HOLIDAY GIFTING GUIDE

This is the special time of the year when hope, joy, generosity and optimism converge with warm thoughts and fond recollections of memories from years gone by.  In this spirit of the season, I’ve assembled some of my favorite things to consider as gifts.  I hope you enjoy this year’s assortment of gifting ideas, whether they’re for a loved one or for yourself.

~ MY FAVORITE GIFTING IDEAS ~

Clarisonic ~ Clarisonic has been on the forefront of technologically advanced skincare products that are as effective in the hands of a skilled spa or salon practitioner, or when used by the consumer.  Clarisonic has clearly revolutionized skincare technology with simple and cost-effective products that continue to receive praise from both sectors.  I tried Clarisonic’s latest and greatest products, which included their PLUS Face & Body Sonic Cleansing System, the Deep Pore Detoxifying Solution and the PEDI Sonic Foot Transformation.  The PLUS is an expanded Classic unit with three variable speeds of sonic cleansing, adjustable timer, plus a body mode and brush head with an optional body extender wand.  Users can now thoroughly tend to face and body with proven effectiveness using variable cleansing speeds and brush head options (sensitive, normal or body); the unit comes with a recharger cradle, a two-year warranty and is also waterproof.  The Deep Pore unit is a Mia 2 with timer and two adjustable speeds; it also includes a specially designed Deep Pore brush head that removes any pore clogging gunk gently and effectively; designed to be used with the unit is a specially formulated Daily Cleanser that is formulated with fruit acids and Japanese Green Tea; a corresponding Deep Pore Detoxifying Clay Mask is also included, that’s formulated with sugar and fruit extracts, aloe vera gel, and pore detoxifying clays (kaolin and bentonite); a charger and carrying case round out this complete set; waterproof and warrantied for two years.  Lastly, a recent newcomer to this phenomenal line is the PEDI Sonic Foot Transformation system.  This system is like having a perpetual nail technician at your beck and call.  The impressive system includes a revved up version of the Classic with a specialized motor that is more suited to foot care, versus the face; the base unit also has three variable speeds and adjustable timer; it’s also waterproof and comes with a charger and two year warranty.  Specific to the base unit are a special texturized stainless steel precision disk that smooths and softens dry skin on the feet (under no circumstance is this head or any other head specific to this PEDI to be used or interchanged with brush heads on any of the facial units).  Also included with the PEDI is a separate wet/dry buffing brush head that is designed with varying lengths of filaments to effectively buff and exfoliate the feet is also included; the PEDI also comes with specially formulated products that aid the prepping and finishing of the feet (Pedi-Buff, Pedi-Balm and Pedi-Boost).  My overall experience with using each of these systems is that my face, body and feet were left scrupulously cleaned and revitalized; continued usage also helped to improve the overall texture and condition of the skin due to increased circulation.  http://www.clarisonic.com/

Crabtree & Evelyn ~ This continues to be one of my favorite brands; it never disappoints.  Crabtree & Evelyn knows how to develop scents that are authentic and evoke memories of cherished moments; I also enjoy their body care products, which have healing and restorative formulas.  Each year, I look forward to their holiday collections; this year, I tried their beautiful Home Fragrance Sprays in Noël and Gilded Chestnut; both were part of their signature Home for the Holidays offerings.  Noël diffuses essences of balsam and persimmon, with hints of mulling spices; Gilded Chestnut diffuses essences of pear and spice, with hints of crisp berry; both aromas evoke cherished holiday memories and subtly scent without leaving any strong aromas.  I also tried their new Verbena and Lavender de Provence collection’s Cologne and Shower Gel. I adored the light and fresh authentic aromas, and found them to be uplifting and aromatherapeutic; the Cologne includes extracts of verbena, lavender, cedarwood, white amber and Tonka, making for an authentic, fresh and uplifting aroma; the Shower Gel also includes extracts of verbena and lavender and gently cleanses without drying the skin.  http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/

