applied his knowledge of food; he wanted to make sure that whatever she ate, it would be healthy and not another fad diet or short-lived trend.  This would catapult him into developing food recipes of just fish and seafood, and were nutritionally balanced, high in protein, low in fat and calories, delicious tasting and fast and easy to prepare.

In 2007, Shawn formed his own company, which would eventually become a multi-million dollar business, and continues to grow.  His main creation is The Original Shrimp Burger, a premier gourmet all-vegetarian burger was the perfect item to begin his mega company.  Before his company CBS Foods, Inc. was getting started once he realized his original recipe was a winner, he was a realist and recognized that in order to grow a business successfully, an entrepreneur also needed more capital investment to help grow that business; in time, he’d make an appearance on the popular ABC television program “Shark Tank” to pitch his products and ask for investors; unfortunately, there weren’t any takers.  Not easily disappointed, he knew he was on to a great product and wasn’t going to be discouraged by a few millionaires who turned him down in front of millions of viewers.  Shortly after his appearance, he began getting numerous offers from other interest investors and companies that wanted in on his product.  And like they say, the rest is history.

CBS Foods, Inc. is now a multi-million venture and growing.  The full product range is available online, at Costco and other select retailers, and is also a featured product on QVC; the entire line is also available for foodservice.  The full product range includes the The Original Shrimp Burger, Jalapeño Shrimp Burger, Cajun Shrimp Burger, Teriyaki Shrimp Burger, Chesapeake Bay Burger, Lobster Sliders, Lobster Pot Pies and Lobster Mac and Cheese.  I had the pleasure of trying the Original Shrimp Burger, Jalapeño Shrimp Burger and Teriyaki Shrimp Burger.  I loved how they quickly cooked and could be eaten with or without a bun; I also found the simpler the toppings the better, which allow the delicious sweet taste of the Louisiana Gulf shrimp to shine.

It was a real delight spending time with Chef Big Shake, Shawn Davis and hearing about his story and his love and passion for his family, his products, his company everything he does.  Most of all, he absolutely loves how his products have been received and how much enjoyment people have derived each and every mouthful.  I hope our paths cross again; meeting him was like seeing a friend you hadn’t seen in many years.  And, I love his burgers ~ they certainly don’t make me miss the meat! http://www.chefbigshake.com

Lifeway Frozen Kefir  ~ Kefir, a cultured and fermented milk drink has been around for centuries and has its origins in Turkey.  I’ve always enjoyed the taste of Kefir and consider it a drinkable yogurt; it’s a bit on the tart side, but always refreshing.  Lifeway Kefir is made from grass-fed cows milk that’s also free of bovine growth hormones (rBGH) and antibiotics.  Each fluid cup is packed with live and active cultures, or good probiotic bacteria, our digestive tract needs for optimal digestive and intestinal health and is naturally high in protein and calcium.  Lifeway recently announced the addition of Frozen Kefir products.  I had the pleasure of trying Frozen ProBugs, the kid-friendly version of this “health” drink in a kid-sized squeezable container.  Flavors like Goo-Berry Pie, Strawnana Split and Orange Creamy Crawler not only had cute names, but the packaging would put a smile on any kid’s face, regardless of their age. The Goo-Berry Pie was “berry-licious”, and the Strawnana Split didn’t even matter it hadn’t any chocolate sauce, whipped cream, nuts or cherry on top, and the Orange Creamy Crawler reminded me of a creamy orange “dreamsicle”; each flavor was delicious.  The other product I tried was the Tart and Tangy Chocolate, Tart and Tangy Dulce de Leche and Tart and Tangy Pumpkin.  Packaged in a pint container, each flavor was definitely tart and tangy, but also very refreshing.  The flavors were all rich, creamy and delicious; the Chocolate was subtle and tasted like mocha (would love to see a dark chocolate version); the Dulce de Leche reminded me of a vanilla sundae, minus the caramel sauce and nuts; the Pumpkin reminded me of Thanksgiving, and I didn’t even miss the pie crust or whipped topping.  Both of these new lines are a definite hit and with the spat of heat waves hitting most of our regions, each is a vacation for the mouth.  Be sure to check out their website and read their Corporate Social Responsibility, which includes aspects of sustainability and going green, giving back to the community, and other key missions. http://www.lifeway.net

Teatulia Tea ~ I think this is one of the best-certified organic tea varieties I’ve ever tasted.  Teatulia Tea is the only Bangladeshi tea farm to have ever been certified as organic by the USDA.  No matter which variety I tried (white, green, black or tisane), each brew always tasted clean and refreshing; the purity of the brew held up whether it was steeped and consumed hot, or steeped and allowed to chill and then consumed; each flavor remained true and never diminished; those varieties that were infused with other ingredients were subtle and never over-powering. The tea varieties I tried included White, Green, Black, Benghal Breakfast, Earl of Benghal, Neem Nectar, Tulsi Infusion, Peppermint, Ginger and Lemongrass.  I also enjoy the videos on their website; each is informative, inspiring and touching, but especially the video under their About Us drop down, http://www.teatulia.com/about-us.htm.  This clip tells the remarkable and uplifting story about the Teatulia Tea Garden, its philosophy, its people and their purpose.  Teatulia Tea lives its mission of social responsibility by caring for the land and its people, who are the caretakers of these wonderful teas.  Speaking with Linda Appel Lipsius at the show was enjoyable.  Her passion and commitment to the brand and its caretakers was evident throughout our conversation; she emphasized the unique aspect of their Single Garden tea farm and how it is overseen and maintained by a community that is committed to growing, nurturing and cultivating the teas; she is also proud of the fact that only sustainable growing procedures are adhered to, including using rainwater irrigation; at the same time, the tea farm’s caretakers are also benefiting from this tea, as their livelihoods are derived from it.  The entire cycle of growing, harvesting and even its packaging is organic and made of recycled materials.   My culinary tips suggestions on how to enjoy these varieties even more include combining some of them, like Ginger with Lemongrass, or Ginger with Earl of Benghal; or, try using Ginger or Lemongrass for poaching fish to subtly infuse and perfume the fish with these pure culinary flavors; you can even be creative by making a refreshing frozen granita using the Ginger, Lemongrass or Peppermint varieties individually, or combined with each other, or altogether. http://www.teatulia.com

~ My Perspective ~

There are many cynics who challenge the food and restaurant industry for its lack of commitment and interest in social issues that include food safety, food health, nutrition, food education, sustainability and community.  Unfortunately, many of these individuals are making ill-founded conclusions based on clique-based misinformation and negative media-hype.  For those naysayers, please take some time and check out this industry’s website, and familiarize yourself with their stated commitments on Food & Healthy Living and Sustainability & Social Responsibility and the many programs they offer to its members that strengthen their commitment to these areas of concern.  The Restaurant Industry is deeply committed to all of these important social issues, which impacts us all. http://www.restaurant.org

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.