Manifesto of Light Gorgeous Rose Collection ~ A phenomenally intense, rich and decadent pure rose essential Perfume Oil Serum and Body Cream that is nearly impossible to describe without committing an injustice to them.  Both products contain the precious and highly coveted Rose Damascene Absolute and Rose Damascene Otto, and are artisan crafted by hand; the formulas contain no water, which assures the purity of the oils.  The Serum also contains Italian cold extracted hazelnut oil, Myrrh and Geranium.  The Body Cream also contains African wild harvested shea butter, Italian cold pressed hazelnut oil, Myrrh and Geranium.  Over the years, I’ve experienced many products that used pure essential rose oil in their formulas, but I can honestly state that with these exquisite and precious products, I’ve never experienced so pure, so nearly perfect rose formulas that touched my olfactory, transporting me to a dimension of calm and restoration.  Both of these products are dense with 100% essential oils from this cherished flower and as such, only a miniscule amount is needed to achieve sensory enjoyment; the purity of product also nurtures the skin and is an incredible super hydrator.  Unique to this exquisite collection are the signed, numbered and expiry dated certificates of authentication for both the Gorgeous Over One Hundred Bunches of Real Roses in a Bottle Double Blended Serum and the Gorgeous Over Thirty Bunches of Real Roses in a Jar Double Blended Cream.  Both come are packaged in black glass containers, which are impervious to degrading light; each comes in full-sized containers and includes a handy refillable travel container, complete with a black suede embroidered travel pouch.  Exquisite all around…from packaging, to presentation, to product!  http://www.manifestooflight.com/

Pevonia ~ Radiant skin doesn’t happen by accident.  The skincare pros at Pevonia have been doing all-things skin in spas and salons for decades.  The latest buzz is their Celebrate Radiance Micro-Retinol Repair Gift Set.  Only available through a qualified Pevonia spa or salon location, these products are absolutely amazing and while immediate results are noticeable, over time, their effect is cumulative.  The kit includes the Micro-Retinol Essential Foaming Cleanser, Micro-Retinol Essential Serum and Micro-Retinol Essential Moisturizer and comes in a sweet winter white quilted travel bag (I love the tasseled zipper, too).  Products work synergistically together with key ingredients that include hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Retinol; this formula is perfect for diminishing signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, while nourishing, repairing and smoothing skin that’s left luminous and brightened.

Superstar Nail Lacquer ~ Just in time for the holidays and all of those social events on your calendar, the Superstar Nail Lacquer collection is perfect for that making all of your digits festive and glam.  The three spectacular colors I played with included Michelle Is Ready For The White House, a brash dark glimmery red; Bright Lights, Long Nights, a pearlescent wintery white; and, Purple Party, an rich iridescent purple with night sky undertones.  The nail lacquer collection is formaldehyde-free and vegan-friendly and longwearing; I tend to prefer just having my toes painted, since on my hands, I tend to clumsily ruin color in seconds.  http://www.superstarnaillacquer.com

VENeffect ~ With the harshness of winter setting in, what better way to nourish and restore your fragile skin than with this dynamic new treatment line that’s garnering a lot of hot press and praise.  I tried the VENeffect Anti-Aging Intensive Moisturizer, Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF15, Firming Phyto-Lift Serum, Anti-Aging Eye Treatment and Anti-Aging Lip Treatment.  These products are ideal for aging skin that needs to restore depleted levels of collagen with natural phytoestrogens; the unique formulations protect skin from sun’s harmful rays, while delivering anti-oxidants that diminish signs of aging; products are also hypo-allergenic.  I noticed a slight visible improvement after only one use of these products, especially under my eyes and cheek areas, which are two dry-prone areas of my skin.  http://www.veneffect.com/

Votre Nu ~ The holidays remind us of beautiful scents to use and remember.  The festively packaged Holiday Rollaway Gift Set is a perfect way to gift someone with the experience of beautiful French organic parfums in aromas like Les Naturelles Sacré Coeur and Les Naturelles Festival.  The rollerballs deliver just the right amount of fragrance to all the secret places where the natural body heat radiates the scents.  Sacré Coeur is a light floral of Nenuphar, the European White Water Lily.  Festival is a crisp and bright lemon. To tame the holiday chill that assault the lips and hands, there’s stocking-stuffer perfectly sized restorative formulas, there’s Champagne Kisses Enhancing Lip Balm, which drenches the lips in nourishing and soothing grape seed oil, and the dynamic all-in-one bébé Duette Luxe Lips Moisturizing Balm and Almond Luxe Hand Cream; the Lip Balm drenches parched lips with coconut oil and shea butter and protects with UV filters, while the Hand Cream nourishes and heals with sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil, aloe, and UVA/UVB filters.  http://www.votrevu.com/corporate/productcatalog

~ NEVERENDING GIFTING IDEAS ~

If you’re stumped for gifting ideas, think local and consider gift certificates to restaurants, day spas, salons, hotels, museum memberships, fitness club memberships and related.  Other great gift ideas include putting together your own themed gift baskets for the wellness-focused foodie, or the DIY-er, etc., or IOU coupons (babysitting, dog sitting, a meal or two when someone is ill, etc.).  Be creative and consider all of the possibilities.

~ FINALE ~

The holidays, especially Christmas, are magical and remind us of the innocence of the child within where anything and everything is possible as long as you believe.  Keep this in mind as you celebrate the spirit of the season.  And, when gifting, remember that it’s the thought that counts and not the gift logo or its value; don’t go into debt being gift-generous; sometimes, the simplest of gifts are the best and most cherished.  Celebrate this season with hope, joy, gratitude, generosity and optimism.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

FACE FAVES

(Clara Bow, The "It" Girl)

Fall is in full swing.  Outdoor temps are chillier and indoor humidity levels have diminished.  For me, I’ve noticed that with the combination of these two aspects, my skin has become drier and more pale.  In my recent article “Redux: Fall Transitioning Tips”, I covered numerous aspects related to seasonal change, including the need for reassessing and changing one’s regular skincare and color regimen so both conform to the “issues” of the new season.  With that in mind, this article focuses on products that address seasonal change concerns and fit nicely into one’s adjusted routines.  This article also features reviews of products that are ideal for seasonal transitioning.  I’ve included some of my “Face Faves” from Caudalie, Darphin, Fiafini and Jane Iredale.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir ~ This spray toner is ideal after the cleansing routine, or used throughout the day for a quick pick-me-up.  The predominant rosemary aroma is calming and soothing; product is non-irritating and hydrating.  This is also a great take-with product that I’ve been using for many years.  http://us.caudalie.com/

Darphin Azahar Cleansing Micellar Water ~ This is an all-in-one, no-rinse, soothing cleanser for face, eyes and lips.  It’s particularly appropriate for sensitive eyes and skin that’s prone to redness, rosacea and irritation. I loved how it gently removed my make-up and other impurities without irritating my sensitive skin; my skin was softened, hydrated and refreshed. With neroli essential oil and natural bisabolol.  This product can also be used as a refresher throughout the day.  http://www.darphin.com/

Fiafini 100% Marula Beauty Oil ~ Marula is a nut oil with numerous natural properties that are ideal for the face; they include cleansing, rehydrating, protecting, improving cellular production and circulation.  The Beauty Oil has natural antioxidant properties that help to diminish early signs of aging, including softening fine lines and wrinkles; it’s also soothing and anti-microbial.  A tiny amount of the Beauty Oil will deliver outstanding hydration throughout the day, without leaving skin feeling greasy or tacky; quickly absorbed and ideal for all skin types; can also be used on body, hair and nails.  http://fiafini.com/

Jane Iredale Fall Collection ~ The Live In Full Bloom Puremoist Lipstick (Hannah) is a rich warm color that’s reminiscent of autumn’s burnished leaves; the color glides on easily while drenching lips with protection and nourishment.  The Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener is an ideal prep for the face that evens and smooths texture, while minimizing the appearance of large pores; it also adds a subtle bit of luminosity; can be used alone, or without any additional makeup, which is what I prefer during the day.  The 24-Karat Gold Dust (Champagne) is a perfect all-over face glimmer, or highlighter for cheekbones and under brow area; the subtle glimmer adds wonderful luminosity to the face.  The Mascara (Espresso) is definitely a glam mascara that glides on easily with a rich color, while lengthening and intensifying the finest of lashes thanks to the fab brush.  Loved how it separated and defined each lash without clumping, smudging or flaking.  https://janeiredale.com/

~ END GAME ~

All of these products provide the perfect seasonal change, coverage, color, conditioning and treatment for the face.  These products will effortlessly carry you through the seasons beyond Fall.  Enjoy!

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

AT-HOME SPA FINDS

Creating an at-home spa experience needn’t be an expensive investment.  There are many products and implements available online and at traditional brick and mortar retail and drug stores that offer products with price points that appeal to many economic levels.

Over the years, I’ve written and presented extensively about the importance of taking time for oneself and offered suggestions on how to achieve this, including how to create an at-home spa environment conducive to relaxation, restoration and well-being.  Part of an at-home spa experience is making sure to schedule some time for yourself each day, even if it’s just to go outside for a contemplative walk, or to take a warm shower or soak in the tub at the end of your day.  Engaging the senses is also an integral part of the spa experience, whether it’s enjoyed at a spa facility or in an at-home spa setting.

~ TENDING TO THE PARTS ~

DIY Facial ~ In his latest book, “Cooking Your Way to Gorgeous”, celebrity esthetician Scott Vincent Borba presents a compendium of healthy recipes that are nutrient dense, flavorful and ideal for healthy skin.  He also offers a number of DIY facial recipes based on food related ingredients.  Here’s one example: “Stimulating Cinnamon Facial (p. 85) ~ Prepare a paste of two parts cinnamon powder and one part honey; leave it on your skin for as long as you can.  Rinse off with warm water.  Awakens and revitalizes skin.”  http://www.scottvincentborba.com

Earth Therapeutics Japanese Dry Brush ~ Nothing stimulates circulation while exfoliating than giving yourself a “dry brushing”.  This implement is made of sisal and coconut fibers.  Always begin this process at the feet, using circular motions and working upwards, towards the heart.  Once you’ve completed the “dry brushing”, take a nice warm shower or bath.  Earth Therapeutics offers a variety of at-home spa implements.  http://www.earththerapeutics.net

Essence of Beauty Shea Indulgence Kit ~ This handy travel kit contains all that you need for an indulgent shower or bath.  The kit includes Cream Shower Cleanser, Radiant Butter Scrub and Enriched Body Lotion.  Both the Cleanser and Scrub were gentle and did a nice job of priming the skin for the Lotion.  Each product drenched the skin with the hydrating goodness of shea butter and left it feeling smooth and silky, without being greasy.  http://www.essenceofbeauty.com

Pevonia Botanica Restore Neck and Bust Concentrate and Bust Cream ~ Both of these products work synergistically to firm, tone and restore the often neglected delicate neck, bust and décolleté/chest.  Key ingredients include Kigelia Africana (anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which also tightens and firms the skin), Elastin, and Vitamin E, which when combined, all help to minimize any visible signs of aging.  I noticed the skin in these areas to have diminished fines lines, while the texture was smooth and firmer; the pores also seemed less grainy.  These two products are a must for these often-neglected areas of regular skincare regimens.  http://www.pevonia.com

Spa Sonic Skin Care System ~ This all-in-one system takes care of cleansing and refining from head to toe.  The waterproof battery operated system comes complete with a facial brush (2), facial buffer sponge, body brush and pumice stone.  The brush heads were very gentle and effectively; the facial buffer sponge made applying serums and creams easier with a better disbursement of product; the pumice stone kept calloused areas soft and polished.  I also used the body brush as a dry brusher, which helped exfoliate my skin and prep it for showering.  http://myspasonic.com/

Taut Gold Standard Collagen Mask ~ I’m a skeptic when it comes to a product’s promise to show results after using it the first time.  But, when I’m wrong, I’m wrong.  This product delivers on its promises of skin brightening, firming and hydration.  The Collagen Masks are individually packaged and include a pre-cut cloth form that fit perfectly onto my face; each Collagen Mask is pre-treated with active ingredients that include glycerin, soluble collagen, hydrolyzed collagen and Vitamin E; the formula restores hydration levels, diminishes fine lines and brightens the skin.  After a ten-minute treatment, I was amazed at the luminosity of my skin and how much smoother the texture appeared; also noticeable were the diminished lines and improved hydration level; the product was also gentle and non-irritating.  Any remaining residue from the form was applied to the face, neck, chest, hands and forearms.  These Collagen Masks are from the same creators of the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask.  http://www.renewalliance.com

~ TO SOOTHE AND SAVOR ~

Davidson’s Organic Lavender Earl Grey Tea ~ Nothing is more soothing and calming than a nice hot cup of tea to culminate a restorative and calming at-home spa regimen.  I’m partial to this brand and variety.  I love inhaling this variety’s soothing aromas, while slowly sipping and savoring the brew.  Take some time to savor your favorite tea after a hectic day and preferably without any distractions or annoyances.  http://www.davidsonstea.com/

~ THE FINALE ~

Your at-home spa experience isn’t an indulgence; it’s a time for recharging and reclaiming yourself.  Create an at-home spa environment that is conducive to relaxation and calm.  Remember, this time is an investment in your well-being.  You’ve earned it and you’re definitely worth it!

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

REDUX ~ FALL TRANSITIONING TIPS

As I write this, the weather is finally getting cooler with lower levels of humidity; both are a welcome relief.  I’m sure there will be a few last gasps of summer over the next few weeks, but for now, I’ll revel in this seasonal break from summer.

When a season transitions into the next, such as summer to fall, we need to be mindful of the need to change and adapt virtually every aspect of our daily lives; what worked during one season generally doesn’t work in the next one; routines and regimens need to be altered.

The following transitional tips from summer into fall should help you to at least consider some of the aspects of your day-to-day regimens that might require some tweaking.

~ TIPS FOR SKIN, HAIR AND MAKEUP ~

Climatological changes, including cooler and drier temps both indoor and outdoor, consider changing your skincare regimen to ramp up product efficacy.  What worked well in the warmer and more humid months will probably be inappropriate in the cooler and drier months.

Lighter weight lotions should give way to creams and butters.

Colder, drier air will dehydrate the skin.  Skin still requires periodic exfoliation with some type of moisturizing soaps or cleansers.  Skin needs to be moisturized and rehydrated to replenish depleted moisture levels and also to maintain a healthy mantel of skin.  Using serums is a great way to treat and hydrate the skin.

Don’t over-exfoliate the skin; when skin is dry and aggressive exfoliation is done, it can harm the delicate tissue and irritate it.  Make sure to use serums and don’t discount the wonders of face oils (e.g. olive, almond, coconut, palm, jojoba, argan, marula, shea, cocoa, etc.).

Continue using an SPF product to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Adjust your hair care regimen and the products used.  Since the air is dryer and less humid, it’s important to nurture your hair with the proper shampoos, conditioners and restorative masks to avoid damaging and drying out the scalp, hair follicle and hair shaft.

Lighten up your color palette, whether that’s in your makeup colors, or the colors of your wardrobe pieces.

Pale and light may have been great for the summer months to deflect the harsh rays of summer sun, however, an earthy color palette of burnished and vibrantly intense colors of fall, are more suitable.

A fashion trend this year red lipstick, which adds a vibrant pop of color to the face.  Every skin tone looks good wearing red lipstick, but make sure it’s in the correct family of red to complement your skin tone ~ blue-red or orange-red, with varying hues in each family.

Lighter weight cotton, linen or gauzy material should be replaced with warmer wool, silk blends and heavier cotton and linen fabrics to keep the body heat in as an insulator from the cold.  Vibrant colors for fabrics to suit the season are always a fashion-must.

~ TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING AND LIFESTYLE ~

Summer dining generally equates to lighter food fare, like salads, seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbal iced teas, iced fruit infused waters, etc.  These were ideal for summer, because they were less taxing on the digestive system, and also kept a person cool.

The colder months of fall and winter call for heartier foods like hot cereals, stews, soups, casseroles and the like; all are ideal for those colder months.  These foods are nutritious, but also warming.  Consider adding more dried fruits and nuts to your diet and try making your own granola.

Consider frozen fruits and vegetables, which are quick frozen right after harvesting, preserving more of the nutrient value; they’re a nice reminder of the fresher seasonal produce during the warmer summer months.

Seasonal constants are also synonymous with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  This includes sufficient amounts of water for hydration, sufficient sleep for rest and recuperation, physical exercise for strength and agility, and proper nutrition to stave off illness.

~ TIPS FOR WELL BEING ~

Consider gathering up dried twigs, branches, leaves, etc. and try your hand at creating an arrangement for a seasonal tablescape, or your gatherings in a large basket and display by your entry.

If the colder weather and shorter days are giving you cabin fever, be sure to keep the spring and summer indoor with live plants and flowers.

Take walks to shake the “blues” away and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you; there is beauty in the changing of all-things nature.

Don’t forget to open your windows every so often just to let some fresh air inside.

~ TIPS FOR SEASONAL TRANSITIONING ~

Consider making lists of warm weather tasks and cold weather tasks.  These can include goals in skincare and body care regimens, meal planning, wardrobe, fitness routines, etc.  Then review each list and streamline or adjust for your next seasonal transitioning.

~ END GAME ~

Every season brings a fresh start and new beginning.  It’s up to each individual to seek what works best for them and what will enhance and enrich their daily lives.  The circle of life is also the circle of seasons.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.

SENSORY EXPERIENCES

Engaging the senses has always been key to the spa experience.   This engagement can mean the difference between remaining stressed-out or achieving relaxation and restoration.  Going to a spa isn’t hedonism or an indulgence, but rather an investment in self.  Unfortunately, far too many spas have overly emphasized the hedonistic aspects of the experience, rather than the healing or restorative qualities of the experience.

Historically, relaxation, and restoration were the driving forces behind traditional health spas and why individuals sought them out.  The often-haphazard temporary fix so many consumers have sought in going to a spa to “cure” whatever was ailing them today, undermines and diminishes the real purpose for going to one.  If one rushes into a spa all stressed-out and then gets a therapeutic body massage, for example, and leaves expecting to have all of their stress dissipated by that single treatment without fully understanding why they were stressed out and how to eliminate it, then they’re missing the purpose of the spa experience.  Many spas are also missing an opportunity of informing and educating their clients on how to continue any benefits of relaxation or restoration they experienced from the treatment once they leave the confines of the spa, and returning back to reality.

Whether we realize it or not, everything we do each day is impacting our senses.  Sometimes the impact is pleasant, while other times not so pleasant.  Those real life sensory experiences have a dramatic impact on our memory, since the experiences are imprinted, which explains why some people prefer certain colors, or aromas, or types of music, etc. to that of others.  Keeping that in mind, the following products also impact the senses, and in differing ways.  These products are restorative for the face and body, while also being aromatherapeutic, which does brings about a sense of calming and relaxation.

Colorlab Custom Lipstick, Sinnissippi Rose ~ This special color of Sinnissippi Rose was customized for a Rockford Park District (IL) Wine and Roses Gala in 2012; held at the Sinnissippi Rose Gardens, one of Rockford’s Great Gardens, the gala was a benefit for the Rockford Park District's City of Gardens and the Sinnissippi Rose Garden Endowment.  The Sinnissippi Rose Garden boasts of two thousand rose plants from sixty-two varieties.  The custom Lipstick was named after this garden to represent one of its many rich hued roses.  Colorlab lipstick formulations are rich in Vitamin E, oils of jojoba, macadamia nut and grape seed, green tea extract, shea butter, and aloe; the hydrating formula drenches the lips with natural ingredients that protect and nourish.  Photo by Lyndi Toohill.  http://colorlabcosmetics.com/   http://www.rockfordparkdistrict.org/index.php/facilities/parks/city-of-gardens

Eight Skincare Lavender Body Softening Oil ~ This Lavender Body Softening Oil comes in a handy spray bottle that’s ideal for travel or workout.  Before showering, I prepped my skin with a thorough dry brushing, which helps get the circulation going, but also helps slough off any dead skin cells.  After showering and then spraying the Softening Oil all over, my skin felt incredibly hydrated.  The product was quickly absorbed without being greasy or tacky.  My skin felt silky and hydrated throughout the day.  Key ingredients include oils from safflower seed, lavender, jojoba seed, apricot kernel, sunflower seed, sweet almond, avocado, rice bran, wheat germ, gardenia flower extract, and evening primrose.  The product was also very aromatherapeutic.  http://www.eightskincare.com/

Jurlique Rose Shower Gel, Rose Hand Cream, Rose Body Cream, Rose Moisturising Cleanser, and Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense-Deluxe Edition ~ I love the aroma of rose and these products didn’t disappoint.  The Rose Shower Gel is highly concentrated and very little was required to create a rich cleansing foam that left my skin feeling hydrated with the delicate aroma of pure rose on my skin.  Both the Hand Cream and Body Cream drenched my skin with nourishing hydration that was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; both also left a subtle aroma of pure rose on my skin. The Moisturising Cleanser created a gentle and hydrating foam that deep cleans the skin without stripping it dry; it’s also rich in anti-aging antioxidants.  The Balancing Mist also hydrated the skin, while toning and refreshing the skin; it set the skin perfectly for my moisturizer; the Balancing Mist was also ideal used throughout the day to freshen the face; key ingredients include a proprietary blend of rose varieties that are equal to ten thousand rose petals per bottle, as well as marshmallow, aloe vera, glycerin, and grapefruit seed.  The rich dense aroma of pure rose makes all of these products highly aromatherapeutic.  Jurlique has been providing natural skincare for over twenty-five years, using organic and natural ingredients grown and harvested from their own farms and used in their product formulations.  http://www.jurlique.com/discover-jurlique/about/

MIYU Teas & Beauty A Prettea Little Quartet ~ The pairing of coordinated skincare with tea is a unique lifestyle approach that’s also forward thinking and has healing attributes based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which involves the sense of beauty originating both inside and out.  MIYU’s approach is to combine a serum with a tea to achieve that balance and involves a Hydrate and a De-Stress component; the first is for the morning and the second, the evening.  The Hydrate Mi component is a two-step approach involving a restorative and nurturing spray serum paired with an energizing tea.  The Hydrate Mi Spray Serum is rich in antioxidant botanicals that include wild pansy, rose, goji berries and mangosteen.  The Hydrate Mi Tea is a blend of green rooibos, goji berries, and rose petals.  Pansy improves circulation and improves hydration; rose is soothing and softening and also aids in circulation; mangosteen is rich in antioxidants; green rooibos is rich in flavonoids, which tackle free radials; and, goji is also rich in antioxidants and collagen-enhancing Vitamin C, which also aids in maintaining the softness of skin.  The De-Stress Mi component pairs a recovery and restorative spray serum with a calming tea.  The De-Stress Mi Spray Serum includes five essential minerals (silicon, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc) that protect the skin’s barrier and decreases stress, irritation and inflammation; it also includes dandelion, which also functions to decrease stress and inflammation; it also contains ginger, a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory; another soothing ingredient is licorice, which contributes to skin brightening; and, honeysuckle sooths and protects the skin from negative environmental affects.  The De-Stress Tea contains peppermint, rich in Vitamins A and C, which is both refreshing and calming; it also contains licorice root, another calming and anti-inflammatory ingredient, and chamomile, which further soothes, calms and heals.  Each Serum Spray and its corresponding Tea were refreshing.  http://www.miyubeauty.com/

Molton Brown Kumudu Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner ~ I loved using these products.  My short, fine, oily hair was left in the best condition I’d seen or felt in years.  The key ingredients in both products include Brazilian Kumudu Fruit extract for conditioning and enhancing body volumizing; amino acids help to improve the luster and shine, and extracts of magnolia, grapefruit and cedar make for an intense aromatherapeutic quality, which was delightful.  http://www.moltonbrown.com/store/index.jsp

Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Anti-Radical Age Defense Moisture Complex and Cream Extreme Intensive Repair ~ I’m not a fan of “cosmeceuticals” because many are too harsh for my finicky skin.  That being said, I was pleasantly surprised at the gentleness and effectiveness of the Anti-Radical Defense Moisture Complex.  Geared for normal to dry skin, key anti-aging ingredients include vegetable squalane, hydrolyzed wheat and soy protein, Vitamin E, Ubiquinone 50, watermelon fruit extract, and linoleic acid.  The Moisture Complex had a rich consistency that when on smoothly and was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue; my skin maintained its hydration levels throughout the day.  The product was non-irritating and distributed balanced moisture; areas that were normal never became oily, and areas that were dry, became hydrated and brought to a level of hydration as the normal areas; the skin had a silky texture; the aroma was neutral.  The Cream Extreme Intensive Repair, which is recommended for dry and sensitive skin, was too rich for my skin; although my skin has dry patches and is frequently reactive, the formulation was dense and ointment-like, even after warming it in my palm before applying it; the aroma seemed medicinal.  http://www.osmotics.com/index.aspx

Philip Kingsley Pure Silver Shampoo and Conditioner ~ My once-upon-a-time dishwater blonde hair is nearly all gray and defines my age.  I enjoyed using these products, which are formulated with violet hues and optical brighteners to add luster and shine to dulling gray hair.  Both the Shampoo and Conditioner left my hair very soft and easy to manage; they also left a hint of shine.  I also loved the aroma of lavender essential oil, which is in both products.  http://www.philipkingsley.com/

Weleda Arnica Massage Oil ~ I’ve been a huge fan of this line since the 1970s.  The Arnica Massage Oil does double-duty as a massage oil and as an exceptional moisturizer, which left my skin feeling like I’d just applied a dry oil.  The product was quickly absorbed without leaving any greasy or tacky residue.  Key ingredients include sunflower seed oil, olive oil and Arnica Montana extract, rosemary and lavender.  The Arnica Montana is also very soothing for stiff and sore muscles.  This product is definitely aromatherapeutic, while also being calming, restoring and hydrating.  http://www.weleda.com/

Whish Coconut Shave Crave Cream and Deodorant Swipes ~ The Shave Crave Shave Cream is ideal for women’s shaving needs.  The formulation includes key ingredients like natural squalene, an Omega-3 fatty acid and organic shea butter; soothing organic green tea and organic coconut oil; and, nourishing and restorative organic joboba seed oil.  These ingredients left my skin incredibly smooth and also hydrated and helped the razor glide without tugging or nicking.  Whish suggests a “double shave” to optimize closeness and ingredient benefit ~ once “with” the hair growth, then a second application of product, and then “against” the growth.  While I enjoyed the product and how my legs and underarms felt after using it, I’m not a fan of Coconut.  Whish Shave Crave Cream comes in a variety of aroma profiles; I would’ve loved trying Lemongrass, Lavender or Almond; maybe next time.  The Deodorant Swipes are a dual-purpose product; first, they inhibit hair growth when used regularly after shaving and second, they’re supposed to eliminate odor.  While my experience was that the Swipes were gentle and didn’t irritate the delicate underarm skin, the odor wasn’t tamed at all.  The Deodorant Swipes key ingredients include chaparral extract to inhibit growth, seaweed extract and organic sea buckthorn fruit extract to protect and firm, and odor inhibiting ingredients like odenone and saccharomyces ferment.  http://www.whishbody.com/index.php

~ Esthetics Under the Surface ~

I’m not one to want to get an injectable in my face to make myself appear younger or deal with the natural on-set of aging, code for sagging and wrinkles; and I certainly don’t begrudge others for wanting to go that route.  Dermal fillers, or injectables, have improved over the years through extensive research, development and technology.  Many of these fillers include Collagen, Botox, Restylane, Juvederm, Captique, etc.  However, before pursuing this journey, a person needs to perform extensive due diligence as to what products are currently being offered for cosmetic esthetics, making sure they’re all FDA approved, and which products are safest, including case studies, before and after imagery, duration of effectiveness, pain or side effects, and recovery time; and, above all, the individual must do sufficient research as to the qualifications and experience level of the plastic surgeon or dermatologist who will be administering the injectable. Take a tour of their facility, ask plenty of questions, ask for multiple referrals, etc.  Also, make sure to have a conference with your doctor fully exploring any contraindications you might encounter during and after the procedure.

Normal hormonal changes as the body ages is also part of appearing old; this includes the body losing its ability to naturally produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are the basis of healthy and firm skin; a normal decrease in estrogen and testosterone also contribute to the aging process.  As these normal processes change, the skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity and suppleness, and also contributes to facial wrinkles.

Injectables are an option that puts back what normal aging has taken away.  Those seeking cosmetic options like this generally do so to diminish their visible signs of aging.  And although aging is a natural part of life, its effects are further impacted by lifestyle, including stress, diet, smoking, alcohol, sleep deprivation, etc., assessing these factors and making appropriate changes should also be part of the course of action, in addition to seeking any cosmetic procedure.  To reiterate, arm yourself with as much information as possible before you go through with any invasive procedure, including injectables.  Following are a few options to consider that represent the latest in FDA approved injectables for cosmetic procedures, which are part of Merz Aesthetics.

Radiesse Volumizing Filler ~ Radiesse Volumizing Filler has been clinically tested to be the only wrinkle filler that immediately replenishes lost volume, while stimulating the production of the patient’s own natural collagen for long-lasting results; it has also been clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients.  Patients treated with this product were significantly more satisfied than patients treated with other leading wrinkle fillers based on the efficacy and longevity of the injection.  http://www.radiesse.com/

Belotero Balance Dermal Filler ~ Belotero Balance Dermal Filler is designed to integrate into a patient’s skin and mold it to their distinct facial contours, which softens lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth for a smooth and natural appearance.  The product’s versatility cam handle deep treatment areas like the nasolabial folds as well as more delicates areas such as vertical lines above the lip.  Clinical trials supported the effects to last up to six months or more.  http://www.belotero.com/

Xeomin ~ Xeomin is used in facial aesthetics to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar frown lines between the eyes (glabellar lines) in adults.  It also contains botulinum toxin type A.  It acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent the muscle fibers from contracting; by reducing these contractions, frown lines on the forehead and between the eyes are temporarily reduced.  Clinical trials supported the effects to last up to three months or more.

Lastly, remember to take some time for yourself and create a sensory experience that will enable you to de-stress, relax and restore.  You’re definitely worth it.

That’s it for this edition.  Until the next one, remember to take care of yourself and those you love.
